A North Carolina state trooper shot dead a deaf and mute man who was apparently trying to communicate using sign language after he was pulled over for a speeding violation.
Daniel Kevin Harris, 29, a father to a four-year-old boy, was killed just feet from his home in Charlotte by trooper Jermaine Saunders on Thursday evening.
Police say Saunders tried to pull Harris over for a speeding violation on Interstate 485 at around 6.15pm, but the driver led authorities on a brief pursuit before stopping.
Officials said that's when the driver got out of his car and an encounter took place between the driver and the trooper, causing a shot to be fired. Harris died at the scene.
But witnesses said Harris who was unarmed was shot almost immediately after he exited his vehicle, WCNC reports.

Or, after some old man turned left in front of me causing me to crash into him, cop comes to the hospital and writes me up for driving in N.C. with a Calif. license. They did nothing to the old man that left the scene and had to be stopped by a bystander.
Had one that liked to follow me home from the late shift at G.E. and sit right on my bumper.
N.C. Troopers ate excrement at that time, sounds like things have not changed much.
O.M.G.
How tragic. Prayers for all affected.
“Lower your window. Keep your hands on the wheel or the dash.”
Yep.
Though back before power windows a guy had to be in top shape...
Mandatory ASL classes for the department then?
Exactly. Neither is motioning with empty hands grounds to shoot someone dead.
I didn’t know that one who is legally deaf was permitted to drive. He shouldn’t be.
Being an NC native, I have to ask, are you sure you’re referring to State Troopers and not city or county? I’ve had no problems whatsoever with the troopers, they’ve long been known for restraint and professionalism. City and county can be another matter entirely. I’ve had problems with them in the past, depending upon location. There are a few places that are known for borderline harassment. Riding your bumper, sometimes with high beams on, was a favorite way to cause you to cross the center line, weave or something else giving them cause to pull you over.
I believe there was a time when deaf people were denied driver’s licenses due to their inability to hear. then I believe the do-gooders (like the ACLU and other boot lickers) got in the middle of it. now you can drive down any street USA as a deaf driver and you might see a traffic sign that says CAUTION- deaf child zone.
they’ve all gone crazy....crazy as hell.
The truth is, a cop will rough up and/or kill, usually with some justification, if not in this case, a white citizen just as likely as a black one if the circumstances are comparable.
Have to say, i got severely burned for a speeding ticket some years back in NC. The trooper was professional - and I was totally guilty. Paid the fine over the internet the following day. Bought an Escort (radar detector) after paying my fine.Expensive lesson.
#DeafLivesMatter
I needs to loot me some new work shoes and lawn tools.
BURN DOWN BIG R !!!!
See my #50. The NC State Troopers are very professional. And they will bust your butt very professioinally.
:-)
Methinks it might be a good idea to either have a “Deaf Driver” sign on their cars or some notation attached to the Driver’s License, License Plate or VIN.
It doesn’t excuse the driver if he was acting a fool, but it should reduce misinterpretations on the part of the cops.
Should have hired an attorney in the jurisdiction where the ticket occurred to represent you in court, get the ticket reduced to a nonmoving violation. That’s not cheap either, but it’s cheaper long term than allowing the points to hit your insurance.
Good advice ....but it never hit my insurance (VA), maybe because I paid up early? The trooper was a really nice young guy, maybe he put in a good word, I don’t know. I ain’t askin’ either. Repeat - it was a good lesson.
Sad story, speeding should not be a capital offense.
Since cops rely 100% on computer databases, there is no excuse for the trooper not knowing he was dealing with a deaf driver. A mistake he will have many years in prison to contemplate.
The dumbest, worst speeding ticket I ever received was given to me by an NC State Trooper. I still remember his name, could read it in the dark from the streetlight reflecting. Suffice it to say, I had pulled out to pass on one of those interminably long, straight, flat stretches of road in the middle of nowhere on the way to the beach, was driving a fairly new car and had never wound it out. Even had a radar detector, which gave me false confidence. I was going over 100 when it just blared, it didn’t build up like usual. Instant on radar, new at the time. I stood on the brakes. Officer said he could arrest me and impound my car, but was going to let me be on my way, with a ticket for the speed at which he clocked me, 91. That was an expensive one. Kept my license, but restricted.
Stats show whites more likely to be killed than blacks, last I saw.
Yeah, the cops were swarming like angry bees in my area tonight.
