Connecticut dropped 10 slots in a yearly CNBC ranking of the nation's top states for businesses.
The state ranked 43rd this year, just behind Oklahoma. The rankings are measured by categories such as the cost of doing businesses, access to capital, business friendliness and the quality of life.
The top five ranked states are Utah, Texas, Colorado, Minnesota and North Carolina. Connecticut ranked higher than two other New England states Maine, ranked 46th, and Rhode Island, ranked 50th.
"It's disappointing, but frankly not surprising we saw this drop," said Joe Brennan, president and CEO of the Connecticut Business and Industry Association. "We continued to struggle to make economic growth and job creation a number one priority of everyone in Connecticut."
In 2013, the CBIA helped to roll out the 20x17 campaign, with the goal of move Connecticut into the top 20 in national rankings of the most business-friendly states by the year 2017, Brennan said.

Woo Hoo! We’re not last!
I left in 1971 and never looked back ...
There seems to be a pattern with states in the bottom, democrats, high taxes and public unions.
Minnesota in the Top Five? Seriously??
With double-digit state income tax rates and the Democrat-Farmer-Labor-Nutjob Party running the show? Hard to believe.
” Connecticut ranked higher than two other New England states Maine, ranked 46th, and Rhode Island, ranked 50th.”
CT is textbook lesson in Laffer Curve econ.
Last year CT raised corporate taxes and MA lowered corporate taxes.
GE left CT last year for MA.
CT now has higher tax rates and less revenue, MA has lower tax rates and more revenue.
RI is mostly impoverished.
Stupid democrats run the state.
As a CPA in CT working with small businesses, I say this ranking is bogus. We are at least 57th.
And Connecticut did not even have an income tax until 1992!
*CT ping*
I do not believe that about Minnesota either. Books must be cooked.
Connecticut even worse than Massachusetts for business. Nice place to live if you can afford it. I'm surrounded by FOR SALE signs.
Mallow will rise rapidly through the ranks.
California and Connecticut are two great examples of what happens when a formerly Republican state goes full Democrat. So is Venezuela, for that matter.
Cal has to be 57th
Hey Sam, same is true down toward the Wilton area as well. Thing is, they never seem to swap to SOLD signs. Just more and more inventory... and now our town is doing real estate assessments (it’s been about 10 years) so I sure my taxes will be going up next July. They are going to price me right out of my own home! And after they do that, I won’t be able to sell it because it’s cute little starter type ranch and newcomers will have the same issue I’ll be trying to shed!
Where does New Jersey rank? We are usually at the bottom since our taxes are so high and our politicians are so corrupt
“And Connecticut did not even have an income tax until 1992!”
Did not know that!
I do know that CT is in big trouble, right now.
People and business are leaving in droves.
This happened to RI a few decades back and now RI resembles a northern Appalachia.
