Second Congressional District in Virginia. Tidewater area for the Virginia challenged.
135 of 180 precincts reporting: Pat Cardwell 2213 votes 6.83% J. Randy Forbes 13165 40.61% Scott W. Taylor 17,039 52.56%
Scott Taylor is in the House of Delegates, former SEAL and all around good troop. This is a relatively safe gop district, so he'll likely win the general.
Randy Forbes is a carpetbagger from western tidewater, 4th district. He doesn't live in the 2nd. His 4th district was redrawn and is now leaning rat. The incumbent in the 2nd decided to retire to let Forbes run for the seat. It didn't work and we just got something of a two-fer: two gop establishment tools gone.
Tory pearl clutcher is a brilliant run of words, but not everyone is automatically bad as you suggest with your Forbes libel. Fortunately, I know the difference and you don't.
Obama got 60% in the new 4th district. I doubt very much that Forbes would have stood a chance there, and even though the GOP has a decent candidate in his place, Mike Wade, the Sheriff of Henrico County, I doubt he has much of a chance either, his campaign coffers are empty to boot.
Forbes would face an uphill battle in the 4th, no doubt. But he also had name recognition in the district, a strong ability to raise funds, and a fairly loyal contingent of support. This is now a black democrat district but Owebama is not running. So Forbes might have pulled it out. He didn’t have a great chance, but a fair one. Mike Wade on the other hand is a great guy... and he’s going to lose.
What you saw here was typical of the tory wing of the VA gop. Their favored candidate, Forbes, was facing an uphill battle due to redistricting. So instead of standing and fighting in a tough district, they slid him into another district. What they failed to consider was that the voters in that other district weren’t interested in a carpetbagger when they already had a candidate from within the district. And oddly enough that local candidate (Taylor) was a veteran. In one of the most heavily military districts in the country. Imagine that.
So the tory wing of the VA gop outspends Taylor by roughly 10 to 1 and still loses.
This thread has been illuminating. It’s obvious that the tory wing of the gop still holds great sway, particularly in VA.
