(CNN)One year ago the question hovering over Park City, Utah, was which presidential candidate could capture the hearts of Mitt Romney's friends.
Less than a week later, Donald Trump said he was running for president and made them his enemy. And he beat them.
Now, with Trump as the GOP nominee, those same Republican fundraisers, business titans and longtime friends of Romney are back to huddle far from Trump Tower. Attendees caution that Romney's annual summit -- The Experts and Enthusiasts, or E2, retreat -- is not an exclusive conclave for the #NeverTrump movement. Yet it is the closest thing to a safe space for conservatives who agree that Trump is not a Republican in the mold of their 2012 Republican nominee, who remains revered by associates.
Romney, who has criticized Trump at every turn, will brief his allies in a highly-anticipated, even if brief, set of remarks Thursday evening.
Two Republicans who have been the most uneasy with Trump's ascension: House Speaker Paul Ryan, who just endorsed Trump last week, and Nebraska Sen. Ben Sasse, who has refused to, will speak, their offices confirmed.

Have no use for Romney. I remember watching George Romney stomp off the floor at a Republican Convention, because he was a sore loser and not getting his way. Thank God he was never nominated.

They pull crap like this all the time and then wonder why a guy like Trump has such sway? Then they have the nerve to say TRUMP isn’t a republican? If I’m Trump, I’m waving this kind of stuff in front of every camera I can find saying THEY aren’t the Republcians.
I’ll note again that Senator Principled Conservative (TM) Ted Cruz was playing hooky and lounging pool side in Mexico when this was rammed through the Senate by the uniparty. Given that he missed that vote I think it is safe to assume it’s not an important issue to him. How principled and conservative of him.

I’m afraid of voter fraud, of the GOPe attacking trump, of dems attacking trump, of the PRESIDENT for the first time ever maybe, attacking trump, that every little thing he says gets blown out of proportion.

It isn't Trump that Mitt, the Bushes, Kristol, etc. hate per se. They hate the fact that in this election, voters rather than party elites got to select the nominee. Trump wasn't one of the RNC anointed, and the party bosses still can't get over the fact that they aren't as all-powerful as they thought. Romney and Co. wish that they had the same power as the DNC, who put a crown on Hillary's head in spite of some rumblings from voters.
I go grrrrrrrr everytime I read these milktoast progressives being referred to as conservatives. There is nothing conservative about them.

If Trump has accomplished nothing else, he has definitively proven the GOP is lead by people whose highest priority is maintaining the status quo.
