Ironically, my Dad’s younger sister married a man from Oklahoma who was also Indian, and he was able to trace his ancestry back to the Trail of Tears.
And I married a Russian Jew who was able to trace HIS family to an expulsion from a little town near Kiev.
A whole family of outcasts! :-)

My mother’s side was expelled from Spain during the Inquisition and went to Naples. Nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition...

WHEN 4 IS A PRIME NUMBER
BARTOK: QUARTET #4 iN C, SZ. 91, ALLEGRO PIZZICATOThe string quartets of the 20th Century were heavily influenced by the bloodletting of World War I and the nihilism that followed. Music would never be the same. Bela Bartoks quartets are among the best of this dissonant collection.
Bartok and Zoltan Kodaly (ko-DYE-ee) would walk into Hungarian farming villages with a primitive Edison wax cylinder recorder to capture the sounds of ancient Magyar folk tunes before the new century could sweep them away. Sing into the chicken paprikash, one of them would say, as he hid the machine on the table among the food. The quartets of both men are filled with Hungarian folk music.
This is from the fourth of Bartoks quartets and features pizzicato playing, which is plucking the strings.
Bartok: Quartet #4 in C, Sz. 91, fourth movement

WHEN 4 IS A PRIME NUMBER
SHOSTAKOVICH: QUARTET #14 IN F#, OP. 142, ALLEGRETTO Dmitri had his issues with Soviet censors and culture commissars, and he died from his four pack-a-day habit at age 69, only sixteen years before the Soviet Union collapsed. He missed a wonderful moment.
This is the first movement of his next to last quartet, written in 1973. He uses a dissonant musical vocabulary, but it makes musical sense.

WHEN 4 IS A PRIME NUMBER
BARBER: QUARTET IN B MINOR, OP. 11, MOLTO ALLEGRO E APPASSIONATOThis quartet dates from 1935, when Samuel Barber was just starting out. He came from an operatic family and had a fine baritone singing voice.
This is the first movement, which combines a sense of Schubert with Wagner and displays Barbers musical sensibility, which is a bit dissonant at times, but ultimately Romantic. The second subject is gorgeous.

WHEN 4 IS A PRIME NUMBER
BARBER: QUARTET IN B MINOR, OP. 11, ADAGIOThis is one of the most famous pieces by an American composer. In 1936, Arturo Toscanini orchestrated it, and it became an immediate hit, usually reserved for grave occasions of state. Both The Elephant Man and Platoon used it in their soundtracks.
This is the original version, and it is amazingly intense, worthy of three or four handkerchiefs.
Barber: Quartet in B minor, Op. 11, second movement
