Poll: Utah would vote for a Democrat for president over Trump

SALT LAKE CITY — If Donald Trump becomes the Republican Party's nominee, Utahns would vote for a Democrat for president in November for the first time in more than 50 years, according to a new Deseret News/KSL poll.

"I believe Donald Trump could lose Utah. If you lose Utah as a Republican, there is no hope," said former Utah Gov. Mike Leavitt, a top campaign adviser to the GOP's 2012 nominee, Mitt Romney.

he poll found that may well be true. Utah voters said they would reject Trump, the GOP frontrunner, whether former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton or Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders is the Democratic candidate on the general election ballot.

While Clinton was only slightly ahead of Trump — 38 percent to 36 percent — Sanders, a self-declared Democratic socialist, holds a substantial lead — 48 percent to 37 percent over the billionaire businessman and reality TV star among likely Utah voters.

"Wow. Wow. That's surprising," said Chris Karpowitz, co-director of Brigham Young University's Center for the Study of Elections and Democracy. "Any matchup in which Democrats are competitive in the state of Utah is shocking."

So, it’s the Cruz voters supporting Hillary over Trump, for the most part.

And the butthurt GOPee telling pollsters.

Shame. Sounds to me like they’re not even bothering with the pretense of having an opposition. But I guess on the positive side you don’t have to wonder what side is going to win.

That’s just downright nutty. Trump is a lot of things but to the left of hitlery? Come on.

You know, there will be a time when this election is over. Retaining some shred of credibility might be a good idea.

I am very Mormon and I am a conservative Republican like most other Mormons here. But I think Utah politics suck. I have lived in Utah almost 30 years now. Most people I know don’t get involved politically because it is so boring and one sided here.

Utah is pro constitution, pro military, and pro America. Crime is low. I can walk anywhere at any time of night and be safe. The Spanish areas, the Polynesian areas, and the downtown areas are all safe compared to rough areas in other states. Plus it just isn’t very crouded and the weather is nice most of the year.

But then Obama won Florida twice and its considerably more Democrat than it was 4 years ago.
..........................................................
There were 600,000 MORE votes cast in the Republican primary in Florida than in the Democrat Primary the same day. Trump won every county but one, Miami-Dade. Florida is Trump country this year. It is NOT Cruz country or anyone else’s.

The only problem I have is the GOPe going against trump. However, this could make trump stronger since they are vetting the crap out of him. Hillary won’t have anything to use. Cruz hasn’t been vetted at all. In fact the media has given Cruz a free pass this entire primary.

I’m a Cruz supporter, and hope he gets the nomination, but this will not happen. All of these people who say they will not vote for Trump, will eventually come around when the Fate of the republic is at stake.

I'm a Cruz fan but I don't like what's going on with the GOPe/Trump either. It will hurt us in the runup to November no matter who wins.

But I have to disagree on the Cruz Free Ride. It has been the Cruz, Who's Cruz? Campaign by the MSM. They have picked on Trump no doubt but that $2billion in free advertising certainly hasn't hurt him any. I'm sure Cruz would gladly trade his treatment by the press for Donald's.

I totally agree that Trump is brilliant at manipulating the MSM, but IP, you and others keep throwing out that $2 billion in free advertising that Trump is supposedly getting. Have you paused to think how outrageous this claim is? The scale of the number isn't consistent with reality.

Here are the total Fox news revenues for two years. Together they add up to $1.5. billion. How can you possibly believe BS numbers thrown out by the media without checking the claim first.

Advertising Revenues

Fox News 2013_____$776.4 mil

Fox News 2014_____$778.4 mil

Source is.http://www.journalism.org/media-indicators/cable-news-advertising-revenue/

CNN revenues were about half of Fox and MSNBC were less than a third of Fox.

Let's stay consistent with FR tradition by presenting verifiable numbers and leave overblown speculative unknowable wild ass guesses to the DU crowd.

Yes the $2 billion does sound outrageous. I only quoted it once to make a point. But if not a couple of $billion it is still a big number and has certainly given Trump a boost.

But, point taken.

The primary is often ignored by voters but this year people are making the effort to vote in incredible numbers. There is a wave sweeping through the country consisting of new registrations and switching registrations that all spell one thing, TRUMP. People see the damage that has been done by the current administration and want a BIG CHANGE. I say Florida belongs to Trump.

I remain unconvinced. Florida has a heavy black and Hispanic population and the Democrat registrations outnumber Republican. Not only that but the edge that the Democrats have in registrations is growing. There are 400,000 Puerto Ricans now in Florida with several thousand moving here each month. They did now show up to vote in the Democrat primary because they don’t care whether it’s Hillary or Sanders but I suspect they will care when the choice is between Hillary and Trump.
