Republican Leaders Map a Strategy to Derail Donald Trump (Coburn or Perry 3rd party candidate)
New York Times ^ | March 19, 2016 | ALEXANDER BURNS and JONATHAN MARTIN

Republican leaders adamantly opposed to Donald J. Trump’s candidacy are preparing a 100-day campaign to deny him the presidential nomination, starting with an aggressive battle in Wisconsin’s April 5 primary and extending into the summer, with a delegate-by-delegate lobbying effort that would cast Mr. Trump as a calamitous choice for the general election.

Recognizing that Mr. Trump has seized a formidable advantage in the race, they say that an effort to block him would rely on an array of desperation measures, the political equivalent of guerrilla fighting.

There is no longer room for error or delay, the anti-Trump forces say, and without a flawlessly executed plan of attack, he could well become unstoppable.

But should that effort falter, leading conservatives are prepared to field an independent candidate in the general election, to defend Republican principles and offer traditional conservatives an alternative to Mr. Trump’s hard-edged populism. They described their plans in interviews after Mr. Trump’s victories last Tuesday in Florida and three other states.

The names of a few well-known conservatives have been offered up in recent days as potential third-party standard-bearers, and William Kristol, editor of The Weekly Standard, has circulated a memo to a small number of conservative allies detailing the process by which an independent candidate could get on general-election ballots across the country.

Among the recruits under discussion are Tom Coburn, a former Oklahoma senator who has told associates that he would be open to running, and Rick Perry, the former Texas governor who was suggested as a possible third-party candidate at a meeting of conservative activists on Thursday in Washington.

Mr. Coburn, who left the Senate early last year to receive treatment for cancer, said in an interview that Mr. Trump “needs to be stopped”

You might want to read the book “Double Down.” Kind of a behind the scenes look at the 2012 election.

Perry was in no physical shape to run in 2012. Right before he announced for president he had back surgery. He had a partial spinal fusion, a nerve decompression and an experimental therapy not approved by the FDA involving injecting stem cells into his spine.

His foot started tingling. Then it moved up his leg. Then it became a burning. He couldn’t stand still or sit still. He was on major pain meds throughout his short campaign and and sometimes was unable to keep his focus during meetings. Some nights he got no sleep at all. He checked himself into a sleep clinic but it didn’t help.

There’s a scene in the book where after the first debate (not the disastrous one for Perry) when the debate was over Romney asked his chief strategist what he thought of Perry. The guy told Romney that Perry wasn’t in his league, but he also told Romney that before the debate he saw Perry walking up a short flight of stairs and couldn’t make it. He had to get two security guys to help him up the stairs. Quoting from the book, “There’s something wrong with him,” Stevens told Romney. “What do you think?” asked Mitt. “I don’t know,” Stevens said, “but I’m glad it’s not me.”

Sad to say, but Perry was in no shape to run that campaign.

Another interesting quote from the book. “While Perry was in Gotham, he met with Trump, who introduced him to Kim Kardashian.”

Bullshtt.

Name how many Red States Hillary can plausibly win.

Then name how many Blue States Cruz can win.

Trump can put places likes NY, NJ, Penn, MD and others in play.

Let’s make America great again.

Anderson actually got 5.79 million votes. Reagan beat Carter by 8.42 million votes anyway.

Of course, in March 1980, they were saying that Reagan had to be stopped, he was the only Republican certain to lose to Carter, he had high negatives, etc, etc.

Sound familiar?

I know that. I know that Perry was in no shape physically to run. He shouldn’t have tried it, but he got well and would still have beaten Obama which Romney could not do.

As far as Kim Kardashian goes, not surprised that Trump knew her and did who knows what with her.

Rick Perry is a good family man who probably had no interest in that tramp.

Perry couldn’t get much support in 2012 or 2016.

His 3rd party would be about the same.

Coburn has disappointed a lot of people. He got to the point we never knew which side of an issue he was going to be on. I doubt him as a 3rd party would entice many Trump supporters.

==

These instigators still do not understand who the Trump supporters are or why they are supporting Trump.

These old party guys just do not get it. And that is the problem — and it has been growing for years.

Kristol -- a neocon and member of the GOP elite

That William Kristol could be a member of the GOP elite tells you everything you need to know.

How many states did Obama win?

Hillary won’t get the black vote Obama did, but there is a built-in liberal base for her.

Cruz polls extremely well against Hillary.

Trump is disliked by a majority of Republicans. He can’t win without a good turnout of Republicans. How many people will stay home because they can’t stand him?

And, by the way, you might notice that my response did not include a barnyard term.

Coburn talked a lot and did very little. He is easily bamboozled and follows the party line. He isn’t at all what he said he was going to be. Typical of our “public servants”.

One other card Trump can play is to simply tell his people to NOT VOTE AT ALL if it appears that the GOPe is being successful in handing the presidency to Hillary.

I don't think he'd have to say it. We'd be so angry, I'm not sure we muster what it would take to go out and vote.

Read his health care on his website. You have not presented it correctly. Why not use the actual plan since it’s there in black and white.

You also misrepresented his plan for planned parenthood. He plans to shut off their money if they don’t stop doing abortions.

All of trump’s policies are conservative.

Saying ‘lying Ted’ means nothing and is stupid.

What good is Trump’s platform if he won’t stand on it for the next few years.

How many positions has he been consistent on in the last ten or twenty years.

The truth is you trumpers are infatuated by the man but know very little about him.

somewhere in this thread I said that trump supporters were delusional. this proves it. a recent poll had hillary obliterating trump by 20 points in NY. NJ would be even worse. I don't think MD would look any better with trump than cruz.

it's literally insane to think that trump would carry NY.

A poll just came out Friday (yesterday) matching Trump and Hillary in New York State. It has Hillary winning by 19 % 55-36. Check realclearpolitics for details.

What reason do you have to believe that Trump would be competitive there other than him saying so.

He makes these claims, and then for proof of his claim he says , “that I can tell you.” and that’s supposed to make it true.
