What has happened to Free Republic? [What difference at this point can it possibly make?]

Posted on 03/17/2016 3:13:11 PM PDT by katwoman5779

Since Obuma was elected to POTUS, I have been coming to Free Republic to get news, opinions and a few laughs. Most of the serious posts were bemoaning the out of control government and what could be done about it. "Oh Whoa is Me!". Then along comes a constitutional conservative. For the first time since Ronald Reagan, we have a constitutional candidate running for the GOP nomination. This man was elected by conservatives to go to Washington and stand up to the elites that no longer listen to the American people. He didn't go to Washington and "fall in" with the crowd. He went there and stood up to them just like he said it would - calling a spade a spade. I'm sorry, but I don't understand how otherwise intelligent people can fall for the likes of Donald Trump. This man was donating to the same people we were fighting to throw out of office the last eight years. Suddenly he is a conservative after years of joining with the liberals to promote big fat bloated government. He is not an outsider. He has been greasing the palms of the slime bags in Washington for 30 years. He can't even define what conservatism is. Wake up America. You are no better than the sycophants that suck up to Obuma. You can't see that Trump is just pushing your buttons with his rhetoric - just like Obuma pushed his sycophants buttons. The hate I see on Free Republic for Ted Cruz, Mark Levin and all the other great conservative leaders remind me of liberal websites. It is disgusting.

History also shows that this election is nothing like any other.

As I said, you are either a liar, or have a lousy memory. Though yes, you might just not have read as many threads o( AND THERE WERE MANY OF THEM, I DON'T KNOW HOW YOU MISSED THEM ALL ) that were filled with facts and VERY vile posts; both.

The name calling and "hatred", here, goes waaaaaaaaaaaaay back. Drudge was VICIOUSLY attacked and not just one time! It was SO bad ( anti-Semite slurs and all !) That Matt removed his link to FR not once....BUT TWICE, before finally replacing the link again!

Bad....you wanna talk BAD? You don't know what BAD was here!

When you have certain posters who DEMAND that EVERYONE only thinks one way, THEIR WAY, or else...there is going to be some push-back eventually.

Look, digging back in memory vaults and dragging FR's dirty laundry back into the light ( and I've only slightly touched on some things ) is NOT the kind of thing I'm happy about doing, but did so to prove my point. Everyone is allowed to have their own opinion; they aren't allowed to have their own "facts" !

You are right on point. Larry Elder said last night that the reality is we are now a center left country. He is probably right that a Ted Cruz could never be elected with these demographics, while a Donald Trump can.

I believe that Cruz is a true conservative, but have been thoroughly disappointed (and surprised) by how ineffective he has been in communicating his message. He needed conservatives like Dan Bongino and Dave Brat to school him on how to communicate conservative principles to everyday people working hard to provide for their families and leave this world a better place for their children. Guys (and gals) who communicate like Bongino and Brat CAN convince Reagan democrats to embrace conservatism.

My impression of Trump is that he does not have a set of core principles (conservative or otherwise) that inform his positions, other than the importance of negotiating deals that are in the best interest of his business, which he knows like the back of his (large) hands.

I am not so sure he is as knowledgeable about what policies are truly in the best interest of this country and how to restore it as a constitutional republic. Trump exhibits behavioral characteristics that remind me of Obama’s narcissism, and transcripts of his answers to questions reveal a stunning lack of substance.

That said, I DO believe Trump loves this country and has the intention to “make America great again”. It’s a crap shoot as to whether or not he is going to stop illegal immigration (or halt the “rights” that are bestowed on people who cross over into this welfare state), nominate conservative judges, repeal illegal executive orders and so on.

But if it’s between Trump and a proud-to-be-a-Democrat, I’m voting for the guy who at least SAYS he is against violation of our immigration laws, intends to nominate a judge like Scalia, and states that Obama has overstepped the bounds of executive power.

I can’t think of any proud-to-be-a-Democrat running (or in the wings) whose victory would result in anything other than a permanent voting bloc for far left politicians.

I wanted Cruz to win, but I will vote for Trump. In this case, I think the devil that I DON’’T know is better than the devils I do know (all proud-to-be-Democrats, Jeb! Rubio, Kasich, Ryan, etc. etc., as Trump would say)

If Trump wins, will I feel the sense of victory and elation I felt when Dave Brat defeated Eric Cantor? NO. Wary, skeptical, anxiously hopeful is about as good as it’s gonna’ get for me. But I will be relieved that it’s not a proud-to-be-a-Democrat for 8 years (and the rest of my life).

History shows favorability matters in the presidential general election.

The problem is both Trump and Hillary are disliked by the bothers.

What could end up happening is most voters just stay home and then it becomes a game of who has the more enthusiastic base of supporters and a better GOTV drive

Conservative = “Low Tax, including low taxes on trade.” (among other things)

the question I keep asking of free traders: if America gets into a lengthy war and loses because it no longer has the industrial base to sustain a long war, how is the trade policy that led to that situation “conservative” ?

and how does such a trade policy contribute to a strong military ?

Yes, with THAT I agree completely!

Things have been allowed that never were before.

Mods either don't bother or turn a blind eye to many things that would have been removed, once upon a time and the same is true re TIME OUTS and there's been NO PURGE this time around.

The last BIG PURGE went too far; now there have been none and bans have been reversed in weeks.

OTOH, it's all just the usual primary/election time on FR as far as attacks go.

The problem is both Trump and Hillary are disliked by the voters.

That may be historically unprecedented. (But note that Trump's favorable/unfavorable gap is over twice Clinton's.)

Trump may certainly not be that pure conservative, even by a long shot, but he seems to want to get there. Has Jeff Sessions been completely fooled? Phyllis Schafly? Palin? Dr. Jeffress? Jerry Falwell Jr.?

Trump is surrounding himself with the right people and he’s showing the backbone to fight.

I started out liking Cruz, but realized pretty quickly that he’d never win the general election. Sorry, but there’s something very unsettling about him. He sounds so much like a slick and phony lawyer/politician. I think the left would chew him up and spit him out. They won’t do that with Mr. Trump. Other way around.

You are seeing the forest through the trees—which many here cannot.

The fact is that people believe that Donald trump, irrespective of all else, including his past, will actually do the things he says.

And if he will, it will be good for our country.

You hit the nail on the head. Thank you :)

In my heart I cannot trust Cruz any more than I could Rubio after the Gang of Eight.

That's pretty raw, considering Cruz fought the Gang of 8.

Lots of people wondering the same thing - you are far from alone. It certainly isn’t the same place it was when I first came here via the “White Water File” back around 18 years ago now...it’s not even the same place it was one year ago. Somehow now the solution to the “establishment” is to go full on big government statism for a substantial number of people. These types were always around from time to time, but it was normally a fleeting minority that were just a nuisance.

Knowledge and fact have been tossed aside...for example the other day some of us were being blasted as stupid for suggesting Puerto Rico had ever been part of the United States (its only been part of the U.S. for 118 years now...) - that’s the substance of the type of conversations becoming common place. Before, candidates who supported organizations like Planned Parenthood were rightfully abhorred - now people fully embrace and praise him for praising the organization. It’s okay he has supported ultra liberal candidates and policies for decades because he was a “businessman” - and of course, the best kinds of businessmen are those that work to screw over the entire rest of the country for his own personal profit (but supposedly wouldn’t do that with the power of political office...he’d a be a different person there - for some reason). Private property rights and 1st amendment rights are no longer important - if you think they are, you are now a RINO / GOPe operative. And the list goes on and on.

I no longer care what Trump’s position on anything was back then... I DO care that he was an American businessman doing work, building things, paying wages to employees, paying taxes... and not hiding some foreign citizenship skeletons in his heritage closet.

I DO care that Teddy was a Canadian in the Senate, and if I had my way, that would ALSO be illegal. Hiding from his constituents was morally wrong, like the lies it has become clear that he tells, all-the-while posing as a morally superior christian leader.

Trump is no moral christian posing to be the supposed “face of God” which is blasphemy that any human other than Christ himself could ever allow to be applied to his person. But Rafael seems to think that people attributing this to his person, is somehow, tolerable. It is not.

God sets over the nations whomsoever he wills, even the basest of men...
But I want a Patton or MaCarthur for president, instead of one who seems to be a limp-wristed, dual-citizenship, pajama-wearing, pee-wee Herman type... which is how I and many other “conservatives” have come to perceive Rafael Cruz... No sober minded humility for the “face of God” fella... nope.

People just don’t like him.
For president of these United States, or any national government office of ANY kind, I don’t want Rafael either.

We will never see eye to eye on this, and since you are a Cruzer... who hates trump... and I was a Cruzer, who now wants his money back... because Trump is more of a man I think represents me... and the alpha males I know... there is no expectation here but an expectation of mounting hostility. Go ahead and vote for cruz, hillary or whoever you want to write in, but we will win and make America Great Again without you and yours... thank you very much.

Occupy Ted standing with Bill Ayers and the violent communists who attacked conservatives in Chicago?

Isn't it amazing what a graphic can do?

The one with the inset picture of Cruz someone put on the pic of Ayres walking on the flag.

You are a victim of propaganda, FRiend.

Cruz never stood with those protesters, not physically, and the first comment he made was that the responsibility for the actions of the protesters lies with the protesters.

He voiced no agreement with their methods, nor solidarity with their cause.

Lies, lies, and more lies in the media, and the most insipid were images cobbled together to make a connection that never existed except in the Alinsky-driven brains of their creators.
