Ohio Gov. John Kasich leads GOP presidential front-runner Donald Trump by 5 points in Mr. Kasichs home state, according to a poll released on the eve of the March 15 primary there.
Mr. Kasich had the support of 40 percent of likely GOP primary voters in Ohio in the Monmouth University poll released Monday, followed by Mr. Trump at 35 percent.
Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas was at 15 percent and Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida was at 5 percent.
The Ohio race is tight, but with Rubio floundering in Florida, Kasich could potentially bolster his standing as the establishments alternative to Trump and Cruz with a win here, said Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute.
The Monmouth survey, conducted Friday to Sunday, is about in line with other recent polling on the Buckeye State; the latest Real Clear Politics average shows Mr. Kasich with a slight edge over Mr. Trump there.

Ohio has been trending blue which is why a “Conservative” like Kasich was elected Governor.
Kasich has favorable poll numbers in his home state.
I believe the Ohio Republican Party endorsed Kasich.
Close elections generally come down to turn out. If Trump supporters are the more motivated, Trump will win.
But, if by some stretch of the imagination, Kasich got the nomination, Ohio would need a new Governor.
Boy that is devastating!! That letter needs to be displayed a lot. Kasich is not only for AMNESTY but he is against the second amendment and was a hero to Bill Clinton!!!
OHIO likes amnesty? Hard to believe.
Well, this will give Trump a great opportunity to “overperform” against the polls tomorrow, just as he did in Michigan (where Kasich was also slated to do well).
He is far more likely to appear stronger than he actually is. Do not believe this is a factor with respect to Donald Trump.
This, then, offers a reason for Trump supporters to work all the harder, the last few hours.
I think the anti-Trump forces are combining in Ohio to stop Trump.
Kasich is a lame duck governor. He’s in his second term (reelected to a four year term in 2014) in a two term limit State. He’s the odds on favorite to challenge Sherrod Brown for a Senate seat in 2018, unless pigs fly and he becomes president.
We will see.
If Kasich wins, he will have 25% of the delegates Trump has already.
... or is elected somebody’s vice president this year.
Boom.
Looks like it will be up to the independents and crossover Reagan democrats
Kasich goes neocon
I just sent that to Drudge.
WOO HOOO!! GO KASICH GO!! AMNESTY IN THE FIRST 100 DAYS AND SOROS’ SUPPORT!! GO ESTABLISHMENT GO!!!!
You would think in his home state he would do better
than this. I would love to see Trump take it.
You guys are hilarious. You act as if you are discovering dirt on Kasich that has never before been exposed. There is nothing new here. All has been out there since the first time he ran for governor.
That’s the problem with Kasick, Cruz and to some extent Rubio. They have sailed through the primary easily because only trump has been vetted. So now everyone thinks Cruz and Kasick are pure as driven snow. Hillary will not them get off so easily. That is what primaries are for. Learn everything about the candidate before the nomination. The Democratic Party learned from Edwards that perceived perfection can bite back big.
I doubt very seriously Trump loses Ohio to Kasich no matter what this poll says.....especially after Kasich’s stupid amnesty comments today.
