The incident happened Tuesday night after some kind of altercation on the 700 block of South Second Street in Philadelphia's Queen Village section.
The 65-year-old resident has a valid permit to carry a weapon, and he used his .45 caliber when he and his wife were attacked.
Police are calling the shooting self defense.

It was just after 8:30 p.m. when the couple was walking home from work. They told police two men passed them. One of those men said to the husband, "What are you looking at?" then punched him, threw him to the ground and continued assaulting him.
Then they turned their attention to the wife, in her 50s, punching and knocking her down as well.

"I think the moral of the story is you just never know who's packing heat," said Conte. " 'Old man Sal' was packing so you gotta watch out. And it's a shame it went down. I hope those kids are OK."
The couple's attorney said they tried to get away, but the two men kept coming after them.
"They attack him. They attacked his wife. He begged to stop. Him and his wife pulled away. They kept on coming," said Kenneth Young. "He explained he has a firearm. They said they don't care. They punched him in the face."
The couple was also treated for injuries. Police and the attorney said the husband suffered serious wounds to his eye and face.
"This was a matter of life or death. If he didn't do what he did, and he didn't have the training to do it. I think we would be at a funeral right now. It's that bad," Young said.

Never explain to some attacker that you’re armed. Such claims are cheap, easy to make. They’re likely to either think you’re bluffing or take steps to really put you down fast and hard, possibly so they can steal the gun you’ve claimed to have.

All too true, but it would be more “just” if they had both had their johnsons removed with a bullet so they could not reproduce.

Take away all the big cities... Charlotte, Raleigh/Durham... and the associated yuppy-filled, starbucks-drinking soccermom suburbs, and you are left with great rural countryside.
NC is 90% rural farmland and mountains. It is the 10% of the cities that have turned this into a purple... almost blue state.
I am fortunate enough to live in the dairy farms of the Appalachian foothills. I avoid Charlotte any way possible. Its like two different countries, 20 miles apart.
I am told Virginia is the same way... eastern side and western side are different as night and day.
They seem to be white.
The video reminds me of why I never watch local news: three minutes of flashing lights and police moving around, apparently at random, in the dark.

I live outside Pittsburgh. Even though the city is Democrat, there are a LOT of vets here, and lots of good people.

I this area, I am absolutely color-blind. I am disappointed that they are not dead, regardless of color, and the best that we can hope for is that the bag on the side that one of them will be wearing will sharply reduce their tendency towards violence. I’ve got to believe that a bullet that size is going to leave quite a hole.

With a .45 that’s a pretty thin margin, and bad strategy.

I am glad we agree on the color blindness issue and also on what we hoped would have been the result of his having to defend himself i.e. two less thugs.
Apparently the citizen was not in a killing mood. I think he had a lot of control over his responses and really didn’t want to go through the shock of seeing two young men die. I’d like to hear the rest of the story.
