Trump: I'm 'Changing' My Position on Immigrant Visas
The Hill ^ | 3/3

Posted on 03/03/2016 7:16:20 PM PST by nickcarraway

Donald Trump on Thursday night said he's changing his stance on visas for highly skilled immigrant workers.

"I’m changing it, and I’m softening the position because we need to have talented people in this country," Trump said at the Fox News GOP debate in Michigan.

Trump's comments came after debate moderator Megyn Kelly raised the issue. Kelly noted that Trump had previously opposed those visas, saying they "decimate American workers," but appeared to change his position at an earlier CNBC debate. Trump said recipients of the visas go to high-profile U.S. universities and "desperately" want to remain in the country. He said they should be allowed to stay and work in places that need high-skilled workers, such as Silicon Valley.

"We need highly-skilled people in this country," Trump said. "For that purpose, we absolutely have to be able to keep the brainpower in this country."

Meet the New Boss.

Same as the Old Boss.

Yah. What was the old Russian joke? Same people. Different names.

No, I don’t see it.

Trump will not stop legal immigration. I don’t want him to.

He will stop illegal immigration. I want him to.

This fight without him would have been YeB! Rubio! and CruZ!

Not a damn thing would have been the border.

Tell me one question the GOPe and FOX News had about the border tonight. You Cannot.

So did you get these employees from a contractor? Are they full time on your payroll? Have any of them been replaced by Americans?

There are about 3.5 billion people in an age range that is sought/scouted for fertile and powerful minds. Of this age group there are statistically about 0.03% who have the brain genetics to alter technology and science. That makes about 1 million geniuses from the brain crop.

Very similar to scouting Olympic or Pro athletes, the genetics is key to reach the highest level of performance.

America has quite a few of those million geniuses. But we want all of them because we don’t want them working for Iran, North Korea, Pakistan. In the market for brains, we want to corner the market.

The problem is the Cheap Labor Express and their abuse. They are screwing it up for everyone and they are damaging the science crop.

So we have a problem.

Donald is smart enough to recognize the problem. Let’s see what he says in the days ahead on this.

He’s playing people. He has no real principles, unless you count the liberal ones.

I think I agree with that small percentage.

but man, nothing ever stops in this country at the point it was supposed to.

OxyContin was originally ONLY FOR CANCER. now it’s given out for pain without any x rays needed.

gun control I the classic slippery slope.

abortion is another. now it’s partial. soon it will be out of the womb and left on a table.

too many slippery slopes in this country

and lobbyists. too many dam lobbyists.

trumps money should make him an honest man in the WH

BTW, what’s going on tonight.

Must have debated 8 trump people and no mud slinging or insults on either side?

it’s a BEAUTFUL thing :)

makes it so much more enjoyable.

You don’t get it. Illegal immigration has destroyed many segments of the USA.

Do you support open borders of all nations?

“Mitt was running for pres in 12, trump publicly said his proposed immigration policy was mean to Mexicans and would cost him the Hispanic vote.

It’s public knowledge you can find it if you really wanted to know or admit it.... but you already know that Don’ t you?”

Okay...now what is your point?

This is straight out of Sessions’s playbook.

The fine print includes this key point: Companies hiring the “highly skilled workers” would have to pay at least what their American employees in the same jobs, made.

Thus, decreasing the incentive for foreign born workers to even be hired by companies that don’t want to pay going rates.

This also takes the power away from special-interest groups who pay to influence our legislators who enable them to hire cheap foreign STEM employees.

It gives our American graduates with STEM degrees, the advantage b/c they’d not have to compete for jobs being given to less-qualified & cheaper-paid foreigners.

LOL. It would almost be worth it to see Trump elected, just to see what your response would be when Trump makes all illegals citizens. You’d still be saying it was a great thing, for reason XY and Z.

Donald is smart enough to recognize the problem.

Do we have any proof of that, other than his claiming he is?

So what would foreign graduates do if they weren’t hired out of college and given H-1B status? Maybe work at Wendy’s with the American graduates who can’t find work or will we give them welfare? Send them home where they live with their parents like many American graduates.

Wow, people don’t get it. This is a middle class issue, not the rare Einstein. There are companies right now making decisions about shifting more offshore or bringing in more H-1B and other flavor visas because tech is downturning again.

When you have the frontrunner stating the case for inversion holidays, lower corporate taxes, etc. and that’s STILL not enough that you have to “soften H-1B policy,” it’s going to squeeze the middle class and their paychecks.

Stand with the American people, and they won’t only love you for it, but they will fight for you.

Don’t think that recognizing true genius is making others less valuable or less worthy. A genius chemist could be a talented plumber if the opportunity to unlock their genius was never available. Just like a top tier concert pianist would never be known without a piano.

Most geniuses are extremely humble and often timid. They have genetics that allow them to see or create things that normal people can’t fathom. But they often don’t know how to make a fine wine or cook a good steak, and without such things life can be miserable.

It just so happens we seek out the science geniuses (both domestic and foreign) and try to recruit them to our science infrastructure and way of life. But it’s becoming increasingly difficult because of our messed up politics. When we can’t get the top talent either domestically or abroad, we lose. And getting cheap tech workers is a loser too.

“You are mistaken about your foreign workers being a good thing when your countrymen and women are out of work.”

Not in this case, it is common practice in this location because there is difficulty in hiring locals, he explained that.

But, having said that...Trump hires literally tens of thousands of employees who are American citizens...how many do your masters hire? Not one, I don’t know that they have ever had to meet a payroll, much less create a virtual business empire. Use your brain amihow!!!

No, we get t.

There are two problems here. You see only one.

There is the problem of getting Vasily to extend the frontiers of physics through the power of his beautiful mind and there is the problem of Vijay plunking away at PHP Python working at lower wages to maintain an IT system.

You see Vijay but you don’t see Vasily.

Oh thanks for the information, TBF!

Good to know.

It’s a rough situation and I don’t know the answer unless these CEOs man up and act together and develop a love of the USA and their fellow man.

The issue is, either way, regardless of what anyone does - if a company wants cheaper labor and can’t bring it onshore, they will offshore or even move parts of the company overseas.
