Sen. Ted Cruz and Ben Carson reportedly met privately in a storage closet Thursday night in Greenville to try and cool relations between the two campaigns ahead of the primary here. But the clandestine meeting allegedly did not go well.
Cruz called the meeting, The Daily Beast reports, to smooth over what has been a contentious public spat with the Carson campaign ever since the Iowa caucus. Carson accused Cruz of using dirty campaign tactics after one of Cruz's staffers saw a CNN report and told voters Carson was dropping out of the race right before voting started in Iowa.
The meeting, which the Carson campaign confirmed to The Beast, took place prior to the Conservative Review convention and lasted nearly 25 minutes despite Carson only agreeing to five minutes, a source said. It took so long Carson was late to his speaking arrangement during the convention.
"We weren't going to comment to the press on it, but it seems pretty clear that the other party involved had a different agenda," Jason Osborne, a spokesperson for Carson's campaign told The Beast. "How else could we perceive that to be?"
Osborne said that "the meeting did not go well" and was on short notice, so he didn't have time to prepare Carson.
The former neurosurgeon reportedly told Cruz "we agree to disagree." As Carson put it, "we disagree on accountability and culpability," according to Osborne.
The meeting apparently had no chairs and it's even unclear if the lights were on in the closet as Secret Service waited outside.
After speaking to the convention, Carson crossed paths with Cruz in a hallway, and the Texas senator reportedly didn't even look at Carson, his campaign said.

Why would they meet in a storage closet? This is B.S.
Carson has two things going for him: he’s intelligent and he’s conservative. But there are thousands of others of whom the came can be said, none of whom has the experience and aptitude to be President of the United States.
I’m just curious....
Every campaign probably had people watching CNN, why did no other campaign report on it? Even if and that is a big if they genuinely thought that Carson was dropping out, why didn’t they confirm it with the campaign before they announced to everyone to tell the caucus voters? Candy Carson was at one of them and she had to convince people that he wasn’t dropping out. Why in the heck would she be there if he was dropping out??? Didn’t that give the Cruz campaign some thought that the information they had wasn’t right?
I don’t care what CNN said or didn’t say that made them think that he was dropping out, they should have confirmed it.
I’m tired and hope I worded it properly, but I’m sick and tired of people giving excuses for the “misunderstanding” when no other campaign “misunderstood”.
"You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time."
Did Ted Cruz wear his WWE belt & Carson tried to stab him but it broke.
I suspect you may be right that Rubio is the next target. I assume Bush’s meager group of voters would shift to Rubio. What abt Kasick voters? Carson voters are another question. I can’t imagine them ever considering Cruz, so where do they go?
Well as a matter of fact he did.
We don’t know who leaked it. Cruz had nothing to gain by leaking it as it wasn’t favorable for him. Carson’s people could have very well leaked it to ding Cruz some more. Its politics.
I read a previous story that mentioned neutral ground at http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2016/02/19/cruz-carson-held-secret-meeting-about-dirty-tricks.html. I’m sorry about the confusion; I thought it was the same article so didn’t read it this time.
The article on this thread tells exactly who leaked it... It sure was not Dr. Carson, but Cruz’s campaign spokesman...
This article is about somebody asking the Carson campaign what they had already heard about..
Master manipulators... and then play the ever so Jesus loves me junk.
See #47. It has a video of Carson describing the room. He didn’t think it was a “closet”.
No problem... this article reads like nobody from the Carson campaign said anything about it....until this article and they were asked about it... but it also says that Cruz’s campaign spokesman did do the talking.
Well the article has a number of factual errors - like it was a closet with no chairs. Carson on the video I linked directly contradicts that. So no, we don’t know what the truth is yet. And yes, you are spewing crap with your “Master manipulators... and then play the ever so Jesus loves me junk.” without the facts even being known. You’re the one injecting Jesus into the conversation.
I am NOT the one that jumped to conclusions. I am not the one who believes I am superior to anyone. I have grown weary of the, YES, master manipulations of all things CRUZ.
Right... The “article” doesn’t even quote Carson correctly...
The votes have been cast in South Carolina and Cruz won nothing. I am still shocked and that is not said in sarcasm.
Well its a winner take all state.
You win or you lose.
The other campaigns also spoke about this. You just didn’t hear about it because the goal was to hit Cruz. And that should tell you something too.
And just to correct you and nearly every article I’ve seen about this: the Cruz campaign did NOT say that Carson was dropping out. They either said that he wasn’t going to NH and NC, or that he was taking a break from campaigning after IA or suspending campaigning for a while (all of which were accurate).
One article claimed that everybody knows that suspending a campaign means you’re quitting, but if that was the case Carson had already quit when he suspended his campaign to deal with the death of one of his campaign workers.
The point was that if Carson was not going to campaign, maybe his supporters should consider supporting another conservative who WOULD be campaigning.
I guess that’s his “enormous frontal lobe” taking over. :0)
Baloney. This whole article cites the CArson campaign as their source. From the article:
“The meeting, which the Carson campaign confirmed to The Beast, took place prior to the Conservative Review convention and lasted nearly 25 minutes despite Carson only agreeing to five minutes, a source said. It took so long Carson was late to his speaking arrangement during the convention.
âWe werenât going to comment to the press on it, but it seems pretty clear that the other party involved had a different agenda,â Jason Osborne, a spokesperson for Carsonâs campaign told The Beast. âHow else could we perceive that to be?â
The whole article was written with the perspective of the Carson campaign. You think that Cruz’s people would leak to the press that Carson only agreed to 5 minutes but Cruz took 25 minutes and made Carson late?
That whole comment about “the other party had a different agenda... How else could we perceive that to be?” seems to be a poorly-framed insinuation that the other party wanted to disclose the meeting but it’s obvious that this article relies on Carson sources, not Cruz sources.
Please just stop twisting things - and then insinuating that Cruz’s people are doing the very thing you are doing, and then playing “the ever so Jesus loves me junk”.
