Grading the South Carolina Debate: Trump, Carson, Rubio, Cruz, Kasich, Bush
Opinion ^ | 14 Feb 16 | Xzins

Posted on 02/14/2016 4:36:44 AM PST by xzins

1. Trump, A+ -- Fought like a champion. Finally, someone with the guts to call out our nation for being 15 years at war, still killing our sons and daughters so politicians can put a feather in their cap, and most of them calling for more war. Bush wants BWIII, Bush War III

2. Carson, A-, quietly but effectively said that he was in it for the people, that he'd been asked to run, and that he wasn't there for any other reason. Outstanding.

3. Rubio, B+, Say what you like, but Rubio wiped the floor with Cruz on the immigration question. The April 2015 video shows Cruz supporting 'talking about what to do with immigrants after the wall is built.' It shows him calling for massive increases in H1B visas.

4. Cruz, C, Clearly the most knowledgeable about the supreme court vacancy. He needs to stop misrepresenting others' positions. Trump called him out on the Planned Parenthood question. Trump has clearly called for defunding PP if they keep doing abortions. If they voluntarily stop doing abortions, then he would support their doing breast exams and pap smears and the like.

5. Kasich, C, Did a Mr. Rogers in the neighborhood act. Hillary Clinton will eat his lunch.

6. Bush, F-, This man is totally lacking in insight. He actually called for another war in the middle east AND he wants to fund Al Qaeda in Syria. He's simply not up to the task.

Moreover, Trump had not mentioned Jeb’s Dad or Mom at all.

Why in the world did Jeb bring up his mom and dad?

“My dad says you better stop talking to me like that....”

I think that’s absolutely the part of his immaturity that that came from.

I’d say you’re not super good at judging someone’s character. Carson the pol...isn’t quite the same as Carson the surgeon.

It’s like being a successful basketball player...then you switch to football....it’s a whole new game...Carson knew that, he’s not just very good at it....hence he probably wouldn’t be a good president...after all that is what all this is about.

I support Trump.

Carson won’t replace Trump — nor will anyone else according to the polls — so my comments about his integrity are just a matter of my being honest about the man.

It still seems to me that Free Republic is split about evenly between Trump and Cruz supporters.

Cru actually is smarter than all the rest of them and almost everyone else. I have no problem admitting it.

It’s pretty hard to change minds at this stage. I don’t see supporters for Rubio, Bush, Kasich, or Carson standing up to be counted here on FR. It’s either Trump or Cruz.

The primary itself is going to go on, and I might have to decide to support Cruz if he wins, and others might have to support Trump if he wins.

I believe that some will go 3rd party, and contrary to others, I just see that as their choice. Been there and done that.

But not this time. The stakes are too high. And Scalia’s death just took them to fever pitch.

This really is the most important election of my many decades. It is among the most important in the history of our nation.

I support Trump...but I thought Carson and Trump was totally disingenuous about calling Cruz a liar, a cheat and trying to steal the election. I believe any fair minded person could see right through that. Carson’s campaign had been imploding for a long time, his donor’s had been drying up with declining poll numbers. He was just trying to make Cruz and scapegoat.

I was surprised Trump got in on it, given that there was nothing to question when Trump started personally bashing Carson. Carson didn’t even make a whimper when Trump used ‘pathological’ to make a casual link to “child-molester”

So my respect for your integrity would go up if you admit Carson over-reacted to Cruz and under-reacted to Trump.

Did you know that the most recently released financial contributions data showed Carson in first place?

He collected 23 million dollars.

Correction:

“most recently released QUARTERLY financial contributions data”

I left out the word quarterly.

I’m inclined to agree with you, though I actually didn’t hear Carson say that. Had a sick kid so I could have missed it, or sometimes his dulcet slow tone turns off my brain and i only hear spa music.

Problem soon for Trump, maybe after the SC vote. I was listening to Richard Reardon, former mayor of LA, on the radio this morning, and he is frustrated by his Republican Party. He may be typical of the socially liberal Republican, the moderate. He was finding he agreed most with.. Kasich. I think Trump gives off an “extremist” vibe when he too is socially more liberal. I honestly think he needs to soon start distinguishing himself as right for the times against a milquetoast Kasich.

It’s been a long campaign, to think SC hasn’t even voted yet. It will slowly but surely turn into a different ballgame, once we get to the general. Not all Cruz supporters should be equated to the more aggressive ones on this site. Some are a lot nicer, and will be able to prioritize when the time comes.

It’s about time that conservatives stop pretending it’s “patriotic” to constantly send our young men and women over to wars that aren’t our business so that they can get their arms and legs blown off or be killed. It’s time to end this nonsense about “either you support the wars or else you don’t support the troops.”

If Trump’s making that case, then it’s a serious, serious point in his favour.

I like the way you said this.

I remember Carson in his lead up to deciding whether to enter the race or not. He had thousands on facebook, twitter, etc. giving him support.

They don't seem to be turning out for him.

Cruz really spends too much time on incorrect gotcha assessments.

I was frustrated with Trump last night saying W didn’t keep us safe, when 9/11 was definitely planned far before his admin and I’m not sure he could have prevented it — he could have, but not knowing it was coming, it would have been a superman expectation.

Hindsight, I hate W Bush for getting all those kids killed and injured, for his pro-illegal stance, for worsening health care, for never articulating Conservative a constitutional principles but giving his lunch money to the oligarchy/ media/Dems EVERY DAY and doing their homework for them too. He just sat there and allows them to characterize him.

But I blame Bill more than W for 9/11.

And he’s one of two outsiders left. Unless you count Cruz as an outsider.
