Donald Trump Says He’d Consider These Two Judges for U.S. Supreme Court

During the Republican debate on Saturday night, Donald Trump floated two names as potential nominees to the U.S. Supreme Court: Judge Diane S. Sykes and Judge Bill Pryor.

“We could have a Diane Sykes or a Bill Pryor, we have some fantastic people,” Trump told the audience. Both judges are well-known conservatives serving on the federal level.

Who is Diane S. Sykes?

Sykes is a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. She was nominated by George W. Bush and confirmed in 2004. She went to Northwestern University and attended Marquette University Law School. She was dropped as a name for the U.S. Supreme Court under President George W. Bush. She was part of the 2011 panel that held a Chicago ban on firing ranges unconstitutional. Prior to being appointed on the federal court, Sykes served as Justice on the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

Who is Bill Pryor?

Pryor is a federal judge in the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit. He was nominated by President George W. Bush in 2003. His nomination was filibustered so in 2004, President Bush installed the former Alabama Attorney General on the court during a congressional recess appointment. Democrats scrutinized Pryor for some of his conservative stands, including on Roe v. Wade. Pryor previously said, according to confirmation hearing testimony, that Roe was “the worst abomination in constitutional law in history.” After a higher court ruling on a Alabama execution case, he allegedly ridiculed the Supreme Court by saying “This issue should not be decided by nine octogenarian lawyers who happen to sit on the Supreme Court.” Most recently, Pryor was nominated by President Obama to sit on the United States Sentencing Commission.

Uhm - I think that statement was meant as a joke. But please don’t let me interrupt your TDS precipitated delusions.

This pronouncement by DJT was VERY inappropriate. During this time, Judge Scalia should be eulogized and mourned. Period.

For all of his self-proclaimed *good breeding*, Trump falls flat. His veneer is beginning to peel.

Wrong. Actually the poster was serious. Do a search yourself instead of posting nonsense to me.

And "Uhm" do something about your speech impediment, Trumpbot.

Is this meant to be some sort of strange satire or something? Trump and everyone else on the debate stage were specifically asked, in one form or another, about Scalia being replaced. It would have been ridiculous if they all just answered, “I’ll not going to discuss this. We should just mourn him now.” It would have looked like a total cop out.

A lot of people have an interest in what sort of justices Trump would appoint. Good for him for addressing that legitimate concern. Your post just sounds perverse—and I say that as someone who had great respect for Justice Scalia.

Trump’s sister is not an “extreme LIEberal” as you so, uh, colorfully put it. She has been attacked in the past from the left for being hard on illegal immigrants, being abrasively un-PC, and for not toeing the feminist line. Now, there’s nothing wrong with complaining about her being a moderate if you wish, but you shouldn’t misrepresent her overall record from her cases and speeches.

Murder of innocents is an extremist view that she and her charlatan brother hold.

Of course, Trump was going to praise his sister, as most brothers would (who actually like their sisters, at any rate). All those criticizing his positive remarks about his sister are making a heck of an assumption that he actually closely follows her legal career. I know very little about the details of my brothers’ jobs. I don’t know why Trump, who is not a lawyer, would be particularly familiar with her record on the bench—a record which by the way includes various conservative positions too (esp. on illegal immigrants), as does some of her speeches.

What he would know is that Reagan appointed her to the federal district court, and Clinton promoted her to the prestigious appellate court. I’m sure he is proud of that accomplishment.

Trump provides plenty of proof that his synchophants can’t ignore, so they divert, deflect, and attack. Trump’s campaign of slander and pander only appeals to the LIEberals and easily duped.

How about you show me that Trump has supported any conservative candidate or cause prior to running for president.

The fact is he stated this past December that he did not like what Justice Scalia stated against affirmative action. That demonstrated the type he would appoint. Last night at the debate he went the full Cindy Sheehan claiming Iraq was based on a lie and defended his pro-abortion position.

Trump believes that assault weapons should be banned, “who needs them except criminals and police?”

Trump says he wants a longer waiting period for hand guns, rifles and shotguns. We should be able to tell within 72 hours if a person has a record or mental issues that would prohibit ownership.

Trump didn’t have to be asked a question. The subject came up and he had a couple of names ready. I guess Cruz and the ready didn’t.

I'm sorry but you did not provide any proof that Trump currently supports abortion, which was the topic being discussed (praising his sister, like any decent brother would do, is not the same thing as supporting abortion, obviously). I take this as proof that you, as I knew, have no proof that Trump currently supports abortion, so you know when you accuse him of that you are engaging in pure speculation.

The fact is he stated this past December that he did not like what Justice Scalia stated against affirmative action.

He did not. He said he thought what Scalia said about some blacks being better off at lesser universities was hard on the black community. That is not the same thing as "affirmative action" in general; this was a much more specific criticism of one question Scalia asked in oral arguments. And by the way, Trump just named Scalia and Thomas a few days ago, when Sean Hannity asked him to name two justices representative of the ones he'd like to appoint.

defended his pro-abortion position.

That is a straight-up lie. The only time he mentioned abortion was in saying he didn't support funding Planned Parenthood's abortions. He also, of course, called Cruz a liar for what he said about abortion and other things.

Trump believes that assault weapons should be banned, “who needs them except criminals and police? Trump says he wants a longer waiting period for hand guns, rifles and shotguns.

Except that what you claim goes directly against his frequent statements about the 2nd Amendment and his policy paper on his website on the subject. He hasn't advocated what you claim since 2000.

How about you show me that Trump has supported any conservative candidate or cause prior to running for president.

Let me help educate you about Trump's past positions that he promoted actively and often enthusiastically and repeatedly [with sources in brackets]. Already by the 1980s he was talking about remedying the trade imbalance and high national debt [full-page ad in NY Times; several interviews, inc. one with Oprah], cracking down on crime, being loudly pro-police and pro-death penalty [another full-page ad in the NY Times; later a full chapter in his book, The America We Deserve], for fighting government wastefulness and ineptitude, and for less regulations on business [The Art of the Deal, esp. Wollman rink story; later revisited in depth in The America We Deserve including a call for lower taxes and a new word, "burons" (a combination of "bureaucrat" and "moron")].

By 2000, he was also for cracking down hard on terrorism (which he saw as a big growing threat) and calling out the damage that teachers unions and federal centralization were doing to the education system [some of the main focuses in The America We Deserve]. Already in 2000 too, he was talking about the dangers of an open border and he said he was for a ban on partial birth abortion (he changed his mind immediately after the Russert interview Cruz is touting) [once more, The America We Deserve]. By 2011, he was calling for a border wall and deportation of criminals, the repeal of Obamacare, and was for strengthening the military, but using it more judiciously [his book, Time to Get Tough]. In 2013, he said the amnesty bill was a "monstrosity" and would be the death of the Republican Party [multiple tweets and his CPAC speech].

Trump helped fundraise for Reagan [as Roger Stone recently reminded viewers on Megyn Kelly's show--he actually worked with Trump in raising money for Reagan]. He was Bush's guest at the 1988 Republican convention [Larry King and Chris Wallace interviews with Trump from the convention that are up on YouTube]. A recent biographer of Bush's even notes that Bush briefly considered then dismissed the idea of Trump as his VP in 1988 [Jon Meacham's bio of Bush; Trump's interview on Meet the Press]. Trump was giving speeches at Tea Party events by 2011 [there's even a photo of him at one in his book, Time to Get Tough; you can google others].

It could have tremendously damaged Trump’s candidacy if he refused to discuss the topic the moderator asked him about. You know as well as I do that all the news following the debate would have been: “Trump showed utter inability to even briefly discuss Supreme Court appointments.” Within a day or two Cruz would have had an ad with a clip from the debate saying that Trump had proved to be utterly intellectually incapable of dealing with judicial appointments, so it would be a disaster to elect him. The presidential debate was precisely the time and place for this discussion. It seems to me, you are simply taking a cheap shot at Trump.

Anything short of prosecution of Planned Parenthood and shutting them down reinforces his long-held beliefs on abortion. Keep sipping the Kool-Aid on the propaganda his campaign is pushing.

Yea, its clear where Trump stands on gun control. In reference to so-called assault weapons, he was quoted: “who needs them except criminals and police?” At the time, he called for a longer waiting period for hand guns, rifles and shotguns.

In 2000, Trump criticized Republicans for “walk[ing] the NRA line and refus[ing] even limited restrictions” on guns. In the same year, he also said he supported banning assault weapons and expanding background checks. “I generally oppose gun control, but I support the ban on assault weapons and I support a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun,” he said at the time. “With today’s Internet technology we should be able to tell within 72-hours if a potential gun owner has a record.”

Trumps also believes if government can tag American citizens on the “no-fly” list, they should lose their second amendment rights:

Trump only now panders to the pro-gun voter by calling for ending gun-free zones. The fact remains most of Trump’s properties remain “gun-free” zones.

You left out other quotes from that same 2000 book by Trump: “Democrats want to confiscate all guns, which is a dumb idea because only the law-abiding citizens would turn in their guns and the bad guys would be the only ones left armed” and “I generally oppose gun control.” Trump has also said more recently that his two oldest sons’ involvement in the NRA has moved him more to the right in this issue.

From the moment he announced, I've pretty much been on board with DJT.

But honestly, his veneer seems to be sustaining self-inflicted damage ....and I'm retreating to the *fence*. We'll see.

You are in the tank for him, I can respect that. Heck, anyone who has a star on the Walk of Fame, can't be all bad. ;D

I have an alibi

Trump and his choice Sykes gets it; the “keep” = individual ownership, and the “bear” = being able to practice.

Notice that Cruz filed the amicus brief for the Heller decision:

https://www.tedcruz.org/wp-content/uploads/pdf/Heller_Amicus_Brief.pdf

Cruz should be on the Supreme Court.

Trump should pick him and Sykes; leave Pryor set where he is for awhile...
