Statement from (Iowa) Secretary of State Paul Pate Regarding Misleading Mailer from Cruz
Oskaloosa News ^

Posted on 01/30/2016 1:07:24 PM PST by springwater13

Today I was shown a piece of literature from the Cruz for President campaign that misrepresents the role of my office, and worse, misrepresents Iowa election law. Accusing citizens of Iowa of a "voting violation" based on Iowa Caucus participation, or lack thereof, is false representation of an official act. There is no such thing as an election violation related to frequency of voting. Any insinuation or statement to the contrary is wrong and I believe it is not in keeping in the spirit of the Iowa Caucuses.

Additionally, the Iowa Secretary of State’s Office never "grades" voters. Nor does the Secretary of State maintain records related to Iowa Caucus participation. Caucuses are organized and directed by the state political parties, not the Secretary of State, nor local elections officials. Also, the Iowa Secretary of State does not "distribute" voter records. They are available for purchase for political purposes only, under Iowa Code." - Paul D. Pate, Iowa Secretary of State

“Very sad. I feel bad for Cruz. I wonder if he was personally behind this fiasco.”

Indeed. I’m now almost 100% disillusioned with Cruz. Another FReeper here expressed it well: “I like the IDEA of Ted better than the REALITY of Ted.”

The problem is if he knew about it, then his judgement is bad; if he didn’t know about it, then he is unable to manage his own campaign, which throws doubt on his ability to manage the United States government.

Is Accusing citizens of Iowa of a “voting violation” based on Iowa Caucus participation, a Christian value?

Or give unto Caesar what is Caesar’s?

Makes me wonder if this intimidation and lies are an earmark of what would Jesus do?

I saw the photo of the outside of that document.

IMO, it looked too much like official business.

This was a universally seen bad move on Ted’s part.

What the ramifications will be, I cannot say.

It can’t be good.

This is the sort of thing that can start a firestorm of negativity and cost you 20% of the vote in mere days.

Ted may have picked the exact moment to do the worst damage to his campaign, and most likely far worse than Trump has done to it since the campaigns began.

I want Ted judged on his record and capabilities. They don’t attract my vote, but that’s what I base my vote on.

This move on his part was very unfortunate, because it will overshadow his record and capabilities.

Rumor has it that Cruz is still unaware of the mailing.

If true, that's really damn'ing. This is NOT the kind of thing a campaign keeps from the Candidate. The longer this goes without Cruz issuing a statement or holding a press conference to condemn the mailing (and whoever on his campaign --- if his campaign did this at all...) the worse it gets for Cruz.

The weekend is ticking away .........

Whoever's working on his mail operation just pulled it out of a standard playbook

So Cruz is basically nothing new then. He's just like all the rest, standard playbook, no original thought. I see.

That about sums it up.

McConnell’s mailing doesn’t accuse citizens of being in violation of voting laws for not voting.

Wow

“Cruz spokesman Rick Tyler confirmed to IJ Review that the mailer was theirs in a phone call Friday evening, saying that the targeting had been “very narrow, but the caucuses are important and we want people who haven’t voted before to vote.”

Could it be the problem was the “VOTING VIOLATION” mailer?

Was that, too, copied from past “successful” uses?

That, to me, WOULD look like something serious and it is as badly misleading as those flyers that say that you are one of three people, one of which wins the Powerball.

We had to be careful if the candidates name was on a flyer since he had to sign it if it was and on the door. ]

To think this went out w/o his knowledge is a stretch. This one is controversial and he had to be aware as well as being coordinated with the state elections office to get the names/votes.

He better had known.

First there was the Glenn Beck dirty trick with the photoshopped Tweet, in violation of Federal Election Law (in an election you can’t send out a communication PRETENDING that it came from a candidate or campaign that it did NOT come from). Now THIS illegal act. Sheesh. “Consistentconservatives” my ass!

I do not know. Placing Voter Violation on mailer may not be smart, but not illegal.

Is Accusing citizens of Iowa of a “voting violation” based on Iowa Caucus participation, a Christian Texas value?

Fair's fair, after all the "New York Values" posts ......

Could he be a nut to the good in this particular situation, though?

Color me more optimistic than some, but I think he could be.

Methinks when Glenn Beck came in he brought some Romney staffers...

someone is giving Cruz terrible advice..

maybe Romney is planning a convention surprise..

he wont get it but maybe he thought Cruz was the only one he needed to take out..

https://lawyerscommittee.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/DeceptivePracticesReportJuly2012FINALpdf.pdf

“The right to vote should be unimpeded by deception and intimidation.
Yet, the freedom to exercise this right is compromised when voters encounter trickery, fraud, or intimidation before and during the voting process. Deceptive election practices occur when individuals, political operatives, and organizations intentionally disseminate misleading or false election information that prevents voters from participating in elections.”

Above is a sample of what to expect from Li’l Debbie Mayo-head. The `rats have (and will) screw Cruz over NBC; next the party of Walking Dead voters will have a field day with this mailer.
Yeah, 1,) it’s a caucus vote, and 2.) they are trying to get people to vote, but you know some are licking their chops.
Cruz has got to get out front on this, disavow, fire and ... un-schlong himself from this mess his people created.

While I don't like the tactic, it is not something new. Both Democrats and Republicans, liberal and conservative groups alike have used these types of letters in past elections. You owe JediJones an apology for calling him a liar.

The wording of that is VERY different from one with a giant VOTING VIOLATION at the top with no explanation and giving you an “F” as a voting grade. This is a letter that explains itself quite clearly. I still think it’s bad form to rat out neighbor’s voting records.
