National Review was created by the great William F. Buckley, Jr., the brilliant pioneer of the modern conservative movement. Throughout the current presidential campaign season, NR has been a consistent critic of Donald Trump, whose conservatism it views with, to say the least, skepticism. And so it was entirely consistent for NR to publish "Against Trump," a special edition appearing today that assembles essays by an array of leading conservatives, including our own L. Brent Bozell.
That said, "Against Trump" came in for a barrage of criticism on today's Morning Joe. John Heilemann called it an "in-kind contribution" to Trump, by depicting him in precisely the way he prefers: as pitted against the Establishment. And Nicolle Wallace said it was a "stupid move and a stupid piece" that risks splitting the conservative media from the conservative base.

On Morning Joe, John Heilemann and Nicolle Wallace rip National Review’s “Against Trump” special edition, saying it actually helps Trump, is desperate and stupid.
Ping to Liberal Media Criticism list.
I’m actually tired of this “founded by, in the vein of William F. Buckley, Jr., blah, blah, blah” horsecrap.
There’s absolutely no connection with him, frankly. “The man’s Dead Jim!”
It is an organ of preference and political exigency based on the power structure status quo. NR is irrelevant in my world sphere.
Excellent piece!

It does help Trump. Trump will probably turn it around as proof establishment GOP has surrogates doing their dirty work.
Plus Trump can say,,”Only 22? That’s all you could find, 22 journo/policy advisors/trough feeders is the best you could do?”
Seriously, the whole stunt is just dumb.
For once, and probably the ONLY TIME, I have to agree with Nicole Wallace.
Backfire. 10 points!
What a ridiculous joke. How far this rag has sunk since Bill Buckley made it great. Rich Lowry is a complete laughingstock. This will only HELP Trump.
“This will only HELP Trump.”
That was precisely Heilemann’s argument.
There’s nothing ‘Excellent’ about it.
here have these guys been the last 6 years with Republican control of Congress and their so-called “conservative” agenda??????
National Review is disappointingly Establishmentarian since Bill Buckley's death but, on its worst day, its institutional wisdom is infinitely beyond MSNBC and Bloomberg. National Review CREATED the modern conservative movement sixty years ago and is a lot more invested than The Donald come lately and his sycophants.
I will only listen to people the UK tries to ban. Everybody else better step up their game!
Amazing isn’t it?
They have become what they say they hate the most.
They are the ones who have resorted to this type of tactics.
At least if Trump attacks, he does it to their face.
He doesn’t have a hit squad.
Where was the “Against McCain” “manifesto” in January 2008? McCain WAS a radical progressive. This is just the frantic spasms of the GOPe marionettes, as K Street FREAKS out about Trump.
You make an excellent point. Where was the “conservative” criticism of Boehner, McConnell, Cantor and many, many more pretend conservatives? I haven’t looked at National Review in a long, long time and, as one person mentioned above, Bill Buckley is long gone.
From the gang that brought us: Romney, McLame, Boehner, Ryan, McConniver, and a host of others, we now get this? Sorry guys, you ship sailed long ago. No one lifted a finger to tell Bush you need to defend yourself and your policies, even the dumb ones like your immigration stance. Right now they are probably praying that Hitlery gets the boot so the dems are left with finding a candidate they can support against Trump, or Cruz. One might ask each of these guys: how did you feel about shutting down the government when Cruz supported doing so over major policy differences? The answer is NONE OF THEM.
It sure looks like this is going to backfire. Stuck on stupid.
Invested in what? These people get paid to write- and to talk on TV. What have they ever accomplished? What have they ever done? I saw Dana Loesch on with Megyn Kelly - Dana admirably worked on TEA starting in 2010 but to pretend she has 60 years outside holding a sign in two degree weather working for Pete DuPont or Alan Keyes is a joke. Her TEA adventure is a now paid gig on Fox.
Yes, it was excellent. I found this especially cogent:
“For someone who wants to project strength, he has an astonishing weakness for flattery, falling for Vladimir Putin after a few coquettish bats of the eyelashes from the Russian thug. All in all, Trump knows approximately as much about national security as he does about the nuclear triad â which is to say, almost nothing.”
An astonishing weakness for flattery-—I think that’s what the GOP establishment has figured out. A few empty compliments, some candy and flowers and President Trump will be eating out of your hand.
I note they make a comparison with Huey Long by noting that he was an opportunist. In that vein they note that Huey drove FDR to become more liberal. Are they kidding me or what. Huey was an opportunist for sure, in that he noted the ball game being played by the uniparty in La post WW I. He managed to get the people to vote for him and oust the crooks and influence peddlers, mostly for the state utility, out of Baton Rouge (he replaced them with his crooks). FDR was only afraid of him politically because he was a bigger populist then he (perhaps Eleanor) was. In any event, I’d rather have my populist in the white house than some continuation of the uniparty we have there now.
IMO, these jerks would have been wise to back Trump (or Cruz) both of whom they detest over the Dems. If they manage with their BS in splitting their “party” they are the ones who will be getting no party favors and worse with a Dem or another RINO in the white house, conservatives are going to lose and the Country can mail it in.
