Speaking at a town hall meeting in Baton Rouge, La., last week, President Barack Obama told the audience that when Ronald Reagan was governor of California the smog sometimes got so bad that "people just wouldn't go outside."
"And if you had asthma or some respiratory disease, you might die," said Obama.
"I remember as recently as 1979, when I first started college--I started college in Los Angeles--when I went running, the first week I was there, after about five minutes I'd start feeling a burning in my chest," said the president. "And it was just me sucking in soot and smog." ...

Obama was born with 2 ani and no mouth....
Good grief he lived in L.A. too? Who paid for all his moves all of his life? I can’t even move across town much less around the country & world...
Obama is an idiot. The smog was worse with LBJ, a big Democrat President.
“And when I was elected president, Long Island was underwater.”
Exactly. How can Obama get this so wrong?
It was that bad in the 60’s and early 70’s at times. It could become painful to breathe, and I’m a healthy person. I see the invention of the catalytic converter as a huge achievement. By 1975 all new cars had them, so by 1979 horrible smog was more a myth than reality. I’m sure 0 heard about how bad it was (part of evil capitalism, don’t you know), but I doubt he actually lived it. The inventor of the catalytic converter should get his name put alongside other engineers on the Eiffel Tower (he was French).
In ‘66 and in ‘68 the LA smog was a yellow pall. It was hard to see three blocks downtown. And yes I think Reagan was governor then.
But things like smog are bigger than one governor or one decade, sort of like presidents and gas prices.
One part of the Obama legacy is that the issue of past drug use is no longer a media concern in politics.
And during Democratic CA Governor Pat Brown, the air was worse by a series of magnitudes compared to Reagan’s time.
when I went running
and he never got shot ?
Couldn't possibly be from all that Pot and Cigarettes you were smoking now could it?
Wouldn't have been an Eiffel Tower without Otis Brothers & Company to design the lifts to the second level. Originally they were rejected because they didn't want foreign companies to work on the tower, but none of the French companies were able to come up with a good design for the lifts.
“Good grief he lived in L.A. too?”
Occidental College is in LA.
Umm... did he even have a point in saying this?
I think everyone knows the smog levels were much higher before the catalytic converters where mandated in cars to reduce visible pollution.
Is he trying to take credit for that?
The central point of half of the threads on FR is that Obama is a fruitcake. The reason for that is that Obama is a fruitcake.
That burning in Homobama’s chest was either too fast a draw on a doobie, or to long a line of blow.
I hope not. Fruitcake is forever.
You are right about the smog.
In Burbank where my folks’ friends lived, it was so bad your eyes would burn.
Luckily my folks lived in one of the beach cities.
Well, yeah.
I had to do some work in Pamona thought I was gunna’ die.
