Quarter of Republicans think Cruz's birthplace disqualifies him for president: poll

A quarter of Republicans think White House hopeful Ted Cruz is disqualified to serve as U.S. president because he was born in Canada to an American mother, a new Reuters/Ipsos poll found.

Republican voters nearly mirror independents and the broader electorate in their belief that Cruz cannot hold the White House, with 27 percent of all voters and 28 percent of independents responding he should be disqualified.

Cruz, a U.S. Senator from Texas who was born to a U.S. citizen mother and Cuban father in Calgary, Alberta, has brushed aside the attacks about his eligibility as pure politics. But the questions could hamper his ability to rally the broad Republican support he would need to win the party's nomination to run for the presidency in November's election.

Only 47 percent of all voters surveyed responded that they thought Cruz is qualified to be president with regard to his citizenship, with 26 percent saying they were not sure.

The poll was taken from Jan. 7 to Jan. 14, before questions about Cruz's eligibility became one of the most heated moments of Thursday night's Republican primary debate.

Is there any solid consensus among conservative Constitutional experts as to whether Cruz is qualified or disqualified based on his birthplace?

The ‘G’ OP has found a way to sabotage us. Cruz gets sympathy now, and after the primary, they have a contingency plan to pull the rug out from under him. In the meantime, Trump and Cruz supporters slug it out viciously. While Majority Leader Mc-Conman laughs.

‘25% is a big chunk of the voter pool.’

That is chump-change compared to Phase Two.

After the primary, that would be a BIPARTIZAN majority.

I don’t think this is at all fair to Cruz, but until he challenges Professor Laurence Tribe to a debate, Trump and Cruz supporters are locked in a cage fight of the ‘G’ OP’s making.

I think you are right, 1984 was a blowout. So was 1980.

Historical U.S. Presidential Elections 1789-2012

Maybe Cruz should double down, others point out that attacking NY helps him elsewhere.

100% of your party should think you are eligible to run. Whether you support the candidate is another issue but Ted has some big problems here.

I won’t say it is easy, but all Cruz has to do is convince the doubters that he is NBC. It doesn’t have to be true in fact, just convincing. Like magic without a need to suspend disbelief.

I think the plan is for Trump, once he wins the nomination, to ask for a declarative judgment or Congressional resolution settling Cruz’s birther issue...and then put Cruz on the ticket as Veep.

I was a Cruz supporter when he first announced. But last night he showed his true colors. He’s a snake. He’s finished.

Yeah, right. I suppose you also trudged through snowdrifts as you walked precincts for Barry Goldwater in the 1964 New Hampshire primary.

Not necessarily. Simply believing that Cruz is ineligible for the Presidency doesn’t mean that they still won’t vote for him. The right way to figure that out is to ask a followup to that 25% asking whether they’d still vote for Cruz as the nominee.

And then there are positions candidates hold that are unconstitutional. If a candidate holds enough of those positions then a voter may decided that they are "ineligible" to hold the office and not vote for them.

For example a candidate like Trump who is for affirmative action, Kelo, universal health care, government bailouts and stimulus packages, all that unconstitutional nonsense.

Robt Mercer, his $ sugar daddy, is a huge open borders supporter

This is one of many things on your list that is wrong, but I'm going to ask you to document your claim to see where you get your information from.

There’s no consensus, so big names have come down on different sides of the question. There’s no Supreme Court decision directly on point, so it’s left for conjecture.

It looks like he DOES have a cloud over his head as far as the electorate believes.

Joined his BFF, Glen Beck, in passing out Teddy Bears to ILLEGAL ALIEN INVADERS which incentivizes the ILLEGAL behaviour

Low information nonsense.

Cruz came back from the border and fought against Obama's amnesty and for deporting the Dreamers.

Meanwhile Trump met with the Dreamers at Trump Tower and they claim Trump said that they (the Dreamers) convinced him.

Do I need to post you the picture?

""75% of Republicans think White House hopeful Ted Cruz is qualified to serve as U.S. president..."

The actual number according to the poll is 47%, not 75%.

26% are not sure.
