Let Us Not Be Consumed By the Mob (Author decries voter revolt against GOP-E)
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review ^ | Saturday, January 2, 2016 | Salena Zito

Every political movement has a tipping point. It goes too far, or it loses its original purpose -- or it becomes so self-enamored, under the influence of anger and mob rule, that ugliness shades all the good of its original intent.

Such is true of the populism that peaked this summer in America.

Years of incompetency and a tin ear at the White House, along with a Republican-controlled Congress accused of not accomplishing much, drove people to figuratively or literally shout, "Enough is enough!"

Never mind that many of the loudest shouters likely did not vote in 2008 or 2012 against Barack Obama. Or apparently they do not understand that, despite Republicans holding a sizeable House majority and a slim Senate majority, institutional voting rules often prevent those majorities from enacting sweeping changes.

With Donald Trump's emergence, and with a chorus of talk-radio hosts suddenly behind him, the mob-rule crowd deems everyone who was ever elected to office (with the exception of Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas) to be a Republican-in-name-only or part of a dark establishment cult intent on crushing the souls of average white voters.

Never mind that this same GOP "cult" helped recruit candidates from a range of ethnic and racial backgrounds to run and win more than 900 additional state legislative seats, 70 additional congressional seats and more than a dozen additional governors races -- many of them in districts and states that Republicans once had no hope of competing for, let alone winning.

The mob-rule crowd gnaws on any piece of political red meat thrown out as truth, never checking to see what kind of flesh it just consumed. None of this represents true conservatism. All of it is pure populism, and it is radically contaminating conservatism's values.

If my desire for honest representation in my government, and fidelity to the founding principles makes me a populist then so be it. Hell, factor in my antipathy for ideologue judges and media cockroaches and I might even pass for a rabid dog.

There are a lot of us and more each day as this bs oozes out from the lying mouth pieces for the GOPe!

We are no long interested in electing more lying, cringing, sold-out, PC, DC insider GOP establishment scum who continuously stabs we American workers in the back.

We elected the GOP to majorities in both houses of Congress and they’ve done NOTHING to stop a single iota of Obama’s kommie, U.S.A-destroying agenda. Instead, all they’ve done is make excuses, pretended they were powerless when they were simply too frightened to wield their power and conducted kabuki theater which they thought was fooling us.

Well, guess what? We weren’t fooled and we’re not going to let it happen again. No more gutless wonders who are mere quivering sacks of jello, petrified that they won’t be re-elected and thereby lose access to all of those free caviar and campaign DC parties, royalty-like treatment during all of those free foreign “fact-finding” missions, and all of those free invitations to billionaires’ stadium box seats at major sporting events.

“We’re going down a road we can’t see to where it leads and we might regret where we would wind up.”

Doubt it. But I do know Bush did that too me, as did his dad, as did McCain, as did Romney, as did Huckabee, as did Santorum, as did Perry, etc etc etc.....

Trump cant be worse than Obama or any republican I can think of. Besides, I like how he wins already. 3 hour debate, he says no and its two.

The Trump/Jackson comparison has some truth to it, which is exactly why I can't vote for Trump despite being angry at how moderates have emasculated the party of Reagan. And it has nothing to do with supporters not dressing in finery. Rather, I think he probably shares Jackson's lack of respect for the Constitution. He's the proverbial Man on Horseback, and given his history, I have zero confidence he'll end up leading in the direction of a more limited federal government.

I find it incredibly depressing that in such a critical election season, and with such a vulnerable opponent, we couldn't put forth a single candidate fit to tie Reagan's shoes.

When the NSA is spying on Congress, it’s time to go rogue.

When the Supreme Court is blackmailed into deciding cases, it’s time to say, “Let them enforce it.”

We need Trump to shred the Constitution because it’s already been shredded.

We need to purge the Republic to save it at this point. It’s either that or Civil War 2.

Salena is right and if Tony Snow was with us he would again stand up for her. FR has often bordered on reenacting the French revolution....

I'm not quite ready to shred what's left of the Constitution, especially when the guy doing the shredding seems like a big government type. I think Pete Townsend wrote about that once....

Unlike the author of the original piece, I've got no problem with taking some radical steps. But I want my radical to be a small government conservative, and I have absolutely zero faith in Trump being one of those.

Still, I really don't blame anyone for supporting him. One of the great ironies of this campaign is that for all Jeb Bush's hatred of Trump, he's too blind to see that it is the Jeb Bushes of the GOP that created Trump.

I can't stand Trump but she's wrong. The party leadership has spent the last decade looking down their noses at the unwashed angry about immigration, ignoring them, and "wink-wink, nudge-nudging" with Democrats that they'd keep us under control.

They not only stopped listening, but stopped effectively communicating to us as well. Now, they blame Trump supporters for not understanding things they did a really crappy job of explaining. And they seemed to value comity within Congress over fighting battles of principle. Even if you lose, there is value in fighting. But in most cases, McConnell and Boehner decided that if they couldn't get a law passed and signed, why bother? Fools.

Now, those same elites are compounding their tone-deafness by attacking Trump harshly, and by extension, the 30-35% who support him. That's a real genius move. Let's insult a large voting block that is essential to winning the election.

I have listened to your argument (also made by others) and I somewhat agree however If Trump is not a viable candidate for the long haul as many of us have concluded and the base is going to shove him down our throats, what good does that do? FR (and I have been round a while) is far from a microcosm of the entire Republican electorate. I would say this good place is as close to the extreme as you can get without going completely off the cliff.

If the hated “moderates” (who are still out there) push Trump to the curb
then what? ....full scale revolt? or enough pliability to maneuver the rapids?

I think we are looking at revolt ...although I will argue for anything that gets us a win.
If Im wrong about Trump then Im wrong about Trump ...but I don’t see him as the white knight.

Reagan may have fought his battles to get his ideas accepted but he also came up through the ranks and did his best not to alienate others.
His embrace of Bush was politically brilliant.

Trump has none of that going for him.

Yep, I've heard her there myself, along with that Mary Kissel from the Wall Street Urinal editorial board.

They really have no idea as to how they sound to average citizens. It's the classic bubble or ivory tower type mentality. The do not really recognize America as a distinct entity and are voluntary expatriate members of the global community. Nationalism or patriotism or anything Pro-American is as offensive a concept to them as it was to the Communists.

Her lede defies her column. It applies to the GOPe first, and has applied to the GOPe for a long time now.
