They really have no idea as to how they sound to average citizens. It's the classic bubble or ivory tower type mentality. The do not really recognize America as a distinct entity and are voluntary expatriate members of the global community. Nationalism or patriotism or anything Pro-American is as offensive a concept to them as it was to the Communists.
