On Private Fundraiser Recording Ted Cruz Says "Gravity" Will Undo Trump and Carson
Slate ^ | December 10, 2015 | Elliot Hannon

"....Ted Cruz's remarks, which the Times published a five-minute clip of on Thursday, were nowhere near as campaign-shattering as Romney's. The clip did, however, provide some insight into Cruz's thinking about the race and, notably, Donald Trump. The Texas senator has been noticeably reluctant to criticize his flame-throwing rival in the hopes of picking up his supporters when the flames ultimately engulf Trump's campaign. If that was his implied campaign strategy, Cruz says it explicitly to the crowd gathered at a Madison Avenue office.

Here's some of what Cruz had to say about Trump and Carson (via the Times):

>>>I like and respect both Donald and Ben. I do not believe either one is going to be our nominee. I don't believe either one is going to be our president. I think both of them, their campaigns have a natural arc. And with both of them I think gravity is pulling them down... Carson is further in that descent. You look at Paris, you look at San Bernardino, it's given a seriousness to this race, that people are looking for: Who is prepared to be a commander in chief? Who understands the threats we face? Who am I comfortable having their finger on the button? Now that's a question of strength, but it's also a question of judgment. And I think that is a question that is a challenging question for both of them. So my approach, much to the frustration of the media has been to bear hug both of them, and smother them with love. People run as who they are. I believe gravity will bring both of those campaigns down, I think the lion's share of their supporters come to us.<<<

Cruz didn't say anything wrong at all.

He was in a room full of people donating money to his campaign. They went to his fundraiser to hear him tell them how he is going to win, and why they should continue to support him with their donations.

They didn't pay money to hear him sing the praises of Trump, or Carson, or say he didn't have any idea how he could win the race.

Sheeesh..This whole thing is over nothing.( He made no Romney 47% comment.)

He talked about his strategy to win, and why he is the better candidate. I donate my hard earned money to his campaign, whenever I can. I want him to have a plan to win. I want him to win. (He is as close to Ronald Reagan as we are ever going to get in a presidential candidate.)

I have absolutely no problem with what Cruz said, or how he said it, or where. However, it would be most interesting to know which campaign paid for the spies to attend the fundraiser.

The desperation to make this into a controversy makes me think it's GOPe -most likely Jeb's people , but it could be one of the others too.

Maybe we'll find out soon.

Cruz answers the way he always answers. He didn’t deny saying it and he said the exact same thing to kelly that he said on the leaked audio. He’ll win because of his record. There was no squirming, no faltering.

Leftists are trying to have Cruz and Trump fight.

Ignore slate which is probably the most irrelevant string of bits on the Internet.

Not just the leftists. There are plenty here who are busy tearing the other guy down. I'd gladly vote for Cruz or Trump any day. We've been incredibly fortunate to have derailed the GOPe's coronation of jebtard! The best hope the establishment has is Rubio, and if you compare his conservative rankings with the other candidates, he's actually pretty good, except on immigration. If it came down to hildly or col. sanders vs li'l ruby, I'd hold my nose and vote the little creep in. But hopefully it will be Cruz or Trump.

_____________

I happily do not care who is nominated as long as it is not GOPe. So Rubio is another puppet in my book.

"Worse than that...he contorted himself into a pretzel, squirmed, and weasel, worded his sorry reply."

That is SOP for Cruz. He's a worm, Trump at least speaks his mind and takes ownership of his words.

Because what Cruz said was in private and not intended to be “out there” at the moment. Someone at his meeting was a lil’ snake in the grass who was out to make his bear hugs a thing of the past by recording him.

Dems or GOPe behind it. Most likely the latter.

More likely a Trump supporter.

Trump tweet:

.@tedcruz should not make statements behind closed doors to his bosses, he should bring them out into the open - more fun that way!

I agree. There’s no ‘there’ there.

How can anybody fault Cruz for wanting to win?

But he is severely delusional.

What was that you said last night about haunting Trump threads?

Hypocrite much?

Did anybody hear Cruz actually trash Trump and Carson here? He seemed very gentlemanly, as usual. And what was he supposed to tell his donors privately, that he’s going to lose? And who secretly recorded the meeting and then email the audio over to the New York Slimes for use in this attack piece?

Agree. I think both Carson and Trump are contributing enormously to this country and to the conservative movement. I like them both for different reasons and I’d vote for either one if he got the Republican nomination. (I would NOT vote for Bush or Christie.) But I think Cruz is a better choice for President.

I hope that all of the real conservative candidates will work hard for whoever gets the nomination and that there will be a role for them in the next administration and/or a continuing role in the conservative movement - wherever they are most needed.
