Ted Cruz on Sunday refused to address how he would handle the millions of undocumented immigrants already living in the country, despite hammering Marco Rubio this weekend for previously supporting a path to citizenship. Cruz refused to take off the table his own support of a potential path to legal status despite his cries against "amnesty."
"Let's demonstrate we can stop illegal immigration, we can protect our national security interests, we can protect our law enforcement interests," Cruz said after a campaign stop in Newton, Iowa. "Then once that's done, we can have a conversation at that point about whatever people remain here illegally."
Cruz has insisted the border must be secured before addressing proposals of how to deal with the millions of undocumented immigrants still living in the United States.

Then why isn’t he clear on it now?
He has been oddly silent for months on immigration, legal and illegal. And now he is less than clear on what he’d do with the illegals here, instead being condescending about how we do want to talk about that yet. When it is all we want to know, before picking a candidate! I have been frustrated with him for months and just switched to a candidate that wasn’t vague.
The eventual approach will be step-by-step. First, build the wall, secure the border. Pause and talk about what comes next. Perform the next step, say it's encouragement of self-deportation, then pause and talk about what comes next. If the next step is forcible deportation, then do that...pause and talk about what comes next. Because even after forcible deportation, there will still be a million or two or more illegals left. And, in the end, we're going to have to deal with that residue.
Cruz has always contended that there will be no citizenship, under any circumstances. He has never backed off that promise.
And he has recently made an issue of the economic impact illegals have had -- taking jobs from and reducing wages for Americans (usually poorer Americans). It follows that you can't reduce that impact by leaving them in place. So, I'm confident that he intends to employ policies that encourage self-deportation (e.g., enforcement of workplace laws, denial of benefits, etc.) to remove the bulk of the illegals.
Then, we'll see what's left...and figure out what to do next.
Instead of being "oddly silent", Cruz also recently published his own immigration plan. I'd urge you to read it. There are similarities to Trump's plan...and differences, too. For one thing, there is no nonsense about, after completing deportations, wanting to welcome "the good ones" back.
In my estimation, Cruz is being realistic. The first thing that needs to be done -- and almost all sane people can agree -- is to secure the border. All right, dammit, let's get that done!
Then we'll worry about Step 2.
A reading of his immigration plan and understanding the premise behind his making the illegals an economic issue convince me that Cruz is serious as a heart attack about moving the illegals out.
He just doesn't want to put the cart before the horse. Securing the border is job one.
Trump is good at messing with enemies’ minds. A wall might say something more than what it supposedly can physically do.
Sounds quite McCainish.
Like you, I can only conclude (via common sense and logic) that Trump means what he says. He wants to be President so that he can “make America great again.”
Nothing else makes the slightest bit of sense, given that he’s got so very much to lose, and no guarantee of any gain.
The left is full of crazies who’d love to take him out. He’s also going up against the full might of the corrupt elites, who are well aware that he means to go to Washington and take a wrecking ball to their festering den of inequity. He’s intent on upsetting a Trillion Dollar apple cart. Men have been killed for merely threatening far less.
He’s an imperfect hero who’s come at the perfect time for America. Tens of millions of us sense that this is our very last opportunity to fix our country by working within the civil system laid down by the Framers. If we fail to get this man elected, all bets are off. Prepare for the absolute worst you can imagine.
how? I don’t mean platitudes or cheerleading stuff...I mean literally .how, logistically?
And also please answer my Kate Steinle question on deportation versus border. This should be good.
I’m going to trust that what you’re saying about Cruz’s position is true. The problem is, I think, that some of his words sound SO similar to the BS that we were being fed before by politicians, and now it sounds like he’s using the same words.
It may be because he’s spent a senatorial term in Washington and that’s just how they talk. I only spent one year in Brooklyn last year and I came back talking like them, even if I didn’t think like they did. So maybe he’s just unconsciously picking up phrases that he hears being used.
I think that Cruz, being the son of an immigrant, tends to be sympathetic to people who want to be in the United States in order to pursue the American dream. He knows what this country has given him and his father. And so he is nearly always in favor of something that would encourage people to come to the United States and achieve what Cruz Sr. did.
But what we’re worried about right now is the people who not only want to leech off of the people who want to succeed in the United States, but want to deny the American dream to the rest of us too. I think, from what I’ve seen, that Cruz is aware of that, but to ignore his pro-legal-immigration roots would be dishonest. At least that’s what it seems like to me.
Ultimately, if I may elaborate on what I think the BEST situation for border security would be, it would be that Trump is the clear winner, but with Cruz as a strong second. With a one-two combination like that, it will completely knock the establishment out of the running and make it so that they can’t try to force establishment compromises on the Trump campaign. Instead, Trump and Cruz will be able to team up without any costly delegate battles and go blazing into the rest of the campaign season.
It should give Trump 4-8 years to deconstruct the Washington establishment with bombast, the bully pulpit, and long, LONG coattails. He’s also an excellent way to espouse conservatism, or at least not-leftism to many people who have never heard it before. And then after that, with 4-8 years to polish his excellent act even more, and with that time to build a support network of his own too, Cruz would be able to take up the reins himself and help to finish reconstructing a Constitutionally limited government. By then, legal immigration won’t be a weakness, because if Trump is being truthful, the wall will also be built and laws will be enforced.
In the best case, of course. In my opinion. That doesn’t mean that other outcomes aren’t also good.
Provided, of course, that we don’t let them down.
‘Conversation’ is politics for hoodwinking Americans.
Deport and stop them from coming back in we are over...done...toast! No half measures...no cheap-labor-express bull - DEPORT all illegals.
Ted can get on board with deporting illegals or he is done imo.
Ted Cruz Won’t Rule Out Legalization for 11 Million in U.S. Illegally ... http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3366664/posts
But that stuff doesn’t apply to the 30 million illegals already here if he legalizes him—and he refuses to say he won’t do that, while previously having made statements that he will.
Repeatedly, when asked, he now refuses to say, though he has made pro-legalization comments in the past.
>> Of all the issues facing our beleaguered nation at this time, the issue of illegal immigration is the most important
It is an existential threat. Islamic terrorism not so much. Global weather not at all.
You wrote, “Cruz wants the illegals to stay.”
That is not true. You are either speaking out of ignorance or maliciousness. Ted Cruz has spelled out his plan on his site, and specifies that he is going to enforce immigration laws and rededicate “DHS to fully enforcing the law, including through deportations and returns.”
I challenge you to read his full statement on his site:

Yes, Cruz doesn’t use bombastic Trumpisms. Sorry. Cruz is a statesman, not a showman.
I still trust and admire Cruz. Even though we disagree, I still think Cruz has the best chance to challenge Trump for the GOP nomination. I have hope he can overcome Trump’s popularity between now and the elections.
Maybe just a Trump vs Cruz debate could happen. Then we will know whether we are betting on a winning candidate.
While I have great respect for Ted Cruz, I can’t agree with anything short of deportation of all illegal immigrants.
Me too. I canât agree with anything short of deportation of all illegal immigrants.
>>> Heâs also going up against the full might of the corrupt elites, who are well aware that he means to go to Washington and take a wrecking ball to their festering den of inequity [iniquity]. All of your posts on this thread are sobering and excellent, both of you.
Thank you.
“Itâs Tedâs refusal to stand with the wishes of most Americans (and our immigration laws) that has caused me to lose faith in him.
It would be all too easy for Ted to say, âThe law is the law - for everyone in this country.â He wouldnât have to do a thing, but say to all concerned, that illegals will be deported upon contact with state or federal law enforcement. That IS the lawful response to the discovery of any person whoâs in this country illegally.
The fact that he doesnât have the fortitude to speak those words, tells me that Tedâs already been compromised by the party, and/or deep pocket elites. If he somehow is elected president in this cycle, I wonât expect much of anything to change with regards to the illegal invasion.
You sadden me, Ted. I expected so much more from you.”
I agree with you 100%. Ted has had more than ample time to correct his H-!B error too. I no longer trust him, and THIS does sadden me. He is great on so many things(except the most important one)

It is INDEED a “TRILLION DOLLAR APPLE CART, and YES, men have been killed for far less.
You are the only FReeper to see why the GOPe, and the millionaire left is so intent on destroying Trump.
