Cruz refuses to take legal status off table

Ted Cruz on Sunday refused to address how he would handle the millions of undocumented immigrants already living in the country, despite hammering Marco Rubio this weekend for previously supporting a path to citizenship. Cruz refused to take off the table his own support of a potential path to legal status despite his cries against "amnesty."

"Let's demonstrate we can stop illegal immigration, we can protect our national security interests, we can protect our law enforcement interests," Cruz said after a campaign stop in Newton, Iowa. "Then once that's done, we can have a conversation at that point about whatever people remain here illegally."

Cruz has insisted the border must be secured before addressing proposals of how to deal with the millions of undocumented immigrants still living in the United States.

“People like BlackFemaleArmyCaptain are such Trump fanbois, though, that they trash Trump’s opponents without much thought. Expected.”

And some Cruz-bots ignore that Cruz is refusing to say what to do with illegals here. He could very well be giving them citizenship because he’s not saying he’s not!

Refusing to commit is a huge red flag.

The Club for Growth is getting payback.

Cruz who has said he would close the borders first and then deal lawfully with the resident illegals after the borders are secured, cannot be trusted because he will not give us specific details at this time. So the issue is really who do we trust the most, Trump or Cruz.

Of all the issues facing our beleaguered nation at this time, the issue of illegal immigration is the most important, because if we don't get this under control during the next presidential administration, the newly naturalized millions will ensure that Republicans never win another national election. It's all over but the crying, if we don't get it right this time.

Given the dire nature of this problem, it's incumbent upon every presidential candidate to speak as plainly to the issue as is humanly possible. We the people MUST know exactly where they stand, and exactly what they intend to do about the problem, if elected.

In that wise, Trump is unequivocal about what he intends to do. He doesn't parse words, or resort to lawyer-speak to answer questions about it. He says that he will build the fence, increase border patrols, enforce the laws on the books, take away the illegals' freebies, and deport those who are in the country illegally already. Those things are also in his published position paper.

They're the very things most Americans have been begging and pleading for, for over a decade.

Ted Cruz's plan looks great on paper, with the exception of the little noticed loophole of deporting "criminal" illegals. It bothers me that when queried about his stance in person, he resorts to the sort of slippery speech that we're all too familiar with from politicians, such as, we'll have a "conversation" about what to do with the tens of millions of illegals already in the country after the southern border is secured. There's just all kinds of room for reneging on his promises in such a statement.

“If you read his immigration policy, he says that those who have broken other laws and those on public assistance have to be deported first. With enforcement of our current laws, many will self deport. His law enforcement position is very clear in his immigration policy.”

No, it isn’t.

It’s ambiguous.

He could very well be for amnesty-any getting to stay equals amnesty. And after they get to stay- citizenship is the next logical step.

Okay, so here's what you're doing on these threads.

You need to go back to strawman setup 101. You flunked.

1: Attack every single candidate for not being good enough on illegal invaders,

Not true. I praise them for what I think will work and offer criticism for what I think will not. If you don't like that, then you can take them up point by point.

You know you can't. So you don't.

3: America is saved!

Pathetic.

What's your game here, man?

What it's been since 2001. Since then, I've written three books and lot of articles, all of which were well received here. So, what's your game here, man?

There's nothing ambiguous about it:

CRUZ PLAN TO STOP ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION HIGHLIGHTS

"It's not that we don't know how to solve illegal immigration. What is missing is the political will to get it done. And, as president, I will get it done. We will secure the borders." - Ted Cruz

SECURE THE BORDER

A Cruz Administration's first priority for immigration reform will be to secure the U.S.-Mexico border. We will: * Build a wall that works. The unsecured border with Mexico invites illegal immigrants, criminals, and terrorists to tread on American soil. I will complete the wall.

* Triple the number of Border Patrol agents. Securing the border is the federal government's obligation. I will dedicate the force necessary to do that.

* Increase vital aerial surveillance and other technology along the border. Adding boots on the ground is not enough. Eyes in the sky and other equipment are necessary to find and detain all illegal entrants.

Finish the biometric tracking system at our nation's ports of entry. It is disgraceful that our federal government cannot keep track of those who enter the country. I will complete a biometric RULE OF LAW

We need a President who will follow the law, hold those who break it accountable, and take seriously the duty to protect Americans. To restore the Rule of Law, a Cruz Administration will: * End President Obama's illegal amnesty. President Obama has issued over 20 illeg. I will restore our commitment to enforcement, public safety, and the Rule of Law by rededicating DHS to fully enforcing the law, including through deportations and returns.

* End sanctuary policies, sign Kate's Law, and deport criminal immigrants. There are about 340 sanctuary jurisdictions in the United States. They make a mockery of our laws and endanger our citizens. I will end support for these jurisdictions.

*Prohibit illegal immigrants from receiving financial benefits and strengthen E-Verify. American taxpayers should not be funding benefits for those who are here illegally, and American jobs should not go to those who are here illegally. I will protect Americans'al executive memoranda rewarding illegality. I will rescind each and every one on myfirst day in office.

* Increase deportations and end catch-and-release. Our laws are not being enforced

For several years, Cruz has unequivocally promised that he will never approve of citizenship for any illegal alien.

Yeah, he writes this, but then says - secure the border first, then there will be a “conversation.” That is what is troubling, or what part of that don’t you understand?

Why should I try to fight with you on specifics? I can actually read the thread above and I know your responses to most of what I have in mind. I’m not going to repeat earlier arguments when this is the one I want to have.

Here’s my game. This is the best chance that we have to take our country back from the leftists who want to enslave us. And yet, what I’m seeing from you lately on threads such as these is a constant stream of invective, and I simply do not see how that moves us towards our goal.

You don’t trust Trump; I get that much. Heck, you might even have good reasons for that distrust. But your attitude towards the people who do support him for whatever reason just reeks of contempt. Seriously, your posts remind me of my little sister lecturing me about misogynist microaggressions. Why would I listen to anyone who treats me like dog’s business? Why would I want to be on that person’s side?

And if you DO support any one candidate from the group we have, you’re not doing that candidate any favors.

And if you don’t support any candidate, you’re creating dissension within the conservative ranks for no reason at all. At least none that I can see.

No, build the wall while kicking them out, but unlike Cruz, he won’t let illegals stay without first going out.

Cruz wants the illegals to stay.

The alternative amnesty candidate.

I turned FOX on today to see what I missed, nothing they are still full bore anti Trump. That little twit on The Five was all over Trump for picking on the gimp. Rubio was on one of the shows and if you watched you know why Cruz is having trouble shutting this phony down.

The border *must* be secured first; it’s the top priority, the first priority.

Already done I remember distinctly that Bush signed the bill to build the fence and Obama says the border is more secure than it has ever been. You people need to stop whining and support your government. </s>

It’s a matter of timeline. I mean, if Cruz was saying, “Securing the border is the most important task, and we will devote as much energy as is necessary to do that,” that’s one thing.

But this makes it sound like he’s not even going to try deportation until after the fight with Congress over securing is over. I wish I could get a straight answer, and I can’t.

Trump has given his own statements that make me uncertain, but at least he’s bellowing about his plan instead of trying to fly under the radar. If he doesn’t follow through, he’s going to lose a LOT of good will from his followers.

I find that kind of important. Because even if I assume the most cynical view of Trump and his statements, I have to ask, why would he want to be President? He’s not evil incarnate, sent from Hell to take down St. Cruz. What does he want?

Even if we assume a 100% self-centered reason for running for office, what could that reason be? It’s not money; he’s already rich, and the Presidental office is a step down, money-wise. Probably not fame; he’s got that too. Power, maybe? Well, poking your supporters in the eye with blatant promise-breaking isn’t going to endear you to them much; I doubt you’ll keep power after that unless you’re a Democrat with the media kissing your feet and ass 24/7. Legacy? Maybe. But again, betraying the trust of your supporters isn’t exactly the best way to be a positive memory. Look at W; he was riding high in 2004 and then he ditched his supporters to promote amnesty. Not the best legacy ever.

Besides, if he wanted the office for selfish purposes, he could probably have run as a Democrat and they’d be slobbering all over him. Instead he’s running as a conservative Republican, and even owning the fact that he’s contradicting things he said 10-ish years ago in order to do so.

That went on quite a bit of a tangent, but I guess I needed to tell SOMEONE why I believe that Trump will do what he says.

I guess he stuck his finger in the wind to see which way it was blowing politically for him.

He has K-Street donors that determine his position on immigration. They hoped that the issue would die down and Trump would be gone so they let Ted come out and sound tough on immigration. The key word being "sound."

I trust Cruz says what needs to be said, but Trump I trust to get done what needs to be done using the rule of law. And that is the difference.

I saw Cruz in Bettendorf, Iowa tonight. One of the questions of him was tips very one. He started by forcefully presenting his plan., as well outlined upthread. Pretty much anything anyone could want on the subject up to this point. But he stuck to his response of waiting until all that was done and only then having a conversation over what to do with whatever illegals are still left. He said by then the numbers involved should be much smaller. Some will go back for a visit and find their return blocked. Some will go back because they can't find work with a strong, enforced, e-verify. Some will go because freebies for illegals has ended (not discussed tonight, but in his plan.). The end result, to use Trump speak in my words, not Ted's, is that the illegals will have mostly left without any, inevitably controversial and divisive, government removal plan being needed for the 'good" illegals. They'll have left on their own AND they'll have paid for it themselves!

Cruz's point, a strategic one, was that the other side always tries to start the discussion with what to do with those illegals they can manage to present as 'good' ones, point out the current lack of consensus on that (Trump is at 30%+ in GOP primary, not, at least yet, a majority in the general,) then say that because we can't agree on e hard part argue that we can't do anything. Cruz strategizes to do the above parts, on which most clearly agree. If the wall, e-verify, etc. are working well, the sanctuaries are closed, the illegals with additional crimes are in jail or deported and of the rest self deport so that local and state budgets aren't being crunched, Americans aren't being competed out of jobs, and our culture isn't being displaced perhaps even the firmest Trump types would say 'good enough.' If problems remain then we can try to reach agreement on whatever else still needs doing to solve them. Without scaring the legal Hispanic voters into HRC's arms up front over about any general Hispanic round ups she'd confabulate.

I think it's much better strategy and more likely to get done than Trump's approach. And it leaves political good will for fixing all the other problems Washington created. Immigration is the biggest issue, but not the only essential one this time. Fix just it and we've lost. Cruz understands the whole scope of the problem and wants to fix it all. None of the others do.

It’s the 2nd best immigration policy out there.

But it’s not even close to Trump’s.
