How alarmed were New Jersey officials by reports of Muslims dancing in the streets of Jersey City and Paterson on Sept. 11, 2001, to celebrate the destruction of the World Trade Center?
They feared riots would break out and were ready to send in the National Guard and the State Police to preserve order.
But John J. Farmer Jr., then the New Jersey attorney general and the state's chief law enforcement officer, said on Tuesday that he ordered an investigation that very day and found the reports to be bogus, more wild stories born in the stricken hours after the attacks.
Nevertheless, those ancient, false rumors were recycled as truth over the weekend by Donald J. Trump, who has folded them into his calls for the national registration of Muslims and possible closing of mosques.
Reporters were unable to find any evidence for his story, but Mr. Trump stuck with it in a television interview on Sunday. "It did happen," he said. "I saw it. It was on television."
Few people, if any, could address the circumstances more definitively than Mr. Farmer, who went on to serve as senior counsel to the Sept. 11 commission.

In Jersey City, within hours of two jetliners’
plowing into the World Trade Center, law enforcement authorities detained and questioned a number of people who were allegedly seen celebrating the attacks and holding tailgate-style parties on rooftops while they watched the devastation on the other side of the river.

Yes, I know about the report of Muslims in New Jersey but that was a written or oral report, not a film and Trump said he “saw” them. Also, the written/oral report did not say there were “thousands” of them as Trump said.
Plus, that written/oral report of law enforcement said they were questioning “people” (didn’t say they were Muslim), said “allegedly” seen celebrating the attack so there was no eye witness to that - it was just reported, not seen.
Trump is not careful in his speech to make sure he has the actual facts and he exaggerates to make his point. As I said, that exaggeration is okay in his real estate dealings, but not for a president who we need to be able to trust he is giving us the truth and nothing but the truth without exaggeration making it false.
Producing a first or second or third hand report that some Muslims somewhere may have been happy does not prove Trump correct.
Of course many Muslims were happy about 911, but they generally kept it amongst themselves in the US and certainly did not gather in the thousands to openly celebrate anywhere in this country.
Trump "misremembered" it. He should just admit that and move on.
Millions of people were recording broadcasts on their VCRs that day. If it happened somebody would have it. I wish I did! I’d sell it to Trump for $10,000.
CNBC showed at least 4 groups of American Muzzies celebrating 9/11. It could have been more, but I can’t recall. I watched CNBC from about 4:30 AM PST, to 11:00 AM, then I switched back and forth between CNBC and Fox.
A modern day Winston Smith has long since dumped the media into the memory hole as instructed by the Ministry of Truth.
My brother in was on the scene in Liberty Park because was a cop at the ttime and On duty.
I am the one who heard it second hand.
The media claiming these celebrations NEVER happened. They are hedging by claiming Trump said 2500 were celebrating, as if the number really matters.
Yes, he misremembers and exaggerates quite often. The account of seeing "thousands and thousands" in New Jersey is only one of his untruths/exaggerations. Another one was saying Carson "hit his mother over the head", and Carson didn't actually hit her, he was stopped by his brother from doing that. Trump takes a happening and changes it to his advantage and people believe him.
You are missing it: The press is insisting that nobody celebrated.
Fact is: They did.
Looks like we have Muzzie sympathizers among us. Thanks for the links. I’ll be watching that one.
Your candidate sets a fine example of not trashing Trump and inferring that he is a liar, you ought to clean up your act and do the same.
But if he had seen it on TV, that video would’ve been found and replayed by now. There’s no way in the modern age it would be lost. He probably saw the Middle East celebrations on TV and conflated it with the print report about NJ in his mind. I remember seeing the Palestinian celebrations on TV too. But I watched coverage non-stop for months and I would’ve both seen and remembered it if they had similar footage from the U.S.
Sure seems that way.
I don't think Trump is lying, I think he's mixing up unsubstantiated rumors about Paterson with actual footage of Gaza and the West Bank. If you're sincere and remember the same thing trump remembers, I think you're just confused too.
Millions of people were running their VCRs that day. If such footage actually aired someone will share, and I will be proven wrong, but we both know that's not going to happen.
