Donald Trump must apologize to Muslim Americans and to Jersey City for his untrue, divisive and reprehensible comments perpetuating an old rumor we thought had rightly died.

By repeating – and indeed embellishing – this hateful rumor, Trump once again ratchets up the ugliness in the current political climate.

Thousands and thousands of people in Jersey City did not cheer the destruction of the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001. Period. End of story. There is no need to continue to "fact check'' his words.

The truth is that Trump's statements are factually, ethically and morally wrong. Those of us who were really there that day and in the days that followed know that Jersey City suffered tremendous loss, mourned and stepped up to help.

Don’t doubt they did in NJ. I know they did in Edmonton! A TV News man was interviewing the imam of a mosque in Edmonton, the oldest in Canada. The imam was ‘disappointed and ‘shocked’ that anyone would do that. A hijab-wearing woman came out of the mosque dancing, with a big smile on her face. The imam gave her a dirty look and suddenly, her face sank and she started weeping.

"Trump got it wrong. There WERE Muslims celebrating but it was in the West bank; NOT in NJ. Trump just looked foolish when he made that statement. If there really were celebrations in NJ, there would have been at least a video or a picture. And, BTW, that 9-18-01 Washington Post article that people love to use as "proof" was later shown to be unsubstantiated."

Trump has gone all Brian Williams.

He has confused things in his head, but rather than take the decent way out he's doubling down, turning an honest mistake into an outright lie.

This is not a man we can allow to get anywhere near the Oval Office.
