Ted Cruz on Friday put a bit of distance between himself and arguably his closest ally in the presidential race: Donald Trump.
Kicking off a two-day swing through Iowa, the U.S. senator from Texas was asked about Trump's apparent openness Thursday to a national registry of American Muslims in the wake of the recent Paris terrorist attacks.
"I'm a big fan of Donald Trump's, but not a fan of government registries of American citizens," Cruz told reporters before a town hall at Briar Cliff University. The "First Amendment protects religious liberty."
Asked Thursday by NBC News if he wanted to monitor Muslims in America through a database, Trump replied he would "certainly implement that." The suggestion has drawn comparisons to Nazi Germany and has sparked bipartisan criticism.
Cruz has cultivated a chummy relationship with the billionaire, declining to directly criticize him on a host of issues. He refused to go further Friday when asked again about Trump's idea, reiterating his belief that reporters just want to see the two duke it out.
Cruz was joined at the town hall by U.S. Rep. Steve King of Iowa, who endorsed the senator Monday. Speaking with reporters, King also expressed some opposition to Trump's idea of a Muslim registry, saying he did not know how it would work in practice.

Son was speaking of Britain’s borders and law preparedness at this time, not the Islamic religion. He and I did not discuss that.
You have your own opinion of Islam and so did the ex-cia agent who has lived many years among the Islamic people of numerous countries. His talk stared with the history of that religion and how different it is now from what it was many years ago.
Entropy, look at what this guy is saying about me. Thank you.
I weep for America.
Complete failure. Instead, you come back with a post calling me a "damned fool" and "disingenuous."
Wake up, please.
Twisting my meaning and then strutting around piously deserves a sharp rebuke.
You idiot, as I pointed out your disingenuousness was contained in the very post I responded to. Cut and paste it yourself.
The Texas Tribune is a product of the University of Texas in Austin, Texas. Can you say liberal?
Why should I bother, then? What possible value is there in being careful to avoid "personalities," as they say, and stick to civility? When guys like this respond as if I had attacked them personally, merely because I disagree with them politically? And when I point out that when somebody has to make false accusations or personal attacks in order to support their candidate, that it reflects badly on that candidate?
I donate to FR as much as I can afford, and will continue to do so, and thank you, Jim, for having created this great place. But I have to wonder -- what is the point of asking folks to be civil in their discourse, when being civil with great care results in outright false and insulting accusations on me personally?
In other words, NO, you cannot back up your accusations.
Do not ever forget, the end goal is to prevent Hillary or other open borders RINO win the white house. No need to make it a personal fight between FR posters. Please keep it civil.
And you absolutely FAIL when I request that you cut-and-paste words I've written here or on any other Trump/Cruz threads to support your contention, let alone words where I have personally insulted a Trump supporter as you have personally attacked and insulted my own integrity.
Is this typical of Trump supporters? Because if it is ... Trump is looking worse by the day in that the behavior of a candidate's supporters speaks volumes about the candidate. I have many loved ones, personal friends, and Freeper FRiends who are Trump supporters, which is why I go to GREAT CARE to refrain from such personal insult as YOU, Craig Livingstone, direct at me.
Knock off the personal attacks or post elsewhere!!
By the way, Go, Cruz, GO!!
Go, Trump, GO!!
Oh for the love of... maybe you aren’t disingenuous, maybe you are just effing stupid. I’ll try again, one more time. When one says that there are only “49ers, refs, and Seahawks” on the football field, one is not necessarily asserting that any person on the field is all three. Similarly, claiming you as a piece of evidence of the accuracy of the negative attributes I mentioned some as having before does not necessitate that I asserted you belong in all of them, although I’m now suspecting you just might. Here’s a “golden” bit of your mean and childish wit:
“Trump, on the other hand, says the same things Cruz has been saying for ages, and his supporters practically fall on their backs and pee over their heads in delight, as if Trump was the first and only guy to say them.”
Gross.
LOL!
I’m a Cruz supporter too!
Trump is ‘acceptable’ to me.
Love Trump’s campaign; hope it leads to America picking Cruz.
We all err, we can all try to do better.
Snide personal attacks are given out here daily against Trump supporters.
I am a big fan of Ted Cruz. Some of his supporters, not so much.
Thank you Jim, God bless.
I agree, but if the nasty anti-Trump supporter — and anti-Trump is fine, I’m talking about personal insults of his supporters — attacks are left to stand, these people should be retaliated against. It’s gotten out of hand.
You defended Islam and your statement was very clear that Muslims should NOT be registered and went on to defend them under the First Amendment as if they are a “religion.” They are NOT a religion, they are a political movement which has declared war on the western world which includes America. People who sympathize with them are undermining America, plain and simple. They INTEND to use our laws against us. I would suggest you speak with your son on subjects that really matter ..like the TAKEOVER of England by the Muslims. Lets talk about the British soldier BEHEADED while walking down the street in London for starters....and the fact that nobody went to his aid!
We need another Charles Martel before we become another Iberia or Califat de Cordoue..
Cruz supporters should be thanking their lucky stars for Trump — should the country in general find Trump too outlandish or radical, Cruz will come off looking like the poster-boy for reason and moderation, thus blocking a likely media attack meme.
... so NOW I actually take the time to carefully read anything I find about Trump (or what is complimentary of Cruz, for that matter) much more carefully, and am happy to say that in the past month or so, have declined to post supposedly eye-opening stuff about Trump (in the negative) because it was in fact disingenuous and misleading. It's been a good lesson. Now when I post a link to something about Trump or Cruz, either one, I read it much more carefully first, because crow isn't always tasty! {^)
God bless you and yours!
