Ben Carson's remarks on foreign policy have repeatedly raised questions about his grasp of the subject, but never more seriously than in the past week, when he wrongly asserted that China had intervened militarily in Syria and then failed, on national television, to name the countries he would call on to form a coalition to fight the Islamic State.
Faced with increasing scrutiny about whether Mr. Carson - who leads in some Republican presidential polls - was capable of leading American foreign policy, two of his top advisers said in interviews with The New York Times that he had struggled to master the intricacies of the Middle East and national security and that intense tutoring was having little effect.
"Nobody has been able to sit down with him and have him get one iota of intelligent information about the Middle East," Duane R. Clarridge, a top adviser to Mr. Carson on terrorism and national security, said in an interview. He also said Mr. Carson needed weekly conference calls briefing him on foreign policy so "we can make him smart."

The man is smart about brain surgery and some other things.....but he sure doesn;t have all his ducks in a row.
who is Duane R. Clarridge? This guy can’t be trusted. Which idiot goes to NYT to trash their own candidate
It's not weird, it's calculated. Whenever you take on an "ex" CIA agent as an advisor (read: into your inner circle), you are going to be subject to how the CIA plays politics (which is hardball style).
As for the CIA, the expansion of ISIS suggests that it's the CIA who doesn't understand the intricacies of the Middle East...
Carson is not my first pick, but I would be more suspicious of the attacker than Carson who goes to NYT. This is a betrayal. An attempt to damage him by the Left
It is weird. Carson’s a nice guy and a talented surgeon but is definitely not ready to be President.
I used the term Palinization specifically because her debate prep team later ran to the NYT and said disparaging things about her.
Both Carson and Palin are considered political outsiders...so much so that even their ‘advisors’ are more loyal to the NYT than to them.
BTW, Carson is a no go for me...but the media and GOP should be called out on Palinization whenever it happens.
Why would an advisor do such a thing. He will never work again, if true. Something fishy here.
Foriegn policy is easy. Just read what the NY Times advocates and do the opposite
I think this advisor was a sleeper plant by Bush or Rubio campaign.
I agree.
I would suggest that the "top" adviser be fired, but it's not like the media is reliable, or honest.
When as this???
Mr. Carson needs to rethink his advisors. Giving the Slimes a hit piece. Not good.
When did he say that about Terri??
Not a Carson fan but this is the Slimes. Not buying anything they say.
Did Carson produced evidence regarding China involvement in Syria? His information is better than WH!!!
There are very smart people who only can focus on limited things.
There are very smart people who can focus on the big picture and foresee probable long-term results.
Carson may be a candidate of the first group, but he seems incapable of comprehending the big picture of causes and results.
I would never vote for Carson.
Meanwhile, he needs to rid himself of this disloyal advisor.
Maybe they think Carson claiming ignorance of foreign policy confirms just how ‘pure’ and unpolitical he really is.
That ‘Stab-Zilla’ story seems to perversly work in his favor, why would this approach?/
Had no clue on US Cuban “wet foot dry foot” policy.
Incredible.
