Donald Trumpâs high standing in the polls is attributable entirely to the fact that heâs not a Washington insider, not part of the racket, and despite his wealth really might actually give a damn about the Little Guy. So why is he saying things like this?
Donald Trump on Wednesday defended government property seizures as a ânecessary thing,â even when it means involuntarily taking property from a private owner to transfer it to another business. Trump was speaking to reporters outside the capital statehouse moments before formally filing his candidacy for the February primary, and the Washington Examiner pressed him on his record of using eminent domain laws to expand his casino empire.
âProperty rights are a big issue in New Hampshire,â the Examiner noted. âIn Atlantic City you used eminent domain laws aggressively to expand your casino.â
Trump interjected by calling this a âstupid questionâ before launching into a defense of eminent domain. âI am all for private property rights,â Trump said. âThereâs nobody who wants property taken away less than I do, believe me. I would lose a lot of money if my property were taken away. But when youâre building a road, when youâre building a highway, when youâre building whatever it is youâre building from a municipal standpoint, you may need a corner of a piece of property.â As he said this, he pinched his fingers together to demonstrate the smallness of the property.
The abstract reasoning may be sound â although in the Supreme Courtâs disgraceful Kelo decision it certainly was not â but the optics are terrible. It smacks of Romneyism, a cluelessness about how ordinary people live their lives.
“But it never was intended to aid a private enterprise in itâs search for profits, nor the local city government in search of tax revenue.”
I never said it did. If Trump thinks it does, then I think he is wrong.
I was furious when Ronald Reagan signed his amnesty bill, and the ill effects of that bill has expanded exponentially. The effects of the Kelo decision are statistically non-existent compared to what Reagan did with his amnesty. He later admitted that signing that bill was a mistake. However, I would still have voted for Reagan. I will not wait around for a candidate to vote precisely like I would. It will never happen.
lol!
They should not, which is why the law, as with most laws has exploits that have not been corrected by the legislature, and I think it’s pretty clear why that has not happened.
The request for the H1B should be accompanied by a showing of need and that that need cannot be fulfilled at any price, but that is not what has happened in far too many instances...but not all.
As such I am not opposed to H1B, or any of the Visa programs as a matter of principle, but if they are mismanaged or damaging to Americans, then when this occurs and can be shown, the program should be modified or put on hiatus, or curtailed to mitigate the issue.
Easy to say..but the people we trust to oversee these programs have failed miserably to do so. However, that is not directly related to the program’s worthiness. It is a failure of our legislature in DC and just one of hundreds.
Yes the 86 amnesty was a huge mistake that took decades to develop.
It still has not been fixed, and worse than that, many republicans want to repeat it.
But that’s not the issue here. What is at issue is how trump views taking property from people, even though it’s compensated.
if he were thinking as a president and not as a private businessman, his comment would, I would think, be more nuanced. But it was not.
I don’t know that he even thinks in terms of the Constitution or has any specific opinions or thoughts on it.
I am sure that if necessary, his staff will write a opinion for him.
(and I was not using sarcasm)
The Great Jebbie Bush
erkelly - you’re trying to have a rational discussion with a foaming TDSer...
If you are pizzed off about the Kelo decision call the Supreme Court who handed the decision down not Donald Trump. Or call the Congress who did nothing to over turn the decision. Donald Trump had nothing to do with it.
You are right.... I had a friend that was renting mind you and received enough money to buy a nice house.
I’ll believe Trump is finished when 10,000’s of supporters quit coming to see him Stump.
We have ISIS to worry about...
We have illegal’s streaming across the border to worry about...
We have the obamacare disaster to worry about...
We have the destruction of our military through importing homo’s and defunding to worry about.....
We have unborn babies being slaughtered and sold to worry about...
We have attacks on our energy production to worry about...
We have assaults on our 2nd amendment rights to worry about...
We have the assaults on our Christian beliefs to worry about...
There are more I’ve missed, but we can deal with Kelo and eminent domain after the really important stuff is repaired.
I believe Trump will prioritize the important items.
If Trump became president and lay awake at night thinking about how he could take people’s property; if the desire consumed him to the point of madness, it would all be to no avail, he would have no power over it.
However, you are probably a Cruz supporter grasping at straws trying to find a reason to be a Cruz supporter after Cruz voted to support the Obama agenda twice this year.
“I donât know that he even thinks in terms of the Constitution or has any specific opinions or thoughts on it.”
You have not the slightest sliver of evidence to write that.
You are confusing imagination with reality.
Gifted and educated Americans SHOULD cost more than their third world competitors.
Well, in the real world, nationality should play no role in setting a salary. At least, I cannot conceive of any situation where it would.
I don’t believe I have ever seen that in the marketplace. Nor should I see it.
Right now this Country has far, far bigger fish to fry...It’s a waste of time even talking about eminent domain at this point in time...And no, it won’t affect Trump’s standing in the least...
I guess it depends on where you place your allegiance.
Well, he’s never discussed the topic to my knowledge, so yes, I do have a reason to write that.
Since you decided to get snarky, I can adjust to that.
A politician, even one newly minted telling me that “I have conservative views”, is a lot different then being a conservative. If not for immigration, he’d be sucking air in the polls with the conservative bloc.
I think if anyone is grasping at straws, it’s you.
Trump is a “no sale” for my vote. He’s just another “Queens” republican. A single issue candidate. Not conservative, not liberal. A Rudy Giuliani, Bill O’really, typical eastern republicrat running with the “r” this time...never ran for office before or even considered it, and the choice of party after Obama was easy to make. He could have gone either way..
The issue you will have to deal with if he is elected, is the other 50% of him that you have not seen. The part that his staff has probably never seen. The part that a candidate with a track record usually shows.
I see that coming, and I would much prefer to avoid it if I can.
I don’t understand the support he gets here on FR where we are supposed to be the more well read, educated, and unabashedly conservative of the entire republican voter base. But then I rarely do understand the psychology of this forum on election years. It often runs contrary to common sense or conservative doctrine..
You can have your candidate, but don’t denigrate me or mine, or like Trump, I will come right back at you.
Well that's not even a veiled insult...it's right out there in the open.
Just what allegiance are you talking about?
Mine is the same as my oath of enlistment I pledged some 45 years ago.
As far as I know it's still good.
"Too protect and defend against all enemies, foreign or domestic".
Don't ever question it again.
“unabashedly conservative of the entire republican voter base.”
As a poster pointed out lately, we do not have the luxury anymore of the conservative/liberal debate. If immigration is not stopped in the next 18 months, it is ALL OVER. There will NEVER, EVER be a conservative who will ever win the presidency.
One of the amazing things about people (on this site) who hate Trump and accuse him of being a liberal is the fact that the people (MSM, RINOs) who hate him most are liberals.
“...never ran for office before or even considered it...”
Which of the elected professional Republicans do you admire?
“You can have your candidate, but donât denigrate me or mine, or like Trump, I will come right back at you.”
Because you denigrated mine, did you not?
You were easy to spot — trying to evince immense concern over an issue when you would still not support Trump if the issue did not exist. Psychologists call that “playing the blemish” game.
I’ve got no quarrel with someone who up front says, “I like Cruz”.
I think you place entirely too much emphasis on Trump and the Immigration problems.
The required immigration law is already on the books and has been throughout Obama’s terms.
Any conservative can repair what Obama has done and they will when they roll back his executive orders, and regain control over ICE so that local authorities can round up illegals for deportation or incarceration as they once did prior to Obama.
If that is the only reason, (and it is) that you Trumpsters can point out as a qualifier for Trump to be president, you are making a mistake.
Lastly, you are from Louisiana....no?
More than any other state that I am politically astute on, Louisiana takes the prize for electing liars, party switchers, and outright criminals.
In fact you are re-electing 80% of the idiots who have destroyed the budget year after year in Louisiana. I lived there during the Edwin Edwards admin. I stay up to date as I still have kids there. I see Jim Fannin is still there, only now he’s a republican...lololol...
I’m just pointing out to you that politics is largely a game of public manipulation by very talented media types and image consultants..
Trump has the best. Nothing you see is a accident.
But you, over and above all others, should be able to discern that, and for some reason you can’t.
Balkanization of the US, is certainly a oncoming freight train of a problem, but it can be dealt with and through existing law. Same with the sanctuary cities.
What requires a special person is the attempt to repair a tattered constitution without which we have nothing.
I think that while we have numerous important issues to deal with, the overarching one is a damaged Constitution and it’s legal authorities charged to protect it, and not destroy it.
How do you think trump will do on SCOTUS picks?
How about the authorities that Obama has seized from the legislature? Do you think trump will refuse to use them out of principle?
What are Trumps principles?
Don't pat yourself on the back....too hard, you did not ask me who I support, and frankly since the thread is about trump, my candidate is not the issue here.
But a quick look at my posting history will tell you that I have been a Cruz supporter since before he announced.
I don't hate trump at all, but I'm not going to pussy foot around at this stage of the race. I personally dislike a number of candidates, but not trump. I no reason to dislike him as there is no political history to be critical of.
For the same reasons, I would be unlikely to support him at all. I don't know what Trump will do. His one liners and repetitive campaign speeches notwithstanding..
