Donald Trump will not be the Republican nominee for president, Ted Cruz said Thursday, claiming that a majority of the Manhattan real-estate mogul's supporters would end up voting for him instead.
Cruz was asked whether he believed he could beat Trump based on his principles, in an interview with WABC's Rita Cosby that will air on Sunday.  "I think that's right. I think in time I don't believe Donald is going to be the nominee and I think in time the lion’s share of his supporters end up with us," the freshman senator predicted. "And I think the reason is what I was just saying, that if you look to the records of all the Republican candidates there's a big difference between my record and that of everyone else if you ask, who has stood up to Washington?
He continued: "Who's taken on not just Democrats, but taken on leaders in their own party? Republican leadership, whether was leading the fight to stop Obamacare? Whether it was leading the fight to stop executive amnesty? Or actually, just going back to last week. You know at the last Republican debate in California, every Republican candidate stood up there and said, 'we need to defund Planned Parenthood.' But last week, when we had an epic drag down fight in Washington, not one of them showed up."
Cruz, who has declined to criticize Trump, unlike some of his GOP presidential rivals, reiterated that he is "glad" he is in the race and that his candidacy has reflected favorably on his own positions.

People say the same thing about Trump, pointing to the fact that his negatives are almost twice as high as his positives with the general electorate.
IMHO, Cruz lacks humility.
So I must assume that you are not a Trump supporter. Because if there is anyone in the race that exemplifies arrogance and lack of humility, it is Trump. That seems to be what most Trump supporters like about him!
To do what needs to be done the candidate needs a network outside of the professional political class. That IMO is what Cruz doesn’t have - and Trump does. I’d love to see Cruz in the administration in some capacity but not without Trump.
Cruz has a far greater chance of getting steamrollered by the status quo than Trump.

I think Trump is very humble and I am a Trump supporter. There was an old interview...maybe 20 years old which was very informative as to personality...as well as an interview with his family and The Apprentice.
Not the only other possible answer. Ted could have stuck with the theme he's had regarding Trump from the first:
I'm glad Donald is in the race, and I have make my case to the voters, including making my case to the supporters of any candidates who drop out.
Many ways to respond without getting into negative meme about Trump. How did that work for Perry, Graham, Jindal, Paul, Bush and others?
Ted made a mistake predicting Trump will not be the nominee, a pointless thing to say and bound to offend some Trump supporters.
Keep Sessions name out of this....
perhaps you don’t remember how Cruz was bent on this bill, even working against Senator Sessions and accusing Sessions of getting it wrong.

I agree with your read on Cruz’s perspective, but I don’t see it playing out that way. It will be a major reversal for Trump to drop out. It will be a second major reversal for Cruz to rise to the extent he can gather Trump’s supporters. Then, even if those two long shots occur, I do not see Cruz having the crossover appeal to some typically blue voters that Trump enjoys.
I don't think that word means what you think it means. Trump can be described as many things, but humble isn't even on the list.

Why keep Session out of it? He and Cruz wrote the immigration language together. Cruz also came out and admitted he had been wrong and that is why they worked together on it.
Both of them are honorable men.

Trump will probably respond that he welcomes someone with the principles of Ted Cruz in the race. If he doesn’t say anything it will be due to his team telling him not to give Cruz traction.
I think the goal here is to use the GOPe’s tactics against them. Get rid of each GOPe candidate 1 by 1 until it is Cruz, Trump, Carson and Fiorina.

First thought that went through my mind this summer, but... I think that is our wishful thinking, and here is why. Trump is enjoying some very unusual crossover appeal, similar to the old “Reagan Democrat” thing which we have not seen in decades now. If Palin was put on the ticket as VP, almost all of that crossover appeal would instantly vanish. It isn’t fair, it isn’t rational, but the combined vilification and scapegoating of Sarah Palin by the media, the Democrats, and the GOP itself (including Romney, McCain and the Bushes) would start the ticket off with a drag, not a boost. She would have to be on her A game to have a chance, even better than 2008, and frankly she hasn’t shown that level of fire in the belly in years. I just don’t see it.
I -DO- see her being put in a significant cabinet position. VP though I think is a very long shot indeed.

I have a gut feeling Trump and Cruz are on the same team and playing the other side like a fiddle.

I do know individuals.
I know people like Trump they are class A types who have to be personally involved in the day to day operation of their empires.
My thoughts that Trump won’t give up his day to day activities are, as I said, strictly a feeling (I have a pretty good intuitive track record ) . Only time will tell how that pans out. I wouldn’t bet on it either way. It won’t make or break my spirit either way. But thanks for calling me obtuse none the less.
Wrong. Cruz isn't supporting a pathway to citizenship.
