Donald Trump will not be the Republican nominee for president, Ted Cruz said Thursday, claiming that a majority of the Manhattan real-estate mogul's supporters would end up voting for him instead.
Cruz was asked whether he believed he could beat Trump based on his principles, in an interview with WABC's Rita Cosby that will air on Sunday. "I think that's right. I think in time I don't believe Donald is going to be the nominee and I think in time the lions share of his supporters end up with us," the freshman senator predicted. "And I think the reason is what I was just saying, that if you look to the records of all the Republican candidates there's a big difference between my record and that of everyone else if you ask, who has stood up to Washington?
He continued: "Who's taken on not just Democrats, but taken on leaders in their own party? Republican leadership, whether was leading the fight to stop Obamacare? Whether it was leading the fight to stop executive amnesty? Or actually, just going back to last week. You know at the last Republican debate in California, every Republican candidate stood up there and said, 'we need to defund Planned Parenthood.' But last week, when we had an epic drag down fight in Washington, not one of them showed up."
Cruz, who has declined to criticize Trump, unlike some of his GOP presidential rivals, reiterated that he is "glad" he is in the race and that his candidacy has reflected favorably on his own positions.

“Cruz keeps pumping himself as a latino-—a latino born in Canada? “
It’s worse than that, a Canadian pretending to be a Texan. Cowboy boots and all. Ready to sign those Hb1 Visas to 350,000 a year! No deportation under Senor Cruz.
I trust actions infinitely more than words. Senator Cruz has 'come to Washington' and he has put action behind his words, that can be trusted .....
Sen. Cruz: The Real Story of What Is Happening in Washington
Cruz voted against TPA in the final bill because it did not include the immigration language he and Sessions wanted. He does not support TPP. He will not vote for it.
How obtuse can one person get?!
Trump has already turned his business over to his sons Don,Jr. and Eric, and his daughter Ivanka. He has taught them so well, and they have absorbed his teaching so thoroughly, that it’s almost like he hadn’t gone anywhere.
Go to the trump.com website and click the links that introduce those 3 children. You’ll see that if, God forbid, Trump were gone tomorrow, the business would continue without missing a beat.
A good businessman always has someone groomed to keep things going if he should have to let go. There is no LASTING SUCCESS without a successor.
In the latest polls
Hillary Clinton
38% favorable
56% unfavorable
****
Ted Cruz
29% favorable
42% unfavorable
This favorable, unfavorable thing they are doing doesn’t mean much. I guess all that will matter are votes.
well guess what.....if DT is sworn in as President - by your own standards - he is then AN INSIDER TOO PERIOD END OF DISCUSSION.
Now my standards are superior.....in that “insider” is a state of mind. And obviously neither Trump nor Cruz nor Carson have that state of mind. Period. Like I said, I like my standard.
Cruz VOTED to fast-track TPP....then he voted against it.
Don’t ever trust a pol who wants it both ways.
I don’t think he was disrespectful of Trump at all. I think these two genuinely like each other. I don’t think it was a good idea for him to make predictions. Better for him to say that if Trump dropped out, his supporters would still have a champion in the race since he and Trump are so close on the issues.
Yes, yes, and yes. Good points, all.
Rita Cosby?
I think you nailed Dr. Carson exactly. I was reading about some of the malpractice suits he has against him, leaving sponges in peoples heads, etc.
Lets be honest, if Carson wasn’t Black, we would never have heard of him. He is the least Presidential of all the candidates.
Cruz will vote against TPP when it comes up for vote. He voted against TPA because it did not have the immigration language he and Sessions wanted in it.
Cruz poll numbers have remained low, haven’t really grown. A true candidate of the religious conservative base, but lacks ability to draw others in party. Certainly won’t get any democrat crossover votes, infact dems will probably show up to vote to keep him from winning the general election. I think they would be afraid of a Cruz administration.
Take it with a grain of salt.
No, of course it wasn't. Cruz, who is running for president, should have said he's only in it for laughs because he knows Trump will be the nominee.
It's really interesting to see how many "conservatives" have contempt for the most solid Constitutionalist in the race.
Another Freeper showing his contempt for the most solid conservative in the race.
Strange days...
Cruz has a plan, which does not include taking Trump on head to head at this point. Right now, he is playing the long game. He has a better ground game in most of the early states up to and including the SEC primary in March. He plans to build up his pool of delegates in all of the proportional states, and continue to reach out to the supporters of other candidates so that they become Cruz supporters when their candidates drop out. And with Cruz's fundraising and grassroots support, he will be able to last long into the primary season, a lot longer than almost anyone other than Donald. So at some point, it may become a 2 man race, but it's not there yet, and Cruz is not going to treat it like it is.
