Donald Trump will not be the Republican nominee for president, Ted Cruz said Thursday, claiming that a majority of the Manhattan real-estate mogul's supporters would end up voting for him instead.
Cruz was asked whether he believed he could beat Trump based on his principles, in an interview with WABC's Rita Cosby that will air on Sunday. "I think that's right. I think in time I don't believe Donald is going to be the nominee and I think in time the lions share of his supporters end up with us," the freshman senator predicted. "And I think the reason is what I was just saying, that if you look to the records of all the Republican candidates there's a big difference between my record and that of everyone else if you ask, who has stood up to Washington?
He continued: "Who's taken on not just Democrats, but taken on leaders in their own party? Republican leadership, whether was leading the fight to stop Obamacare? Whether it was leading the fight to stop executive amnesty? Or actually, just going back to last week. You know at the last Republican debate in California, every Republican candidate stood up there and said, 'we need to defund Planned Parenthood.' But last week, when we had an epic drag down fight in Washington, not one of them showed up."
Cruz, who has declined to criticize Trump, unlike some of his GOP presidential rivals, reiterated that he is "glad" he is in the race and that his candidacy has reflected favorably on his own positions.

We’ll see.
I understand his position, but it’s too early to make predictions.
Cruz makes a good point and it is anyone's guess at this point
A LOT, however, has to occur to dethrone D Trump (at THIS stage of the cycle)
Cruz is a class act. While asserting his belief that HE will be the nominee, he doesn’t engage in crass attacks on Trump. How Trump responds to this (if he does) will be highly revealing of their personal interactions.
Was this a good idea?
Cruz snooze ...zzzzzzzzzzz...
Makes me not want to vote for Cruz just to be contrary.
The outside insider.
Hopefully Trump responds in the right way...something like “Cruz is a great man and he believes in himself, we need more of that”
he could even add, hey if it`s not me I will endorse Ted
Why do I feel trump will drop out at the last minute rather than put his vast fortune in the hands of ‘blind trustees’.
He gives constant nods to both Cruz and Carson....I think he will back one of these guys....
I could be very wrong .... Just a feeling.
Impetuous.
Too bad Cruz enabled SECRET ObamaTRADE
because Mr. Trump did not.
Trump is way ahead. I don’t believe for one minute he would back out and hand off.
A Trump tweet from last night.
Donald J. Trump @realDonaldTrump
I was so happy when I heard that @Politico, one of the most dishonest political outlets, is losing a fortune. Pure scum!
Trump took out the governor with arguably the most conservative record without a protest peep from the base.
Now a senator with arguably the most conservative record is making himself an entree for Trump.
This will be interesting to say the least.
Trump was specifically asked on MSNBC by one of the interviewers, who he might pick as Vice President.
He didn’t answer the question specifically, said it was two early.
He did however make two noises which were very interesting. He said he is running against some very good people, one of whom might be his pick.
He also made some sounds which sounded to me, like he was possibly referring to Sarah Palin.
(could just be what I wanted to hear)
Trump is a very real candidate, and winning over more people every single day.
To save his fortune? I dunno!
AS SAM ADAMS76 INSIGHTFULLY POSTED: All signs point to Trump dropping out:
<><> He is number one by wide margins in most of the polls.
<><> He draws masses of SRO enthusiastic crowds wherever he goes.
<><> Every network is clamoring to interview him.
<><> Debates featuring him have record TV ratings (and ad sales).
Looks like its only a matter of time before Donald drops out.
Cruz won’t for sure. What’s he running for lately, last place?
He’s a class act, whether or not he should have stirred this hornet’s nest up is another matter.
His kids can do just fine. All of them grown and smart.
