McCarthy's demise comes hard on the heels of Boehner bowing out of the speakership as a sort of human sacrifice to the tea party right. And it happens as Donald Trump is in the midst of his fourth consecutive month as the Republican front-runner for the party's presidential nomination -- and with Ben Carson and Carly Fiorina, two other people who have never held elected office before, running in second and third place, respectively.

The Freedom caucus is driving this...and I am glad to see it.

They are uniting behind their man, Webster, and without their votes, no other candidate can win the Speaker

It’s time we get someone in as Speaker who is willing to take the fight to this malicious, anti-American administration.

Then let it serve as a sign to the Senate and what is awaiting them if they do not fight themselves. Cruz and a couple of others have been showing the way...but McConnell needs to go too.

possibility exists that the establishment doesn't have the ability to put down this revolution.

Intellectual clarity? At the Washington Post? It surely is the end of the world!

We don’t elect Republicans to work and play nice with the Democrats. We elect them, because we’re tired of the Democrats.
Any Repub who wants to do things the RINO way will find themselves on the endangered species list, come next election.

“But, I also think that the possibility exists that the establishment doesn’t have the ability to put down this revolution. Which is an amazing thing to ponder as the country gets ready to elect a new president in 13 months time.”

He calls it a revolution.

Nice to hear.

I wish the Washington Compost did not use the term “full blown” as that is what sank his candidacy.

The revolution has yet to get started.

Taking the presidency is the real start of the revolution!

It’s time for a reality check. There aren’t two political parties in Congress. There are three. The Democrats, the Republicans and the Tea Party. Until we come to terms with this reality all we are doing is pissing into the wind.

Nute brilliant on Hannity, he would be very aggressive if the new speaker. Picking fights that unite the GOP and divide the Democrats. He would wage a war on Obama and make him realize the limits of the Presidency.

He would take on the GOP senate to do their jobs.

He says that government shutdown would not deter him, it was shut down twice when he was Speaker and they got reelected for the first time in 60 years.

Hannity begged him to run. Nute said he would help advise the GOP caucus, but would only talk taking the job if he had the 218 votes to become speaker.

The GOPe had better be trembling in its boots!

Or, looking for that lobbying job.

The first thing the new True Conservative speaker needs to do is meet with Ted Cruz, and plan for a final showdown with Obama - defund Obamacare, defund amnesty, defund Planned Parenthood, and file Articles of Impeachment!

Go Ted Go!!!

If thats the case then why did we elect two leaders, Bhoner and Mitch, that CAMPAIGNED on doing the exact opposite? Namely openly declaring an intent to work with Barry.

No, SOME of us vote for your stated intent. MOST of us vote to win ‘no matter what’ with some childlike idea that the leftists with an R we elect will ‘change’.

The sooner the establishment realizes it... the better chance they will have to combat it.

The author's tone is like he is speaking of ISIS. We know that WaPo is the newspaper of the Government Party, but the hate for Conservatives is really starting to come out.

This is what we are looking for a Speaker that defunds what the voters don’t want, and has lots of good ideas.
