The legislation is not about open carry, it is about those with conceal carry license who inadvertently expose their weapon while carrying,...

I disagree. That legislation was passed in 2011, but it seems some LEO's and judges don't care.

Exactly. Why show your cards. My judo sensei made us memorize the three “Ss” — surprise, speed, strength. It is no coincidence that surprise is first.

Don’t leave the DA/solicitor/prosecutor out of that equation.

Oh boy now you’ve done it....

Waiting on all those Cowboys to jump on you for that!

BTW...I agree...You want to be the gray guy...not the red one saying “shoot me” and “here I am”.

I think every legal American Citizen that passes the back ground check should be able to open carry across America!

I’m not a big fan of open carry other than in remote areas where predators like bear and wolf can be found.

However, that should be a personal choice.

I do believe that open carry by responsible people could help reacquaint the general population with guns.

Over the last few generations liberals and the liberal “education industry” has been successful in removing guns from many areas of life.

The result is that we now have a large segment of the population who have no experience with guns and have been taught to fear them and those who own them.

As an example, it was once common for high schools to have shooting clubs where teens learned gun safety, gun handling and how to shoot.

But they seem to be non-existent today in a world where kids are arrested for point their fingers.

Encountering a person with a gun and seeing that the gun is not inherently dangerious couls help change some attitudes.

If a few liberal heads explode that can’t hurt either.

I’ve been a licensed ccw in Fla. for a while now and even if I could open carry I would not. Not saying others shouldn’t, just saying my preference is to not.

Having said that, I’m have no problem with passing open carry in Fla. or any other state for that matter. If for no other reason it would make the libs go bananas. :)

Who cares? Let people carry as they please. The government should not be able to make this determination.

Yes. Blunt, edged, open, concealed, tracked, crew served, towed, belt fed, particle accelerator...

A weapon is a weapon is a weapon. It is our RIGHT to both own and carry whatever weapons we can afford that do not DIRECTLY harm others by their mere existence. Basically germ warfare and open pit nuclear stockpiles are out.

Everything else... Go for it.

As for the “shoot me first” argument... It’s BS. It just doesn’t happen. Criminals follow a path of least resistance. That’s why Uniformed police and military are considered a major deterrent.

Predators go for weak prey. They pick the lame, the young, and the old out of the herd for consumption. If you look like food, you will be eaten. Same for open carry. If you LOOK disarmed, there’s a greater chance of you being attacked. If you look armed, bad guys will go elsewhere for easier pickings and a lesser chance of ending up on a slab.

I have no problem with it, either. But I have seen way to many” open carry fanatics” that are more interested in “in your face” confrontations than protecting themselves and their loved ones.

Wrong. Who sets that “standard” that must be met? Diane Feinstein? Chuck Schumer?

If you aren’t subject to commitment or incarceration, you should be able to exercise your Right.

Amen! Lots of freepers miss the first step, which is following the Constitution. They want to jump right in with their opinion about functional details.

In todays environment not sure if the bad guys are the biggest threat. Good intended civilians calling the police “Oh no, Mr Bill, he has a gun”.

Why open carry? Global warming... it's hot here in FL and we don't wear a lot of clothes that conceal an effective weapon. /semi-sarc

OCW folks are doing it as a protest movement. Hence the “in your face” part.

It works for the gays, like it or not.

As for being “tactically sound”, your theory only works for battlefield environments... Not for common criminals. There is a completely different mentality at play.

Summer in more than half the US is just as hot. central Tx is even hotter.

Maybe a lighter weapon to match the lighter clothing?

You make a good point. I have a friend in local law enforcement and it’s common for the 911 operators to get calls from citizens because they’re in a restaurant or something and they see someones gun. The 911 operators just tell them that CC is legal in Missouri and politely tell them to chill.

There have been instances of violent bank roberies where the OC armed guard is shot at the start of the robery.

Haven’t about a half dozen OC armed police been shot across the nation in the last 5 months?

OC does not protect the person, it makes him a target.

Hope your intimidation factor works for you.

Yes. The law should have nothing to say about what should be a personal tactical choice. It’s all about ‘choice’, right?

It’s quite amazing how this open/concealed carry thing has gotten reversed. Historically, concealed carry required a permit and open didn’t. That’s because concealed was considered underhanded or sneaky in some sense whereas open carry was normal, honorable. It was concealed carry that was controversial. Now, open carry is controversial because it’s upsetting, scary. Concealed carry, to the extent it is tolerated, is due to the old adage ‘out of sight, out of mind’.

In olden times, Highlanders carried a sgian dubh (dark - as in sinister - knife), the Highlander’s equivalent of a derringer, normally secreted in the folds of his clothing. When visiting, it was removed and placed openly in the top of his stocking (where it is today worn ornamentally), visible to all so that all present could know of it. This was as a sign of respect to one’s host.

I looked up the proposed Bill HB-163 the following is an excerpt, you are correct, I was wrong:

Section 3. Section 790.053, Florida Statutes, is amended to read:
790.053 Open carrying of weapons.—

(1) A person licensed to carry a concealed firearm or weapon pursuant to this chapter may openly carry such firearm or weapon; however, except as otherwise provided by law and in subsection (2), it is unlawful for any other person to openly carry on or about his or her person any firearm or electric weapon or device. (any other person being unlicensed)
