Even though it's a stance not especially popular with some Republicans, Donald Trump continued to support eminent domain in an interview on Tuesday, calling it "a wonderful thing" that has unfairly received a bad rap.
Trump, a billionaire known for his major real estate development projects, described eminent domain as a useful tool that local governments can use to prevent greedy homeowners from derailing major projects that could create thousands of jobs or provide a public good. Trump said that some conservatives don't fully understand how eminent domain works and don't realize that homeowners are usually paid "four, five, six, ten times" what their property is actually worth.
"Eminent domain, when it comes to jobs, roads, the public good, I think it's a wonderful thing," Trump said during an interview with Fox News's Bret Baier that aired Tuesday evening. "And remember, you're not taking property you're paying a fortune for that property."
Trump's support of eminent domain, along with his use of the practice professionally, has prompted some criticism from conservatives.Republican presidential rival Rand Paul has slammed Trump over his eminent domain views, calling the mogul a big fan of the practice who has shown no consideration for small private property owners."
The super PAC for the Club for Growth, a fiscally conservative advocacy group, recently aired television advertisements in Iowa that accuse Trump of supporting "eminent domain abuse" that would allow him to "make millions while we lose our property rights." Trump said the Club for Growth's attacks have come only because he refused to donate $1 million to their cause. He added that the spots are "not right" and do not accurately explain eminent domain.

If someone wanted to give me a million dollars for my $100,000 house, I’d throw in my car.
Eminent domain, IS a good thing IF it actually is for a betterment>>>
no if you read the constitution the takings clause only applies to condemnation of property for a public use without due compensation. not a transfer to someone to increase the crackheads tax base. and you might be surprised when the wetlands people take 2 of your 2.25 for a snail darter habitat. it’s the principle man.
Quite true. FR has become much more of a battleground, rather than a refuge, as its grown over the years.
It is unbelievable that so many FReepers find ways to rationalize position that are so blatantly not conservative and which they would be (rightly) quick to condemn in a Democrat.
Such a large number of FReepers supporting a northeastern RINO is the stuff of parodies.
Im not a big fan of eminate domain. Its very hard to take. That being said as a property owner living in an area consider prime commercial or widening roads and carving into my yard! Its a double jeopardy situation. You get screwed either way! I have a business across the street from me and I fought against it. I live in a prime commercial area only because I face a highway.
Use of eminent domain for the Interstate Highway System was a valid use.
The entire country benefited.
.
Then take your liberal keister to a Third World country where they don’t have Constitutional rights, and be happy.>>>>
God bestowed rights and God required responsibilities. there are no rights without responsibilities. the constitution only guarantees certain ones and i retain all of my God bestowed rights whether this government or any other respects or elects to protect them.
America is not a nation based on personality cults. One man cannot “make” America great.
Single issue? Give me just three conservative things Trump (AS SEEN ON TV) has done since 2011 and hugging veterans doesn’t count because Democrats do that all the time.
Keep in mind he has to have done something, not just talked about it. How much of that $400 million super-great businessman income has he spent on conservative causes since becoming “conservative” or “Republican” in 2011?
It’s only $1.6 billion (4 x $400 million for those of you in Rio Linda) so can you find just 1% ($16 million) of that spent on conservatives causes? Border security? Pro-life causes? Gun rights?
Nothing? Nothing?
Worse, if his name was Donald Romney or Donald McCain they’d be all over his rhetoric, history and flip flops. But he’s New and Improved, so whatevah!
Well said.
Cant say the same about illegals.
Talk about a non sequiter. Are you honestly saying that conservatives should ignore Trump's willingness to use government to force a property owner to sell their property to him, not for a public use but so that he can make a profit, just because he might have a good position on the subject of illegal aliens? Should we also ignore it if he decides to go back to his previous positions on abortion, or on gun control?
Just because a candidate is good on one issue does not mean that thinking voters should ignore his other positions.
Not saying your wrong...but we got the house and senate back by voting for so-called true conservatives who walked the walk and talked the talk and got zilcho in return. So I don’t know that proving ones conservatism is all that it’s cracked up to be. And If I’m an example of some trump delusion syndrome then perhaps your an example of conservative delusion syndrome.
and Brett made him talk about the AC parking lot and that is the issue. he and the current black robed a$$h89es don’t differentiate public use from the substitution of public good. increased revenue is good for crackhead government spenders.
If the government tried to take my family’s homestead, I would fight them.
I certainly wouldn’t lay down like a 2 dollar wh*re. I would meet them in the mayor’s office, the courtroom and even in the sheriff’s office to put up a resistance. I don’t care what Trump says.
I cannot understand what the controversy is. Eminent Domain is in the Constitution. Trump has no control over Eminent Domain.
All our highways have been built as a result of Eminent Domain.
I suggest that the venom being spewed out over a dead issue like Eminent Domain should be reserved for the trade deals that ALL the Republicans voted for. That will touch your lives in ways that Eminent Domain never will.
The problem with e.d. is that the owner rarely gets more than his house or property is worth. It’s the opposite. In the case of the Atlantic City lady, she was offered a hell of a good deal. If people feel he’s wrong on eminent domain, and I think he is, they need to find another case where he stiffed somebody badly.
It’s an issue I disagree with but it’s not a deal breaker for me.
WRONG! The 5th Amendment says nothing about the "public good". That is the lie liberals like to use to justify taking private property to give it to their donors like Trump. The 5th Amendment says that the taking must be for public USE - such as roads, government facilities, parks, public libraries, etc. A casino or shopping mall is not a "public use".
Besides, if you dont like the direction eminent domain is going thank our pals in the black robes again.
The problem is that it is not .1% of the problem, it is Trump's idea that the government can solve problems, and knows whats best for the country. I agree with Ronald Reagan,
"Government is not the solution to our problems, Government is the Problem"
