Even though it's a stance not especially popular with some Republicans, Donald Trump continued to support eminent domain in an interview on Tuesday, calling it "a wonderful thing" that has unfairly received a bad rap.
Trump, a billionaire known for his major real estate development projects, described eminent domain as a useful tool that local governments can use to prevent greedy homeowners from derailing major projects that could create thousands of jobs or provide a public good. Trump said that some conservatives don't fully understand how eminent domain works and don't realize that homeowners are usually paid "four, five, six, ten times" what their property is actually worth.
"Eminent domain, when it comes to jobs, roads, the public good, I think it's a wonderful thing," Trump said during an interview with Fox News's Bret Baier that aired Tuesday evening. "And remember, you're not taking property you're paying a fortune for that property."
Trump's support of eminent domain, along with his use of the practice professionally, has prompted some criticism from conservatives.Republican presidential rival Rand Paul has slammed Trump over his eminent domain views, calling the mogul a big fan of the practice who has shown no consideration for small private property owners."
The super PAC for the Club for Growth, a fiscally conservative advocacy group, recently aired television advertisements in Iowa that accuse Trump of supporting "eminent domain abuse" that would allow him to "make millions while we lose our property rights." Trump said the Club for Growth's attacks have come only because he refused to donate $1 million to their cause. He added that the spots are "not right" and do not accurately explain eminent domain.

It wasn’t eminent domain. it was his insistence approving of the kelo case of wealth transfer by government gun from one citizen to another less deserving. nothing to do with eminent domain. Trump doesn’t understand the difference. and kelo is big government.
Trump would do it for a casino. I don't believe the government gets to say "everyone benefits," by a business opening its doors.
We have property rights in this country. This is a BASIC freedom issue. There had better be a *#@$ good reason for using eminent domain. It's a last resort.
That’s a lie. No developer utilizing eminent domain pays the market price. Quite the contrary, else why would he use force?
Eminent Domain is in the Constitution. Yeah, I will defend it.
Certainly is no deal breaker for me.
More straw, man. I want your house, Here’s $10. Now get out.
Of course it's stunning. The liberals say we only care about millionaires. When we throw the little guy under the bus so a billionaire can make a couple of million more, we have become that guy.
Your attitude about this subject was rather different back in 2005.
And here we thought the Left stood up for the Little Guy. It turns out they stand up for Big Corporations and Big Government. So much for private propety rights indeed.

Why the change???
And this is just peachy. And none of this even involves the President or needs his approval or can be stopped by his disapproval... this brouhaha looks like a big shiny squirrel object to me.
Many times the ultimate imminent domain are the damn presidential executive orders.
Define public “good”?
Eminent domain is often used to acquire property for public improvements.
except since kelo, it is now used to force a sale of property from one person and transfer ownership to another person. There is no law in our country that allows for that. just corrupt government.
Please tell me what this has to do with anything.
The SCOTUS made their Ruling Years ago and Eminent Domain Laws were upheld. Agree or disagree, it makes no difference.
Do people here expect a President Trump to issue an EO like Obama does and make Eminent Domain just go away? How about all the other Republicans, will they do it?
His support of Eminent Domain was discussed here Months ago.
A Property Developer supports Eminent Doman. Wow, pretty soon Cats and Dogs will want to get Married to each other.
You have little evidence he’s a conservative. He talks like a union Democrat. I know. What’s Trump done about these deeply held beliefs? Nothing.
Ya, I guess you can vote for Trump who supports emanate domain but, more importantly, also believes in making America great. Or you can vote for someone who supports, hell even promotes giving obumber and a hand full of democrats full authority to give away American Sovereignty via TPP. And gives obumber and a hand full of democrats full authority to arm, hell even pay to arm Iran. And not only wants amnesty for illegals, hell he wants to make it easier for more of them to come here. All paid for with a few dollars for his campaign. I’m still voting for Trump, at least I believe he cannot be bought.
Right at our moment of greatest triumph when the nation is totally sick of Obama and the Democrats we get a NY Democrat to run as a Republican.
I’m with you brother. Trump’s not our only hope.
So would I, but you know it doesn’t work that way. If some corporation wants to build a shopping center, you’re out on your ass with laughable compensation. The whole reason eminent domain was expanded to private use was so the land-grabbers wouldn’t have to pay fair prices.
Ok, better said than what I said, but it’s sure not what the government decides.
but the governments taking has been expanded under the law to transfer ownership from one person to another. public good has been redefined. Increased revenue is not a public good. it is a crackheads night on the town.
This is susceptible to abuse and waste, obviously. But what part is a president going to have in the question. Technical rollback in the courts? Seems that horse has fled the barn.
There are a lot of hot button issues that need constitutional amendments... oh shoot. Why argue with anyone. It’s not going to get us anywhere.
