To all the young, college-educated women out there who feel like Donald Trump will probably become president before they find a decent, eligible man, take comfort.
According to author Jon Birger, you’re not imagining things. In “Date-onomics: How Dating Became a Lopsided Numbers Game,” out today, Birger, a former writer for Fortune and Money magazines, crunched demographic, census and other data to show that it really is historically rough out there for the ladies.

The man looks at them with a puzzled look and then turns to the plumber and asks, “What’s your assistant’s name? I’m sure I’ve met him before.”

Lots of males tend to be girlymen these days, which make it even rougher to find a Mr Cleaver. If only I was 25-30 again. :(

I even had this discussion once with a pilot--a former Top Gun Navy pilot, I might add, not a shrinking violet pajama-boy--and he told me that it just wasn't worth his time to ask out a girl that he wasn't certain was interested, and he only knew she was interested if she asked him out. I said, "And how is that working out for you?" He laughed and said it wasn't.
I hear the same complaints with younger girls now. They say no one dates any more, they just "hang out" and "hook up."
The Feminists got all the laws changed to exactly how they wanted them, and now it's just not attractive to marry for a guy.

For every action there is a reaction. We are in the "reaction to feminism" period.
People who say men have to "man up" etc are not dealing realistically with what the options are. They can keep tossing their sound bites, but in general, in large numbers people do tend to make choices that are economically rational.

Probably not, my wife is a college graduate (masters degree) with a “white collar professional job”.
I out earned her for 35 years by at least 35% per year.
Now that I am retired, (10 years older than her) my retirement still equals 83% of her take home at the end of the month.
I am still just a dumb old high school graduate; with one hell of a lot of highly technical classes in water treatment, distribution, hydraulics and construction.
As my Daddy once said “not bad for the son of a West Virginia coal miner”.
There’s also the not-insignificant factor that your average young American female these days is such an insufferably spoiled princess that no decent man could put up with them for any length of time, and when they go to college they end up feeling even more entitled and less willing to play the role of mother in an intact family.
You are 100% correct, but all those over educated, upwardly mobile, didn’t want to get their hands dirty, suckers out there sure provided me with a good living for 35 years.
Put 2 kids through college, paid (in full) for 2 homes, paid for 4 pieces of property in 3 different states and bought my wife a new car every 3 years.
GOTTA LOVE’EM.
PS: They also paid for my farm, so I guess that’s 3 homes paid for in full.

How can this be a problem? After all, “A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle.”
Nail on the head. And I was absolutely 100% guilty of this when I was younger. Early to mid 20's mostly. It got better as I got a little older. It is a confidence issue, that need to be worked on through self help or professional help if need be. That being said, I'm sure some level of sheepishness can be brought on by a particularly bitchy rejection or two. Some girls are just awful. But a truly confident guy wouldn't let that phase him, really.
Well good for you. Your customers were not "suckers". They were busy people with their own jobs, and busy lives. Do you do everything for yourself? Never paid for a service?
There is another reason that the author did not consider. Maybe she is an insufferable bitch. Or fat. America seems to be overrun with loud, fat, obnoxious women who have an overinflated sense of their own sexual market value.
And who always seem to have a cadre of equally loud, fat, obnoxious women, endlessly commenting on each other's Facebook selfies with comments like "gorgeous", "hot mama", "sexy lady", and the ubiquitous "you go girl".
No wonder their self perception is skewed.
