WASHINGTON Hillary Clintons campaign said Wednesday that emails on the private server she used when she was secretary of state contained material that is now classified, the clearest explanation thus far of an issue that has roiled her bid for the presidency.
At the same time, the campaign sought to play down the disclosure by saying the material had been retroactively classified out of an abundance of caution by U.S. intelligence agencies.
She was at worst a passive recipient of unwitting information that subsequently became deemed as classified, said Brian Fallon, a spokesman for Mrs. Clintons campaign.
Mrs. Clinton has been criticized for using a private email server when she was in office. Since 2013, the server was maintained by a small Denver company and stored at a secure data center in New Jersey until it was turned over to the FBI last week. Her use of the server has prompted an FBI counterintelligence investigation.

“In one article, I think npr probe may widen, Hillary actually claimed innocent because of the culture of classification within the intelligence community.”
In classic terms, “spreading the blame”. Right out of the playbook.
Please let me know if you want on or off the Old Crow ping list.
This is even bigger news than most people think.
The classified information in the emails is still classified even if it was not marked as such. My fellow Old Crows can vouch for this. Most of us have lived our lives dealing with this information on a daily basis.
Hillary, personally, as SoS, is the classification authority for the DoS. Anyone and everyone with access to classified information is supposed to recognize when something is classified and take direct action when they find that something is mislabeled and/or being mishandled.
Saying that she saw classified information and did not immediately act to secure the information and prevent further mishandling is itself admitting to a serious violation of National Security.
On top of that, it opens her to charges of Obstruction of Justice for NOT seeing that her subordinates were disciplined for violating federal law.
Furthermore, if the White Hut knew about this and did not direct the FBI and the appropriate agency sources of the information to deal with this immediately then THEY are looking at Obstruction of Justice charges.

I think Grassley (who I have always thought was a dope) is in fact very smart to issue interrogatories about David Kendall’s security clearance to possess those thumb drives.
Since I’m sure Kendall does not have the requisite clearances, the paperwork that Grassley has requested does not exist. If so, his handing the thumb drives over was in and of itself confession to a felony, and he may not want to go to prison. He’s not Cheryl Mills or Huma Abedin, after all.
Yes, just like she and Bill did in their chinagate treason.
She wanted to hide the Clinton Foundation bribery, money-laundering, and tax evasion from "Obama" and Valerie Jarrett.
The classified information is a smokescreen to hide the real crimes. I'm sure "Obama" knows or suspects, and I'm certain ValJar understands.
The fun is just beginning.
That's not true.
Bottom line: As SoS, Clinton would have received classified e-mails during her tenure. Investigators should easily be able to find out from someone who sent some of them where they were sent. Bingo. Fait accompli.
Hillary Clinton was selling classified data to foreign governments.
Money is all she cares about.
She is a spy.
That is all there is to it.
Federal grand jury right now.
Post 33 is a good summary of all they have, for sure, so far.
It is pure incompetence. If history is a guide, this incompetence won’t stick to Hilary enough to sink her.
Working in industry, I could use my company email for some personal business.
Using my personal email for company business would get me punished and/or fired. All those correspondences belonged to the company.
Did somebody say "boob bait"?
During my career, we had yearly training on “classified” information and the handling of such. Everyone knew the drill and knew the consequences of not adhering to them. To have someone in a position as SoS that is that inept is absurd. But then again, there are “special” people everywhere. Just the inference that you MAY have violated protocols would get you in hot water. Not like the enemies of the US, both foreign and domestic, don’t have other means to access classified info, just don’t need to help them. I’m not even supposed to say what level of clearance was in place.
In her responses to the press at her meet-in-greet in North Las Vegas she looked like a deer caught in the headlights!

Private e-mail servers are unusual because they carry greater risks of getting hacked, said Scott W. Burt, president and CEO of Integro, a Denver e-mail management company.
“There are a lot of people you could hire, and they would set up (an e-mail server) and run it. That’s not hard. But there’s no real reason to do that,” Burt said. “The main motivator is you’re nervous about what is in your e-mail. It’s a control thing.”
Boian said Platte River had nothing to do with Clinton’s private home server.
Platte River, which submitted a bid for the e-mail job, stepped in four months after Clinton left the secretary job on Feb. 1, 2013, and three months after Sidney Blumenthal, a former Clinton White House staffer, reported that his e-mail account had been hacked, exposing messages sent to Clinton.
“We were literally hired in June 2013,” Boian said, “and because we use industry best practices, we had (Clinton’s) server moved to a data center in New Jersey. It remained in that spot until last week,” when the FBI picked it up Aug. 12.
Platte River also is not in possession of any Clinton e-mail backups, he said.
“The role of Platte River Networks was to upgrade, secure and manage the e-mail server for both the Clintons and their staff beginning June 2013. Platte River Networks is not under investigation. We were never under investigation. And we will fully comply with the FBI,” he said.
The U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs has given Platte River Networks until Tuesday to answer very specific questions about how that server was maintained.
In a letter to Platte River Networks CEO, Treve Suazo, the committee wants to know the following:
Please produce all documents and communications between or among employees or contractors of Platte River Networks and employees of the State Department referring or relating to Platte River Networks’ work related to Secretary Clinton’s private server.
Please produce all documents and communications between or among employees or contractors of Platte River Networks and Secretary Clinton or any representative of the Clinton family or Clinton Foundation referring or relating to Secretary Clinton’s private server.
Please produce all contracts between Platte River Networks, Secretary Clinton, the State Department, or any other party referring or relating to Platte River Networks’ work related to Secretary Clinton’s private server.
Please produce all invoices, bills, and receipts prepared by Platte River Networks or its representatives or agents regarding Platte River Networks’ work related to Secretary Clinton’s private server.
Was Platte River Networks ever made aware that the information on Secretary Clinton’s private server may contain classified or sensitive security data? If so, how did Platte River Networks learn about the classified or sensitive information? Please explain.
Is Platte River Networks authorized to maintain or access classified information? Please explain.
Did any employee of Platte River Networks receive training in the handling of classified information as it relates to Platte River Networks’ work on Secretary Clinton’s private server?
Did any employee of Platte River Networks receive training on preserving federal records pursuant to the Federal Records Act of 1950 as it relates to Platte River Networks’ work on Secretary Clinton’s private server?
I used to do that training and conduct the security inspections.
One of my favorite UNCLAS sea stories is about the time I went to do the annual briefing and inspection for a Naval Intelligence Reserve Unit in Seacaucus, NJ. It was summer, I was a Lieutenant then, and wearing whites.
I walked on the quarterdeck, saluted the flag, saluted the seaman on watch. I announced who I was and why I was there. All of the blood drained out of the seaman's face. He barely managed to direct me to the door on my left containing the Admin Office.
Entering the office I spoke to the Chief who happened to be at the desk. We had a repeat of the facial blood draining. He had the presence of mind to ask me if it was for the Reserve Center or one of the resident drilling units. I replied I was here for the intelligence unit. Looking infinitely relieved, he directed me to the fourth deck (floor).
The entire fourth deck was given over to one unit. We repeated the introduction and facial blood draining, this time with a 2nd class and a Senior Chief CT (Crypto Tech). The Senior Chief asked me to wait just a moment while he got the XO (Executive Officer).
From the XO I learned that there were two Intelligence units at the center and the one I wanted was on the THIRD deck. I walked down one deck. We repeated the introduction without the prior blood draining. There the XO and Ops Officer were waiting for me and actually happy to see me. They had their stuff in one tight little sock so the inspection went very quickly. After lunch I did the obligatory annual brief. They asked me to comment on some of the ongoing Intelligence Community issues of the day as they related to the Reserve Unit's mission. I was happy to do so.
One other annual briefing I did was for an Intel RU at Floyd Bennett Field, Brooklyn. I had been told in advance that the unit was informally known as Precinct 08 because every single member of the RU was either NYPD, FDNY, or NY State Police. There were two NIS (now NCIS) agents tossed in for good measure. When I started the brief, I asked how many were carrying (armed)? About half the hands went up. I told them that unless they were sworn Federal LEOs they were required to leave their weapons in their vehicles when drilling. I stopped the brief long enough for them to secure their weapons.

Actually it is true. She’s been involved in government one way or another for literally the last 40 years. Guess it depends on your definition of “most”.
That will NOT relieve him of having to fully and accurately answering questions from the FBI and others about who gave him the thumb drive and why.

And after I said that she doesn’t do press conferences, she actually did this week. D’oh! I’m sure it was under great duress and she obviously had a bad time.
Being the wife of a politician does not count as "being involved in government".
LOL! I’ve seen the blood draining thing a time or two.
As an aside, my dad was an O-6 USN Supply Corps and when he was the Chief of Atomic Weapons Material in New Mexico ‘63-’67, he rec’d the first ever permanent Sir Gaard award for security and never losing a code while he was in command from the AEC. I still have the award and a cert from the AEC for “Illigitimus Non Carborundus”. :>}
