People are again predicting his demise. The widely admired Megyn Kelly is definitely a riskier target for him than John McCain was. But since an enormous amount of his appeal is based on saying outrageous things and not apologizing for them, itd be foolish to think that anything that has transpired since Thursday will sink him.
I wouldnt be surprised, though, if the debate and its aftermath check or reverse the progress hed been making in the internals of the polls (higher favorable ratings, fewer Republicans saying theyd never consider voting for him, etc.).
I basically only have one barometer for whether Trump has gone too farand thats when Ted Cruz is willing to criticize him directly. We havent reached that point yet.
I take Andys point about how all the other candidates are making their own calculations how to respond to Trump, too, but the gentle treatment Cruz affords the mogul is especially noteworthy given how eager he usually is to attack other Republicans and the fact that Trump has the most flagrantly RINO record of anyone in the field. So I dont doubt that he shamelessly changed the subject as Alexis said, because this is something he really, really doesnt want to have to address for now. (And as a general matter, I appreciate Alexiss robust coverage of the flap that consumed the political world this weekend).
More broadly, its pretty clear where the drift of this thing is heading, which is not toward Trump winning the nomination, but toward Trump somewhere along the way saying hes been treated unfairly by the GOP, by the media, by Jonah Goldberg, et al. and declaring next year that hes seriously considering an independent bid. Even if he didnt ultimately pull the trigger, it would guarantee another couple of months of attention for Donald Trump, which is the only thing that matters for Donald Trump.

But he’s good at it!

Reagan was almost 70 years old in 1979. Reagan had served as the chief executive of California twice. Ted Cruz is 45 and as served in the Senate for a little over 2 years. Their resumes are vastly different.
Trump makes me uncomfortable, for sure—and some of his positions are downright progressive. Yet it’s hard not to like the ongoing thumb in the eye of the GOPe. I don’t vote until this is likely decided, but I expect Cruz will probably be my guy, as Trump will likely just have been too much by then.
Thank you. Good, informative post.
Yep! It was hard not to like Schwarzenegger, too. He was sincere, he was genuine, and a patriot, in his intention. He just lacked a political compass and I substituted my own because it came so easily, the same as it does to Trump -- a lot of people just project their own assumptions on Trump the same way. I voted for Schwarzenegger with naïve enthusiasm, in retrospect! I mean, I was voting "against" uber-la-raza racist leftist Bustamonte, to boot!
"A good pilot is compelled to evaluate what's happened, so he can apply what he's learned." I learned from Schwarzenegger and have been applying it ever since. Be careful what you vote for, because voting "against" is pretend.
The same probably for Ventura and Perot, I suppose.
Freeptrumpers respond: LOWRYS A RINO!!!! Go figure....
Time will tell.
Stalking Horse
a political candidate who runs only in order to provoke the election and thus allow a stronger candidate to come forward,
So, I am just repeating what I heard back in 1979. If you fail to see the relevance in that, then that's your problem.
Ted is clever enough to know that he only needs to wait for Trump to self-destruct.
* * *
Exactly! Ding ding ding! On the nose! Cruz is pretty sure that Trump will self-destruct at some point.
When that point occurs, the Donald may well bow out of the race and commend his followers to the only guy who didn’t take pot shots at him . . . Ted Cruz. (Or Trump may be the total ass I think he is and go third party. Hope not, though. And I think Cruz being decent to him is more likely to persuade Trump to more or less hand over his followers to Cruz.)
“Obviously, Trump is self destructing, but I think hes dragging Cruz down with him.”
Trump’s number went up a percent after the faux debate.
Cruz hit double digits and Bush’s number went down.
I would say, just going by the numbers, Bush is the one who is taking a nose dive.
If Bush’s number go any lower he should take his rightful place at the kiddy’s table:)
Jesus Christ said that offenses will come.
Please, need to blow with the wind, like the palm trees in a hurricane.
The bible tells us that God holds the reins of Kings, where with he tears down one, and establishes another.
The Holy Spirit told the prophet Samuel that God does not look on the outward appearance of a man, but God looks at the heart.
King David was just a shepherd boy when he confronted Goliath, but yet ? He was groomed as God’s man for the job.
He was not promoted to King until God’s timing.
Ted Cruz may not have the level of experience as Ronald Reagan, however we do not know what areas that God has groomed Ted Cruz for.
Ted Cruz is the ONLY choice of, and for conservatives, there are no alternatives available.
