How Fox anchor Bret Baier got an instant headline out of Donald Trump
LA Times ^ | August 9, 2015 | Stephen Battaglio

Reporting from Cleveland -- With the Republican presidential debate less than 10 hours away, Fox News anchors Chris Wallace, Megyn Kelly and Bret Baier sat at a long table with their producers and once again went over the game plan for the big night.

They reviewed not just the questions they would ask, but the structure of every query, keeping in mind the constraints of time and the need to avoid repeating topics. As they sorted and re-sorted questions, the unpredictability of real estate tycoon and reality TV star Donald Trump was never far from their minds.

Baier even had a "nuclear option" at the ready for Trump if he ignored all protocol.

The script — which he didn't have to use — took a page from Trump's "Celebrity Apprentice" TV show. It went like this: "Mr. Trump in your business you have rules. You follow rules. We have rules on this stage. We don't want to have to escort you to the elevator outside this boardroom."

"We're hoping we don't have to use it," Baier said later. "We're locked and loaded."

Shows they went in for war, not to vent candidates.

You have to wonder if Donald Trump should even participate in future debates, when they are so obviously out to destroy him with this nonsense.

On the other hand, him being in future debates will allow others like Ted Cruz, Ben Carson and Carly Fiorina to move up in the polls, putting further distance between themselves and ¿Jeb Bush.

Wouldn't it be ironic if the establishment GOP, in their zeal to destroy Trump, also destroys in the process their anointed one and allows a true conservative like Ted Cruz to get the nomination?

the writer ( and almost all here) doesn’t understand what happened..... Brett allowed Trump to begin real negotiations for the deal

that process is now being worked out

To have preplanned jokes from the moderators is just not serious for a Presidential debate. Don’t become part of the story! What a disaster for FoxNews.

They think they are employees of The Ministry Of Propaganda and their job is to manipulate the public.

Yep. And I'll bet they were all very, very disappointed they weren't able to use it.

As a side note, I wonder if they had a "nuclear option" in place in case Jeb started babbling incoherently in Spanish.

Carly has joined the Trump attack, she is part of the Establishment despite her claims to the contrary.

Remember Michelle Bachman playing up to Mitt? We all knew she wanted to be his VP pick. I believe Carly would love to be Bush’s running mate. She is doing her best to do the establishments bidding, IMHO.

Right now the Hopes are telling her she’s one of them and that she is great and has a bright future. They’re using her until they need to throw her away like used toilet paper.

Fox news has totally destroyed its brand.

They really have. For the 10 minutes before the "debate" (it was really a Question and Answer Session), the three of them sounded like those dipsh*ts on 'Fox and Friends' in the morning, laughing and giggling before the event. It was pathetic.

Conversely, how Donald Trump defined the next week’s media focus and attention in the first 30 seconds of the debate.
