On 4/23/2007, Jim Robinson posted a manifesto, "Giuliani as the GOP presidential nominee would be a dagger in the heart of the conservative movement" (and a knife in the back) . The thread was subtitled, "The only difference in a Liberal Rudy Giuliani and Liberal Hillary Clinton is the fact of which bathrooms they select to use and there are some who are willing to even question that.
I've seen enough of his past pronouncements and positions to be wary of what he would bring if he won, the man has NOT been a consistent conservative. Quite the contrary, he's been all over the map.
He's been truly great, genunely remarkable in this campaign, it's been awesome watching what he has brought up, the kind of firestorms he has withstood, and how he has genuinely moved the ball forward for the conservative cause. While not going into the "Trump for president" camp, it's been an absolute delight to watch what he has done in such a short time.
For that I'm greatful, politics has been a drudge and flat out depressing since the bamster has put our country into the toilet. His destruction hits new heights almost weekly, so watching Trump win a few on issues we care about is wonderful.
We do need to keep our heads about us on both sides of the issue, those who adore Trump and those who hate him are short sighted IMHO. The man is supremely talented in many ways, but is NOT reflexively conservative (frankly he has flip flopped MORE than Romney *Note to self, is that possible?* ......not good). I love what he's doing right now, love what he has been saying, but am going to watch as this unfolds.
I am neither on his bandwagon, nor a Trump hater. I just want to watch as this unfolds in the next half a year or so, and try to figure out if the man is worthy of support. I trust Cruz, not ready to supplant his candidacy with Trump. Trump has turned the race upside down in a good way for conservatives so far, but he has earned the right to be vetted and watched closely with his not so conservative past history.
I’m a little leery of Trump myself, but have enjoyed the heck out of his presence in the race such as it is, thus far.
I agree completely. He’s made it fun for a change.
Some have left that I miss, hoping they didn’t join the snark and bark anti-freepers..... Hopefully they just lurk and listen but stayed. Yet quiet a few that have left have returned under different monikers. Trolling happily along, disrupting, name calling and stirring the pot, kicking the cowpies as opportunity presents itself.....sappers in the wire per se.....
This is still best source for conservative news in my opinion.... Stay safe !
Very nicely put.
Well, I’ve greatly enjoyed reading what Trump has been saying, and watching the libs get their panties in a wad. He is absolutely great at that kind of thing.
That’s one thing. He’s a great speaker. But what would he DO in a position of power? I’m afraid I agree with Ken5050 on that. He is a Democrat, he has donated almost entirely to Democrats except where he wanted to make an impression on conservative listeners, and he has a poor record of supporting some of the worst politicians.
This business recalls his taking up of the birther movement. It was all “Where’s the birth certificate for a couple of weeks. But he avoided making any specific points that might have embarrassed Obama. And then, just as his rants reached their highest heat, bang, Obama sent the Seals in after bin Laden. The news was filled with Obama’s great accomplishment. And what about Trump? Well, he disappeared. And then Obama produced his Long-form electronic COLB. And Trump said nothing further about the fact that the new COLB was as fake as the old one.
It might just have been a coincidence. But I find it curious that Trump’s rants, The bin Laden attack, and the showing of the new forged COLB all occurred within a few days.
In point of fact, Trump killed the birther movement. We still don’t know for sure where Obama was born, but we do know that those documents are blatant forgeries. But Trump fixed it so no one is allowed to raise the issue again without being mocked as a deluded birther. One of Obama’s chief difficulties was solved—mostly by Trump.
Would I trust Trump to do what he promises? Hell, no. He never has been trustworthy. I think he’s just in this as a spoiler.
Which is not to say that, as I started out with, he doesn’t talk a great game that is great fun to listen to. But he can’t be trusted.
Indeed
Goldi lox
I went there when I was banned but I was disciplined about not burning bridges
And argued with them about JRs right to make a good living from something he founded
A concept that escaped them
And all anti freepers
Before getting deeper in the thread...that is the bottom line!
Tied, at least in my book, for "bottom line".
Of what relevance is that at this point in time exactly?
Because the biggest hurdle to conservative change is overcoming the gop leadership.
Needs repeating over and over.
It is this small group of leaders who are problem, priority number one is removing them and replacing them with conservatives that won’t be bought. Principled conservatism would destroy the Democrats on election days.
Poppycock! Trump has spoken against it already.
I would never compare Trump to Reagan.
Good Lord. You are delusional.
We would sure have a safer country. We would also have had Obamacare overturned, with a prez that wouldn’t veto. Our military would be stronger. Iraq would be stable. Economy would be stronger. Deficit would be smaller.
And the that’s just a start. A pretty good start, even if it doesn’t make all your gov dreams come true. Most constitutional minded Americans would agree an RG presidency would have been preferable to this Obama term
Good for you for saying those comments.
But we all pray that he exercises that power wisely. So far, so good. However, we always must remember our values and we must also have a care for proper procedure. We must understand what we are, we are a political forum for the exchange of ideas. A heavy-handed censorship is inimical to that concept. We must have an exchange of ideas, even unpopular and somewhat offbeat ideas if we are to have a forum.
We must ask ourselves, what are we afraid of? Cannot our conservatism stand the test? Are we afraid of our values? Will we not learn and refine our understandings as we defend them? If we cannot defend them are they worthy?
I have written on my about page:
... A man with unflinching fortitude to behold, accept, and deal with reality no matter how unpleasant the prospect. There was not an ounce of self-deception in the man. This character trait alone should make every poster on FreeRepublic long to share the avatar and name of Nathan Bedford Forrest especially those Posters who evade unpalatable reality by resort to name-calling, ad hominem attacks, zotting, and just plain old-fashioned hardheadedness.
Remember Franklin's maxim: Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.
and will have neither.
What Guiliani did for New York City worked for New York City, but for those of us not from that City, and especially those of us in 'flyover country', New York City is far from the epitomy of Liberty we casually enjoy at home, and thus, constraints on Liberty casually accepted there would be greeted here with rebellion.
New Yorkers don't seem to get that.
For me, there is no safety nor security in a government which would deem illegal the possession of arms I have owned for decades with no ill effect.
For those of us in rural settings, the impositions of ever expanding government upon liberties enjoyed to their fullest mere decades ago is reaching intolerable levels, and many do not even see that.
Consider, in my youth I could pilot a small craft, fish, carry a firearm--all without licenses, and before the age of 10. In those days my father filled out the order form, enclosed a check, and the mailman brought the package with a gun in it. I operated farm equipment--tractors by 7, bar mowers cutting hay by 10, bailers, by 12. I worked, doing heavy construction, at the age of 14--not picking up scrap lumber, but running chainsaws, operating air hammers for driving seawall sheeting, and as a deckhand on a pile driver. I held a commercial fishing license at 14. I was also a Volunteer Fireman, and at 16 was running Ambulance calls as well, an EMT before my 18th birthday.
None of that would be permitted now, and certainly not even then in a large city, the people of which would impose (and have imposed) urban paradigms on an area it can't comprehend, for the 'good' of those 'uneducated hicks' who live there.
There are a lot of things which would have been preferable to these Obama terms, including the un-anesthetized pulling of wisdom teeth (less painful and would heal quicker), but advancing anything which causes another net loss of Liberty is not the answer.
If I thought it would have made a greater difference, I'd say so, but the utter absence of significant and effective opposition to Obama's agendae by the vast majority of the Republican Party, and especially the leaders thereof, only tells me they are complicit, giving mock resistance to acts and edicts for which they are only glad the other Party will be blamed, while advancing what appears to be a joint agenda.
I cannot say with any certainty that Obamacare would have been overturned, when the Congress continues to fund the agencies critical to its implementation despite having the ability to stonewall the process. Nor has Congress jealously guarded its sole Constitutional authority to make law, instead abdicating in favor of millions of Federal executive branch appointed minions who promulgate regulations which have the effect of law, with all the destruction to our Liberty and economy that ensues. Congress will not even show the fortitude to pull the funding to those agencies and impede their progress, nor pass legislation constraining their processes.
From here, beyond the faint horizons of the urban dweller, the advance of tyranny is like a prairie fire, while to the city folks that glow in the distant night sky, if seen at all, dims among the lights.
There is only one issue this election and that issue is (illegal) immigration. 30+ million new Rats voters will doom conservatism to the ash bin of history. We can afford to lose and fight another day on every issue but immigration. If we lose on that issue this cycle we are finished as nation.
