"He's not a war hero," Trump said. Sarcastically, Trump quipped, "He's a war hero because he was captured." Then, he added, "I like people that weren't captured."
Trump's comments came during his appearance at the Family Leadership Summit, a day-long gathering of about 3,000 social conservative activists that is drawing nine other Republican presidential candidates.

Trump has been trying to explain all day that he meant people who weren't captured were as much a war hero. And he's right, every one who risked capture was as much a hero as those who actually got captured. Being captured doesn't put him above all those who served.
Anyway, moot point. The politically correct buzzards are circling and, unfortunately, many Republicans are drawing them a map.
The bottom line is that McLame would never have been ‘captured’ if his wings had been taken away after losing the very first of five aircraft he lost.
Didn’t the Dims say the same thing in 2008 when McQueeg was running against Obungo?
That said, Trump gained nothing by "going there".
Here is the full context of Trumps remarks:

That’s not what he meant, or at least he’s saying that’s not what he meant. He says that he likes people who weren’t captured as much as those who were, that he likes all who served whether captured or not.
I think it’s funny, watching all the liberals run to defend McCain.
McCain was a hero for being a victim. Right?
Hmmm, don’t know how he can recover from this.
One thing I refuse to do is stick up for McCain. Why?
Because he has never stuck up for me. Instead, he calls people like me foul names. He never calls the real nutjobs on the left foul names.
Screw him.
“While not an achievement, getting shot down and becoming a POW is not a subject for mockery, no matter what his politics. “
He wasn’t mocking. He was being badgered on and on everytime he said something about McCain with ‘but he is a war hero’.
He was saying that McCain shouldn’t be allowed to call his supporters ‘crazies’ and get away with it because he was a ‘war hero’.
He can recover if conservatives realize that Trump's opinion of McCain is a nonstarter. Everything that is wrong with this country sprang from this kind of manipulation by the left. We can all accept that he wasn't denouncing POWs with his statement that he was saying all who served, including those who didn't get captured, deserve our respect.
And I believe him because he loves the military and veterans are his #1 priority.
I agree you on each of these points.
I have several friends who served with McCain in Prison Camp. They have been very closed lips even when well lubricated with very good whiskey. They won’t talk about McCain’s conduct as well as all the rest. They believe that what happened inside was their business and they decided to handle it themselves. I have suspected, but the people who know aren’t talking, as far as I know.
Here is a wonderful video about “song bird” MCCain setting out what a “hero” he really was. Once again, Trump is truthful and correct. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMcYqtayU7c
I hope he stays in it we still need him but he is not going to win any points.
Although I don’t know anyone that spent time there, I have read some reports. Some of them read like a person who hates the guy and they can’t be rational about it. I’m not going to use them for a reference. Not even sure I can find those reports any longer.
A lot of McCain related things disappear from the Internet.
I appreciate the mention.
“He’s not a war hero,”
I disagree, he is as big of a war hero as John Kerry. And
just as good a liberal senator for a RINO.
The real problem for the American Military--a President who after months of increasingly virulent targeting of our men at arms, still has many serving as targets in "gun free zones." This refusal to immediately recognize the obvious danger is so beyond something that could be justified by mere stupidity; that it should arouse the anger of every loyal American. The success of one fanatic gun man in killing Marines and Naval personnel, the other day, puts this sickening policy into a correct perspective.
As for McCain? Part of me wants to merely chalk up his alliance with those who seek to undermine the traditional culture of the Founding Fathers, to hardened arteries; one wants to say that he suffered in Viet Nam, and probably drinks too much to handle recurring nightmares. But would either problem really excuse his position on immigration, or the whipped cur approach to his debates with the Obamanist in 2008?
So Trump answers McCain insults with the sort of nastiness that one adopts in responding to a Playground bully? Is that response even 1/1000 as serious as Obama's continuing to make our young military personnel serve unprotected in "gun free zones." Will any former POW hold Trump's insult back to McCain as 1/1000th as serious a problem as leaving Marines as targets?
Query? Have those "Republicans," rushing to condemn Trump for making fun of John McCain, even bothered to address the real problem in America today, with respect to those in harm's way?
McCain has been an awful senator, awful and worse.
But his comportment in captivity does, indeed, make him a military hero.
Mister Trump (born in 1946) has never worn the uniform, and has no standing (none!) to criticize a Naval Aviator (who flew an A4 Skyraider on dangerous low-level attack missions over vietnam, including risky aircraft operations on an aircraft carrier) who gets shot down, seriously wounded, and then brutally captured.
This Vietnam war veteran (full disclosure, never boots down in country) and Navy Dad calls for a thorough investigation on just how Mister Trump evaded the draft back during the Vietnam War.
