ISIL is obliterating the Middle East's cultural landmarks. But should we arm ourselves in order to save threatened sites, asks Dan Cruickshank.
When Egypt comes under the auspices of the Khalifa [Caliphate], there will be no more Pyramids, no more Sphinx, no more idolatry. This, I was told by British Muslim political activist Anjem Choudary, will be just.
This chilling recent interview with Choudary in east London was part of a journey that started in early 2002. I went to Afghanistan in March of that year, just after the fall of the Taliban, to report for a television programme on the events leading to the destruction of the pair of giant, 1,500 year-old statues of the Buddha in Bamiyan. A few months later I went to Iraq just before and just after the fall of Saddam Hussein to make programmes about ancient art, archaeological sites and museums threatened, and in some cases ultimately damaged or destroyed, by conflict.
These travels took me to the heart of this ancient land to the Assyrian cities of Nimrud and Nineveh, to Babylon, to the 2,000 year-old ruins of the great Arab city of Hatra, and to internationally important museums of Mosul and Baghdad....

Thanks goodness I saw them in 2010. They are so neat it will be a shame to see them go, but maybe that will finally be the wakeup call needed. Never know.
Pack them full of explosives.
Turn them into a pile of rocks not a pyramid.
Yep, kill them all.
Check out the fourth pyramid on the plateau. That is how you destroy a pyramid.
Neutron bombs. Kills the vermin. Leaves the stuff.
A: Um, kill them.
Our liberal elites are destroying the history of the South, the flag of that region, and any Confederate statues. ISIS and our liberal elites would both burn books if they could... they have much in common.
Maybe it wasn’t so bad that Europe took all the cultural art objects from the Middle East to Museum in Europe. Maybe they can be saved from the fanatics hammers. Egypt will never fall. The moslem Brother hood is a minority in the Land of the Nile. They blew it when they tried to rule and were kicked out.
After ISIS has blown up St. Peter’s and the Sistine Chapel, and while they are sawing off his head, the Pope will be apologizing for the Crusades.
“the Arabs need to take care of their own problems. “
The Egyptians WILL take care of the ISIS problem IMO, and quite sternly. Egypt does not have oil, but they do have ancient artifacts which bring in BIG money from tourists, and they will not allow their economic lifeblood to be destroyed.
Just planting explosives will turn them into unrecognizable shapes.
The big Buddhist statues carved into hillsides were blown apart so the faces were gone.
It is cultural Marxism. Sometimes it disguises itself as Democratic, other times Christian as in the WCC and NCC, and other times as Islamic.
It is purely Satanic.
“These travels took me to the heart of this ancient land – to the Assyrian cities of Nimrud and Nineveh, to Babylon, to the 2,000 year-old ruins of the great”
I think he’s full of it.
I was at Camp Alpha, Babylon at the time he claims to have visited and the base was not open to ‘journalists’ sight seers, etc.
