Authorities Seize 3D Printed Assault Rifle From Two Oregon Felons

Today, we learn that two felons in Oregon were arrested and charged with illegally possessing firearms, one of which deputies believe was 3D printed. Nolan DeBell, 42, and Joshua Holloway, 27, were arrested three weeks ago on June 9 when deputies found a large number of illegally-modified and stolen firearms at their house in Chiloquin, Oregon.

One of the weapons that was seized was an AR-15 assault rifle, which included a lower receiver that investigators now believe had been 3D printed. The lower receiver is of course a part of the gun that contains the firing mechanism, and is basically what makes the gun “work”.

They had other stolen firearms yet the 3d printed one is the one they are worried about.

3D printed weapons are as deadly as those old all plastic guns. /s

Of COURSE they’re worried about that one more,
because they intend to ban and confiscate the normally manufactured ones.

But, if anyone can “print” an “assault rifle” in their basement,
they will NOT be able to control it.

And, looking forward to that point - if the rifle is going to be illegal anyway, why not print a full select-fire model?

I'm not sure what this "firing mechanism" is he speaks of unless he's referring to the trigger. Since most of a lower is polymer anyway this would be the easiest, most reliable part to create with a 3D Printer. The bolt, bolt carrier group, action and charging handle are all in the upper, all part of the "firing mechanism" and all take the most stress in firing along with the barrel itself.

Chiloquin area is where much of our local crime originates. It is primarily native american population.

2010 census

As of the census of 2010, there were 734 people, 281 households, and 179 families residing in the city. The population density was 895.1 inhabitants per square mile (345.6/km2). There were 356 housing units at an average density of 434.1 per square mile (167.6/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 49.2% Native American, 40.7% White, 0.1% African American, 0.4% Asian, 0.5% from other races, and 9.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.5% of the population.

Vector mechanics belie that claim when it is shoulder fired. If you want the straight inline recoil, look at the AR-15.

In this case, to fire FA the bolt carrier is different and the fire control group is different.

I’m no expert on the details of it.

But in concept, if the rifle is illegal whether it’s a semi or a select fire, why not?

The part that "makes the gun work" is often referred to as "AMMO", without ammo the empty gun is known as "A CLUB".

Interesting. Two months ago the renters next door to me were busted by the Chino (CA) Cops for ID theft, drugs AND found a a high end 3D printer with a completed AR 15 lower. You just never know where the Oregon busted lower assy might have come from.

Relevant:

Case “U.S. vs Stewart” almost made it to the Supreme Court, arguing legality of a felon to make his own machine gun from scratch, but was dismissed based on “U.S. vs Raich” which held the feds could ban activity which reduced demand in illegal interstate commerce.

True. When it becomes illegal to own an “assault weapon”, why not have a machine gun?

The Stewart case did make it to SCOTUS. SCOTUS ordered the 9th Circuit to "apply Raich", which was, in effect, the same as ordering a reversal.

The 9th circuit had held that possession of a home made weapon that never left the state was outside of federal reach.

Interesting photo. What alloy is used? I am somewhat familiar with the 3-D printers that use polymers, but I am no all that familiar with metal printers.

That was the first “printed” assault weapon I found online. Heartily agree with your AR assessment.

You have not been deep enough into the back-woods until you’ve been to Chiloquin.

I drove into “town” one day, parked and meandered over to the bridge to look down at the trout.

A 14 year old 5’ 6” 120 pound long-haired “brave” separated from his buds and with clenched fists started marching over to confront me (50 y.o., 5’ 11”, 180 pounds, white guy in full fighting fettle).

I didn’t need a street fight on my record, no matter that he started it and I ended it. So, I skeedaddled back to the truck, and peeled out of there.

That’s Chiloquin.
