A search of Roof's car turned up six crescent-shaped, 40-round magazines in the trunk.
"That's scary," former U.S. Attorney and State Law Enforcement Division Director Reggie Lloyd told The State newspaper, which first reported the development.
"We ought to be thankful he never got his hands on an AR-15."

No dinero no rifle, but Roof had a very scary “forearm” stock in his car trunk. Cnn: eeeek!
Actually I want an AR-10 and an AR-12.
Reloading to kill 9 people - okay. Not reloading to kill 9 people - bad.
How would he have gotten it into the church? Stick it down his pants and walk stiff legged?
Is there an additional victim somewhere?
Whose forearm did he amputate and put in the trunk of his car?
Why would Roof need an AR?
The Left tells us that those evil, high-capacity “clips” are dangerous in & of themselves. All he had to do was spray the crowd with one of those magazines.
“Pow-pow-pow-powity-powpow.”
Is that an AR-15 in your pants or are you just really happy to be here?

I posted a this comment on another site as to why the victims just stood around pleading for their lives when, after some point, the survivors could have recovered, swarmed him and taken him down, if not out. Instead, they stood around like sheep. (Yeah, I wasn't there - and I allowed for the shock and surprise at the first shots.)
Someone took offense that I should even bring up that angle, painting those killed as martyrs rather than victims, and mentioned the shock factor.
I replied that I would be brutal, seemingly uncaring, probably get blown off the air (I did) and asked the following question (Allowing for a 10-round magazine and the slide automatically going into battery after reload).
Please read this out loud so you get close to the actual timing:
BANG! aim BANG! (surprise, freeze in fear) aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! (snick - eject clip, snick insert loaded clip )
BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! (snick - eject clip, snick insert loaded clip )
BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! (snick - eject clip, snick insert loaded clip )
BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! (snick - eject clip, snick insert loaded clip )
BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! (snick - eject clip, snick insert loaded clip )
Now, no matter how terrified you were, at what point in the above scenario would you have thought "Oh my God! I'm going to die!" and taken action, either to flee or attack the shooter while he was distracted during those "snicks"?
Your scenario is perfectly logical.
I have never been under fire so don’t know how I would really react in that situation. I do hope I would/could take advantage at the reloading point. I’d be scared to death...but I think I’d be pissed off enough to try to do something.
Same here - as with most others who have never been under fire. At some point, survival instinct would kick in.
Right! Because you can kill people WAY DEADER with an AR than with a pistol.
Buy em cheap and stack em deep.
Molon labe.
Yeah and it coulda walked away and killed someone all on its own!
