I posted a this comment on another site as to why the victims just stood around pleading for their lives when, after some point, the survivors could have recovered, swarmed him and taken him down, if not out. Instead, they stood around like sheep. (Yeah, I wasn't there - and I allowed for the shock and surprise at the first shots.)
Someone took offense that I should even bring up that angle, painting those killed as martyrs rather than victims, and mentioned the shock factor.
I replied that I would be brutal, seemingly uncaring, probably get blown off the air (I did) and asked the following question (Allowing for a 10-round magazine and the slide automatically going into battery after reload).
Please read this out loud so you get close to the actual timing:
BANG! aim BANG! (surprise, freeze in fear) aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! (snick - eject clip, snick insert loaded clip )
BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! (snick - eject clip, snick insert loaded clip )
BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! (snick - eject clip, snick insert loaded clip )
BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! (snick - eject clip, snick insert loaded clip )
BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! aim BANG! (snick - eject clip, snick insert loaded clip )
Now, no matter how terrified you were, at what point in the above scenario would you have thought "Oh my God! I'm going to die!" and taken action, either to flee or attack the shooter while he was distracted during those "snicks"?
Your scenario is perfectly logical.
I have never been under fire so don’t know how I would really react in that situation. I do hope I would/could take advantage at the reloading point. I’d be scared to death...but I think I’d be pissed off enough to try to do something.
