A 22-year veteran of the NOPD was shot and killed after a suspect he was transporting was able to get out of his handcuffs and get a hold of a gun.
The incident occurred around 9 a.m. near the intersection of Elysian Fields and North Claiborne. After the shooting, the car crashed. Officer Daryle Holloway, 46, was rushed to the hospital where he died.
A manhunt is on for the suspect, 33-year-old Travis Bois, who is now wanted for murder.
”That prisoner was able to get his hands out of the handcuffs and was able to get a firearm and shot officer Darryl Holloway while he was driving,” said NOPD Chief Michael Harrison.
Harrison said Holloway leaves behind a family and that telling them of his death was “the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do.”
Harrison said Bois was able to get out of the handcuffs and make his way from the back seat, through an opening in a steel cage that separates the front and back seats. That is when he shot Holloway.
Harrison said Holloway continued to try to gain control of the situation, before the vehicle crashed.

It would have to be the officers, right? If this guy was handcuffed and in a patrol car, I would have to assume it is protocol to search for weapons prior to placing him in the vehicle. How he got out of handcuffs is beyond me though....

Not necessarily. There have been instances where a person was able to conceal a gun through being taken into custody and transported. Getting out of cuffs, or out of hands behind the back can be done by "flexible" folks.
He should be shot just for general principles.
That I didn’t know (of course I wouldn’t since I’m about as flexible as a brick). :)

Arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault. Turned that into murder.
