NEW LONDON, Conn. (Reuters) - Rising seas and thawing permafrost caused by warmer global temperatures threaten U.S. military bases and will change the way the U.S. armed services defend the country, President Barack Obama said on Wednesday.
In a commencement address at the United States Coast Guard Academy, Obama underscored the risks to national security posed by climate change, one of his top priorities for action in his remaining 19 months in office.
"The threat of a changing climate cuts to the very core of your service," Obama told the 224 graduating cadets, who studied the impacts of global warming as part of their curriculum.
"It will affect everything that you do in your careers," Obama added, noting that sea levels were expected to rise by 1 to 4 feet (30-120 cm) in the coming century.
The Pentagon is assessing the vulnerability to climate change of its 7,000 bases, installations and facilities, many of which are on the coast, the White House said.
Obama highlighted damage to the navy and air bases at Norfolk, Virginia, from increasing floods.

Do you also not understand that technology is constantly advancing and 100 years is a very, very long time to come up with solutions? AND, even if those particular bases are forced to shut down, how does that threaten the nation itself? Are we going to be invaded by rising seas????
No. You want to know real threats to national defense? How about porous borders, an economy burdened by unrelenting bureaucracy and taxation, military cutbacks to fund payouts to special interests, focusing on social engineering rather than military power, bowing to Muslim terrorists, etc.

On Mark Levin yesterday a woman caller read from a statement by a global warming advocate that their goal, although difficult, is to use the threat of global warming to destroy capitalism.

Officials scrap plans for target practice with machine guns mounted on boats. Critics cited risks to sailors and lead pollution from bullets.
Environmental groups, meanwhile, noted that firing as many as 430,000 lead bullets a year on the lakes would add more pollution to an already fragile ecosystem. The Coast Guard would have become one of the largest sources of toxic lead dumped into the lakes, which supply drinking water to millions of people in the U.S. and Canada.
