They changed the time signature but left the melody alone. I remember that one all too well.

Billy Joel’s “quote” was a lot more than 6 notes.
Here are some lyrics I wrote for the Chorale from St. Matthews Passion:
When Bach composed this music
I’m sure he had no idea
That 200 years later,
The tune would reappear
On the Rhymin’ Simon Album.
I guess it was supposed
That Johann couldn’t sue paul
Because he’s decomposed.

Even great composers eventually decompose.

as long as they didn’t decompensate.
Although, a LOT of them had “issues”.

Still in a sling and hurting. The hurt on a scale of 0 - 10 is about 5. YESTERDAY IT WAS 6.

Please correct me if I'm wrong - you're referring to Simon's "American Tune" ripoff of what most of us know as "O Sacred Head."

Exactly!
“Oh Sacred Head” is from the Chorale from Bach’s St. Matthew’s Passion and appears several times in this very long (but beautiful!) piece.

The original by Haydn, a set of variations on his tune God Save Francis the Emperor, which was his answer to Le Marsellaise.
Haydn: Quartet in C, Op. 76/3, second movement
It was such a great tune that the Lutherans turned it into a hymn. Then Bismarck got his hands on it. Hitler didnt change the words, just the context of the word über.

Reminds me, I had a layover on Sundy in Denver and went to my favorite USO, in Terminal A. Those folks are just amgreat group of hosts. I retire in December after 30 years, and I’l miss the oases in a traveling desert.

Indeed! I know it not only from St. Matthew's Passion, but as the hymn we sing every Holy Thursday. Ironically, the first time I can recall hearing the theme was Paul Simon's redaction in 1966. I thought it was an American folk tune and I have to say, I always liked his lightly sprung rhythm on that seminal theme.

Paul did a nice job, but attribution would have been nice!
Even the “Toys” gave credit to Bach.

Andy changed the time signature but kept the harmonic underlay. Clever. You have to listen carefully to catch what he did.
