Stop chugging sugary soda and munching sweet treats.
Cut back on red meats, butter and other sources of saturated fat.
Lay off the salt shaker.
Eat plenty of fruits and veggies.
And don't worry about having an egg and an extra cup of coffee with your breakfast.
These are the conclusions of the advisory panel that helps shape America's official dietary guidelines, and they appear to be about the same as they were back in 2010, the last time the guidelines were updated, dietitians say.
"What's good about the report is that much of it is reinforcing what we saw in 2010," said Connie Diekman, director of university nutrition at Washington University in St. Louis.
The Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee's report this year concludes that Americans are still eating far too much sugar, salt and saturated fat, increasing their risk of chronic and deadly illnesses.
Americans also aren't getting adequate levels of important nutrients such as vitamin D, calcium, potassium, fiber and iron, the committee found.
This consistent message could help Americans who want to eat right but are confused by constantly changing recommendations, Diekman said.
"What the committee has recommended is what the current science supports, which is our intake of added sugars and saturated fats is still too high. If we expect to reduce our risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes and obesity, we need to make a shift to more plant foods," she said. "Maybe if we go a second time around on 'this is what the science shows,' the consumer will hear the science-based message and consider change."
The worst foods for the American diet are burgers, sandwiches, tacos, pizza, desserts and sweet snacks, and sugar-sweetened beverages, the committee found.

Nanny State PING!
Fat is good, sugar is bad. I don’t need Big Gov to tell me this. Also, Big Gov doesn’t like fat, even though it is healthy for us (minus the hydrogenated kind of course).
Every time I read things like this I crave ice cream or an Italian sub.
.
Why are we subsidizing sugar?
“the worst foods for americans are pizza, hamburgers, hot dogs, tacos, sugary sweets, and, we should eat more fruits and vegetables”
i could have saved them millions of dollars in research costs cause i coulda told them that myself.
Ever since the government has started playing with our diets, obesity has been on the rise. Gee, connection? RME Just eat healthy food and skip the breads and deserts. Fruits, veggies and protein are great. Skip the processed foods. Those munchies in front of the tv will kill ya.
Agriculture subsidies are an American govt tradition. With plenty of support from both Republicans and Democrats.
That’s why we’ll never get rid of ethanol in our gasoline.
If you want to do anything to help yourself this year, do not consume sucralose (Splenda), in any way, shape or form.
An artificial sweetener, manufacturers love it because it is cheap, but continued use for about 12 weeks will have much the same effect as taking a potent antibiotic for that long.
It devastates the beneficial flora in the intestines, but does not effect enterobacter, strongly associated with weight gain, and likely other pathogens. And even after three more months with no sucralose in your diet, your intestinal flora will not be completely restored.
They, as much as anything, protect you from dangerous blooms of drug resistant bacteria.
We shouldn’t be subsidizing anything, whether I chose to eat it or not.
I remember when I thought I was healthy for using sugar subs including sucralose. Ugh. I accidentally had some in a protien shake a couple of weeks ago. Holy cow! I felt like crap afterward!
You people are Sweet Enough , LOL
Got Mary Landrieu elected twice, gone Now T G.
Vermont gets milk subsidies, IA gets GMO corn subsidies
This s#it has GOT TO STOP.
First step towards a sugar tax.
OMG - I have been using Splenda and guess what - have gained weight. Went to Dr today to discuss this. Are there any artificial sweeteners that are ok? How about Stevia?
I have to lay off red meat, pork, butter, cheese...emphasize chicken, fish, fruits and veggies and high quality bread is ok....plus 1/2 hr exercise a day.
I’d better make sure I don’t forget the probiotic.
Part of the obesity problem is that kids sit in front of TVs far too much, and adults sit in cubicles for far too long. So many of us snack and sit. The breads and desserts can be enjoyed from time to time; they just can’t be your main source of calories along with stuff that comes from a bag, box, or can.
Who the hell are you to tell me what to do?
The Declaration of Independence also makes their intent clear: “He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people and eat out their substance.”
This continues and increases beyond reason with the multitude of federal offices as the EPA, OSHA, IRS, FCC, DOC, DOA, and on and on. Why should the states and their citizens send a dollar to Washington only to receive less the half that in return while the remainder employs bureaucrats for the purpose of “to harass our people and eat out their substance.” Why? This must stop and we need a new revolution.
Oh sugar, honey honey. You are my candy girl, and you got me wanting you.
The Archies
I refuse.
Ditto!
