Report: RadioShack to close all stores, sell half to Sprint
KTRS ^ | 2/2/15 | KTRS

Radio Shack has been selling communication equipment since 1921, but according to Bloomberg, the retail chain will not be celebrating a 100th birthday. As part of a bankruptcy deal, RadioShack Corp. will be shutting down their entire chain of 7,000 tech stores, half of which will be reportedly sold to Sprint. According to the report, RadioShack locations that are sold to Sprint would operate under the wireless carrier’s name, meaning RadioShack would cease to exist as a stand-alone retailer. RadioShack received a rescue financing package from Standard General LP in October, and the hedge fund would serve as the lead bidder in a filing and provide debtor-in-possession financing after filing, said the people. That would allow the investment firm to recoup some of the costs of the $535 million loan. Liquidating the stores also would let RadioShack avoid a battle with lenders over control of the company.

It is sad to me although I have to admit that I haven’t been in a Radio Shack more than once per year or two in the past decade.

Radio Shack’s demise:

They went ‘black’,

They’re not coming back.

“I did buy some DeOxit from RS last year.”

I love that stuff and use it on every electrical connector I touch now. Especially on a weak connections. I don’t ever have to mess with them again once I use the cleaner. RS did make me mad when they stopped selling the small spray bottle combo kit with Power Booster and Pro Gold. Now I can only find it in the big expensive can.

When our big RS closed years ago I got tons of Power Booster and Pro Gold pens for next to nothing but still miss the small cans.

“Why does Radio Shack ask for your phone number when you buy batteries?”

or zip code like some other stores around here.

I used to argue or say no, but lately I just give a fake number like 111-111-1111 or fake zip like 11111 and then wait and see if they accuse me of making them up, which is great fun if they’re stupid enough to do that, because I then retort: “Are you calling me a liar?”.

The thing is you could buy things there you could not find anywhere else. Most places now just give a blank stare and tell you “your equipment is outdated, you have to buy a whole new setup.”

It’s sort of like going into the old neighborhood hardware store (those are gone too) to look for that old dusty part for your broken lawnmower.

It’s a free service to check whether your land line still works.

Great! Just great!

Just when i’m in the market for another shortwave radio.

Can you imagine talking to a narcissistic, Nirvana-dressed, selfie-taking, oversized thumbs, less than 25 year old living with mama, about shortwave radio technology????

Still have my STA-90 and all models of their 5W CB walkie-talkies. Will never part with any.

And had those same speakers too. But the speaker paper rotted, they were kinda ugly, so I donated them.

My first job out of college in 1985. Knew they wouldn’t last without me when I left in ‘86.

I’ve spent a lot of time, in RS. It’s been 15 years since they’ve sold more than a handful of electronics components.
